Signs, Chapter 3 This bulletin "column" has discussed signs of several kinds. Now for a sign easily recog-nized. Our parish has joined the Peace Pole Project. It promotes peace poles, declaring “A Peace Pole is a hand-crafted monument that displays the message and prayer

May Peace Prevail on Earth on each of its four or six sides, usually in different languages. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace. They serve as constant reminders for us to visualize and pray for world peace.” Scan here:

to see a Peace Pole at the Vatican with Pope John Paul II.

Our parish's Peace Pole is the initiative of the Just Faith / Justice Grows group. It is, or will be soon, front and center outside our church (on the steps facing Ashbrook Drive). On our version, the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" appears in Spanish, Swahili, Vietnamese and English.

Ignatian Retreat in Everyday Life

Bridge your spiritual life with your everyday life. The world is becoming more aware of, and attracted to, the spirituality of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, and its princi-ples and prayer methods provide a foundation for Jesuit spirituality and outlook. Pope Francis exudes the joy of knowing Jesus, and he views the Gospels in imaginative ways, both reflecting important components of the Spiritual Exercises. The St. Louis Bridges Foundation will sponsor Information Sessions for those wish-ing to experience the Spiritual Exercises in everyday life. If interested, pick up THE BRIDGES RETREAT brochure in the back of church or see www.bridgesfoundation.org, or contact [email protected] or phone Linda at 314-313-8283. You can also call Sister Miriam Wessel-mann,SSND at 314-325-5363, member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish for more information.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Fed by God

The readings today drive the point home to us that God provides for all our needs. One of the most widespread problems we embrace in our culture is an excessive degree of self-reliance. There is nothing wrong with preparation and hard work, but there is also nothing wrong with asking for God to provide for us in our need. We pray that God would give us our daily bread every time we go to Mass. Jesus reminds us in the Gospel passage that He will provide for us abundantly when we ask Him. He knows the exact manner in which we need nourishment, both bodily and spiritual. This principle of trusting in God’s providence is central to our labors of evangelization, which are ultimately in the hand of God. We can cer-tainly plant seeds and accompany others in the path of discipleship, but we cannot make someone convert to Catholicism or become a saint by our own personal effort. This week, consider how you are in need and ask for God’s help to sustain you. “May your unfail-ing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you” (Ps 33:22). archstl.org/dynamic

“Nuclear war will not mean the death of a hundred million people. Or even a thousand million. It will mean the extinction of four thousand million: the end of life as we know it on our planet earth.”

Rajiv Gandhi

“The consequence of {the failure of deterrence} invokes death on a scale rival-ing the power of the creator, poisoning the earth, deforming its inhabitants for generation upon generation.” General Lee Butler “It is not a question of whether, but of where and when weapons of mass de-struction will be used.” William Perry “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in a final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.” Dwight D. Eisenhower
