“MY EYES Search for others to join in the fellowship and service of Civitan.” Greenville Club sponsored the new Mauldin Civitan Club, Charter date May 30, 2016. As Governor, few Civi-tan events are as satisfying as presenting the Charter to a new Civitan Club. A new Civitan Club means there is an organized group of Citi- zens, with hearts and goals, to make their community a better place by providing Fel- lowship and Ser-vice to the Developmental- ly Challenged, as well as, to others Less For- tunate.

THANK YOU Greenville Civitan Club! Thank You Club Builders: Belita Broadus, Lura

Boggs, Anna Smith, and Sam Bennett! And, Thank You to Mike Taylor, our effervescent South

Carolina Field Director for Development!

Please make every meeting a recruiting meeting through Septem-ber, 2016. Let’s finish our year with plus existing club membership.

Ask someone to your upcoming club meeting.

Congratulations to our clubs that have already earned HONOR CLUB in 2015-16. YOUR club may be on the verge of Honor Club. Most clubs complete enough projects and social events to qualify and don’t turn in the form. Please take another look at the Honor Club form, fill in what you have already completed. Then schedule the remaining things happen during the next two months. Please call me if you need help.

Please Welcome Civitan International President, Debbie Juhlke, and First Gentleman, Tim Juhlke, to our SC Convention, August 26-28, 2016. ARE YOU TRUE TO THE DNA OF YOUR BEING?

We are all born with a specific one-of-a-kind DNA pat-tern. Our genes make up who we are. Even before we know we can think, we have patterns that control what we do and how we act. As we grow, we change. We observe, we learn, we develop, we are influenced, we are trained, and in many ways we become different. Many of us become believers in the God who made us, and many of us receive the Holy Spirit of Him who has created us. We become dedicated to doing His work in the world. Perhaps our Civitan clubs born with a DNA, we may start out one way, but we change. We learn our creed, many by heart. We learn and use Civitan slogans. Some we use for-ever, some we use just for a year. My year as district governor we used Can Do in ‘82. We did do a lot in Civitan that year. We grew, we helped people, I wore my Superman suit, and we trained up new and excited leaders. But, I have outgrown my Superman suit. I can’t even fly anymore. My club has dwin-dled from 80 members to 20 or so members. Our work for the world has decreased. It is like we have different DNA now. My word of encouragement to you is, no matter where you are in this pattern of change in your lives or in your Civitan club, God says: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.” You will be empowered to get back to your original DNA and go out and through love serve one another.

SC District Meeting on 5/14

PA LME TT O CIVI GR AM

The District held a very rewarding meeting on 5/14 at Our Savior Lutheran Church; we are very lucky to have them provide their ex-cellent meeting facilities for us to use! Gov. Bill Tolleson assembled an educational and enjoyable agenda with speakers and surprises from start to finish. SC District leadership was recognized for new club building and Civitan International sent club builder jackets for presentation to Bill Tolleson, Richard Gay, Jimmy Sweat, & Misty Konow. Derek Willis was on hand to review the activities of the new Lancaster Club in stopping underage drinking, cleaning up with Adopt-A-Highway, & succeeding in initiating a Jr Civitan Club!....and none too soon. Richard Gay and the Jr. Civitan leader-ship in the SC District pre-sented on their extensive community service and Civi-tan participation. However there are some clouds on the horizon as the existing clubs are facing pressures of mem-bership losses and new clubs are not being formed fast enough. They seek assistance from the District clubs in pro-moting the Jr Civitan pro-grams and initiating new Jr Civitan Clubs in their areas. So it was very timely to

