Why Should I Make a Men’s Retreat? I need time to slow down and put my thoughts in order? • Rest, quiet time I am confused or distressed? • Private time available with a spiritual director I need some advice or comfort? • Informal discussion and fellowship I haven’t felt close to God for quite a while? • Opportunity for prayer Save the dates, February 21, 22, 23, 2020, and make a reservation to spend the weekend at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center. Call Chuck Fischer, 412-487-4667, Brad Fisch-er, 412-487-5109, or Jim Karcher, 724-444-5798 for more information. All men are invited to attend. either St. Ursula or St. Mary’s weekend.

Ash Wednesday - Fish Sandwich The Knights of Columbus will be selling fish sandwiches on Ash Wednesday, February 26, 2020. These fish sandwiches are the same delicious sandwiches provided at the annual Lenten Fish Dinners. The fish sandwich along with coleslaw and chips will cost $10.00 per person and will be available for eat-in OR pickup from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Marian Hall. To order, please call 412- 684-1112.

Christian Mothers/Women’s Organization Ladies, why not treat yourself to an evening out before the Lenten season begins. The February gathering of Christian Mothers’ from St. Mary’s and St. Ursula’s will take place on Thursday, February 20. All women are welcome to attend. We will begin the evening with the Rosary at 6:40 pm at St. Mary’s followed by Mass, prayers and fellowship downstairs in Marian Hall. Games and other surprises are being planned.

We have had a special two-fold request from Genesis beginning today through our Annual Tea Party meeting in April. A generous and talented homebound woman named Sharon has been making “diaper cakes” as gifts for the Genesis clients. The Genesis staff has asked us to help her by collecting supplies she can use to create these unique, themed “cakes.” Suggested supplies might include disposable diapers in any size, baby toiletries, small toys, pastel wire edged ribbon, outfits, wash cloths thin fleece blankets or socks. Many items may be purchased at a dollar store, found on a sale table or be part of your own craft supplies. Keep your eyes open to the possibilities as you shop and use your imagination. Bring your donations to either the February or April meetings. Sharon, Genesis and their clients thank you for your generous support.

Widows & Widowers will meet on February 23, at 4:30 p.m. at North Park Lounge, 8701 Babcock Blvd., 15237. Newcomers are welcome. Call Barb Lagiovane 412-486-4209 or Marge Wesolek 412-486-5621.

YOUTH MINISTRY St. Mary School News

Home with the Lord St. Mary & St. Ursula

Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and have gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Virginia Tan, mother of Lota Almonte. Please remember to pray for the consolation of their loved ones.

Looking Ahead to the Lenten Season Plan to nourish your soul with: Work, Play, Love: How the Mass Changed the Life of the First Christians. “Christians make the Mass, and the Mass makes Christians.” In Work, Play, Love, popular author from Pittsburgh, PA, Mike Aquilina shows how the Eucharist shaped three basic dimensions of life for the early Christians. Work - as they worshipped they consecrated the world itself to God. Play - using a day that was a Roman workday for leisurely, creative response to God. Love - collection for the sick and poor led to the creation of universal charity, a first in the world. The book may be purchased through Saint Mary Faith Formation Office. Discounts on the original $12.99 per copy will be given for orders of five or more copies by calling 412-486-5521 or e-mail [email protected] Consider signing up to be part of a discussion group at one of the times listed:

Volunteers Needed Vincentian Home Personal Care (111 Perrymont Road off of McKnight Road in McCandless) needs volunteers to attend events and outings with residents, such as local sporting events, museums, conservatories and more. Volunteer musicians and individuals interested in serving as a companion to residents are also needed. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Sara Markl at

412-925-8315 or e-mail [email protected].

St. Mary Faith Formation Faith Sharing for Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus is quite clear that he did not come to abolish the Law that was given to Moses, and handed on to us in the Ten Commandments. The relationships with God the Father, the members of one’s household and community are best protected in keeping those commandments. Now’s a good time to assess your relationships, both human and with the divine.

Faith Formation: Grow In Faith Together Parents/Guardians, and children who attend public schools continue Faith Formation in your family by using the Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families 2019-20 book pages 54-55.

YOUTH GROUP

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING!

High School Ministry meets Sundays at 7:00 p.m. in the Youth House

All high school students please join us Theme Virtue: While pursuing virtue is difficult, it is worthwhile. A virtue is a characteristic of a person which supports individual moral excellence and collective well being. Such characteristics are valued as a principle and recognized as a good way to be. ... In other words, values reflect what is acceptable in terms of culture, but virtues reflect individual human characteristics. February 16 The Missionary team, The Culture Project, shares their testimony and Human Dignity Talk Culture Project The Culture Project is an initiative of young people set out to restore culture through the experience of virtue. In this missionary community, young adults from around the country commit to proclaiming the dignity of the human person, and the richness of living sexual integrity. Our speakers are trained by faithful experts in the fields of medicine, psychology, philosophy, and theology. Thus, they are equipped to discuss these important topics with knowledge and understanding, while maintaining the utmost respect for the sensitivity of your children.

Choice

“If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so com-pletely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
