    Mellow Parenting is formothers with complexneeds who have at least onechild 0 - 5. This couldinclude mothers with

    mental health difficultiesincluding depression andpost-natal depression,parents who misuse alcohol,parents on ParentingOrders and those withchildren on the ChildProtection Register. The programme allows forparticipants from differentcultural and ethnicbackgrounds by supportingparents to achieve theirown goals. Diverse cultural

    values are explicitlyendorsed unless it can beevidenced they do notenhance child developmentand wellbeing.

    To recognise and

    contain parents ownemotional needs andimprove self-esteem.

    To encourage respectfor the childs autonomyand use of positive co-operation

    To learn to contain

    childrens distress andmanagement of controlissues includinganticipating childmanagement challenges.

    AM: The children will belooked after and parentsmeet to explore their ownissues, how this can impacton their parenting and what

    they would like to bedifferent.

    LUNCH: Parents haveresponsibility for theirchildren during lunch andthere will be a fun activityfor parents and children toenjoy together.

    PM: Children will again belooked after and parentswill focus on childrensneeds and the job ofparenting.

    VIDEOING:. Mothers andchildren will be videoed athome before the groupstarts and during the group.With agreement, videos will

    be shared to identifypositive parentingstrategies and thosestrategies, which parentsmay want to change.

    HOMEWORK: Parents willbe encouraged to try outnew learning at home, thiswill be shared in the grouplearning from what wentwell and what was difficult. FATHERS: Where there isa need and numbers allow, a

    There may be some roleplay Each woman is given a bookwhich accompanies t hecourse. They areencouraged to read achapter each week beforethe session and keep thebook at the end of thecourse.

    The group is a closed groupand women are encouragedto agree to a confidentiallyagreement to keepthemselves safe especiallyif they are still living withthe abuser. The women are encouragedto take responsibility fortheir own feelings andbehaviour.

    Women are encouraged tofeel positive about thefuture. The sessions maybring up strong feelings butthe focus is on eachwomans new foundawareness and not to formunhealthy relationships. Each course can take up to25 women

    Outreach Workers

    Available to work with families with a child under 5. Contact: Maureen CookLead Health Visitor Outreach Services Tel: 07983 359 409 Referral: All referrals to be sent on Childrens Centres referral form toWest St Childrens Centres.

    A number of health visitors have been seconded by health and based inthe Childrens Centres to offer support to parents in the home. Workers can offer general support and have also been trained in theTriple P parenting programme and can offer this intervention. Triple P is a multi-level system of intervention with strategies tailoredfor different complexities of family dynamics. Workers have beentrained at level 2, which is to support parents with specific concernsabout their childs behaviour or development e.g. toilet training, bed-timedifficulties, tantrums. This is a low threshold service offered to support parents at the firststage of additional needs being identified.

    The Local Authority has a duty to provide support to parents of childrenwith special needs to help liaise with schools. This is to ensure parents know of their rights and responsibilities inrelation to their children. Support can include advice, attending meetings with parents, support therelationship between school and parent and go through reports withparents etc.

    Some advisors have been trained in Triple P to support parents who arehaving difficulties in managing childrens behaviours.

    B.U.F.S.Bexley Under Fives Service This is a team of professionals from health, education and social care and

    includes CAMHS, Positive Steps, early Years Special Needs, ChildrensCentres, Educational Psychology, Behaviour Support, Think Family Teamand Womens Aid.     Referrals are made to the individual agencies and in agreement with

    parents, concerns about children are discussed in the team. By sharingconcerns in a multi-agency group, new directions for help and ways ofworking with the family are explored. A further aim of BUFS is to enable thinking together about a specificchild, in order to improve the understanding of their particulardifficulties.
