Solemnity of Pentecost Today we celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost. Pentecost is the day on which the Catholic Church was born.
Today memorializes the Church’s first day in its mission to continue the work of Christ.
The theologian, Fr. Congar, wrote: “The Holy Spirit is without a face and almost without a name. He is the wind
who is not seen, but who makes things move. He is known by effects such as love, peace and forgiveness."
John’s Gospel explains that Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate from the Father, to live with his
disciples: “I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.” Today we heard the fulfillment of that promise. Jesus
said to his disciples “Receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is always with the Church.
Today, I would like you to keep in mind three things regarding to the Solemnity of Pentecost. First, when the Holy
Spirit came upon the Apostles and disciples, the church was born. It was the Spirit who transformed the disciples
from faithful followers to bold preachers who would give up their lives for Jesus. The Spirit got things moving like
a strong wind, or fire that could not be stopped, and the apostles began to preach starting at Jerusalem and carrying
the message of Jesus to the Ends of the earth.
Second, the Holy Spirit continues trying to keep the Church united and faithful to its mission. This is one of the
things Jesus especially prayed for at the Last Supper that we all will be one. It is a point St Paul made in his letter
to the Corinthians: "In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body".
Third, the Holy Spirit is given to us through every sacrament. The Holy Spirit is always with us. Through his grace
we all are capable of bringing Jesus Christ into the world. Saint Paul says: “No one can say Jesus is Lord, except
by the Holy Spirit”.
The Holy Spirit is our guiding presence. Let us invite Him to come upon us today.
Solemnidad de Pentecostés Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de Pentecostés. Pentecostés es el día en que nació la Iglesia Católica. Hoy se
conmemora el primer día de la Iglesia en su misión de continuar el trabajo de Cristo.
El teólogo, Fr. Congar, escribió: "El Espíritu Santo es sin rostro y casi sin nombre. Él es el viento que no se ve,
pero que hace que las cosas se muevan. Él es conocido por efectos como el amor, la paz y el perdón”.
El Evangelio de Juan explica que Jesús prometió enviar al Espíritu Santo, el Abogado del Padre, a vivir con sus
discípulos: "No los dejaré huérfanos. Vendré a ustedes”. Hoy escuchamos el cumplimiento de esa promesa. Jesús
dijo a sus discípulos: "Reciban el Espíritu Santo". El Espíritu Santo está siempre con la Iglesia.
Hoy, me gustaría que tengamos en cuenta tres cosas con respecto a la solemnidad de Pentecostés. Primero, cuando
el Espíritu Santo vino sobre los Apóstoles y discípulos, la Iglesia nació. Fue el Espíritu el que transformó a los
discípulos de fieles seguidores en audaces predicadores que entregarían sus vidas por Jesús. El Espíritu hizo que
las cosas se movieran como un fuerte viento o un fuego que no se puede detener, y los apóstoles comenzaron a
predicar comenzando en Jerusalén y llevando el mensaje de Jesús hasta los confines de la tierra.
Segundo, el Espíritu Santo continúa tratando de mantener a la Iglesia unida y fiel a su misión. Esta es una de las
cosas por las cuales Jesús oró especialmente en la Última Cena para que todos seamos uno. Es un punto que San
Pablo menciona en su carta a los Corintios: "En un Espíritu fuimos todos bautizados en un solo cuerpo".
Tercero, el Espíritu Santo se nos es dado a través de cada sacramento. El Espíritu Santo está siempre con nosotros.
Por su gracia todos somos capaces de traer a Jesucristo al mundo. San Pablo dice: "Nadie puede decir que Jesús es
el Señor, excepto por el Espíritu Santo".
El Espíritu Santo es nuestra presencia guiadora. Invitémoslo a que venga sobre nosotros hoy.