hear from the 2 guest speakers that Bill brought in to address us. Tom Ledbet-ter, Assoc. VP at Midlands Technical College, woke up the morning sessions with an alert on the stratification by age of the adult population and how Millennials are the emerging major group of import. But Millenni-als have unique characteristics and psychologi-cal profiles, so Civitan better prepare to address them & meet their needs. These lessons will be key if membership is to be maintained or grown! Then in the afternoon, Dr. Dan Hall, High Point Univ., extended these lessons with a presentation on the role of social media and its key role for Civitan: as: a recruitment tool, a coordination tool, a cooperation tool, and a learning tool. He then helped to enumerate how the District can prepare to enter the 21st centu-ry with strategies to keep membership growing and Civitan relevant. Guests at the meeting included 2 candi-dates for positions in Civitan International [CI]. Kendyl Massey was on hand to ask for our sup-port in her drive to become the 2016-7 Presi-dent-Elect for CI. Lana Suggs came by to pre-sent her eminent qualifications in Civitan and ask for our votes for her as the Region 2 Direc-tor to CI for 2016-8. Both candidates made a

Two promising young people were awarded $750 scholarships from the SC Civitan District at the spring meeting. Leila Long, the chair for the SC Dis-trict Scholarship Committee, announced the 2 win-ners and was on hand to present the awards on 5/14:

good case for themselves and certainly derive ample consideration for support.. As for CI, they sent along some awards for recognition of Honor Clubs for 2014-5 and recognition of the Presidents of those clubs. So Distinguished President Awards were given to Sam Bennett, Frank DeLustro, Alex Houston, Beth Jordan, & Sevi Rindaris! Congrats to them and the success of their clubs in 2014-5. Hope we can see even a greater Honor Club participation in 2015-6! The SC District Conven-tion dates were announced as 8/26-28 and the venue will be the Hilton

With that, Mary Welch, the SC District Chair for Awards for 2015-6, announced that she needs all award applications sent to her with a postmark no later than August 8th….so keep that in mind. In July, Norfolk, VA saw an ‘invasion’ by Civitans from around the world for the an-nual convention and held out a tremendous welcome! A new feature of this convention was the officer training opportunity and it was a big success. Those attending the ses-sions for President and Pres.-Elect training found themselves among international members and obtained a global perspective of Civitan in action and ideas to take home for their clubs. This new addition to the convention will prove to be a great way to tie together clubs from around the world.

There couldn’t have been a more interesting and historic area to serve as the base of operations with Colonial Wil-liamsburg’s charm and Jamestown’s his-tory. Some even made a trip to the na-tion’s capitol with a visit to DC. The at-tendees had a blast at local venues and convention gatherings. Between pirate par-ties and formal dinners, the convention managed to effectively provide a social net-working opportunity with business & train-ing necessities. Kudos to the organizers and hosts!

The SC District was well rep-resented and managed to come away with some very visible recognition for our efforts here. The district was noti-fied it was a Quality Achievement district for 2014-5 and Past Gov. Misty Konow was given an award as a Distinguished Governor– well de-served! This newsletter, the Palmetto Civigram, was 2nd place in the Dis-trict competition and the Greenville club received second place in the club newsletter competition. Greenville also received a third place in the website competition! In Candy Box sales, the Greenville and Columbia clubs came in third place for the medium and small clubs respectively. Way to go SC Dis-trict! Now let’s get on board for the

100th Anniversary Convention of Civi-tan International [CI] at its birthplace in Birmingham, AL in 2017. See page 12 for a special offer being made by CI for registration fee of only $100 if com-pleted by November 15th. Take advantage now and get lined up for a great meeting next year.

Hello Fellow Civitans,

The current Civitan year is quickly coming to a close and there is much work to be done even now. South Carolina is working hard on mem-bership with adding 2 new clubs this year. Con-gratulations to all those hard workers. You are due a big pat on the back.

Our International Convention in Norfolk was a big success. The Board spent a lot of time discussing ways to increase membership. South Carolina is doing well in membership this year with an increase as of June 30th to 484 members. The challenge is to get our membership to 500 by year’s end. If each club only added 1 new mem-ber between now and September 30th, we could be over 500. The golf tournament and putt-n-chip raised $277,000 this year. This is a $60,000 increase over last year. Golf is such a fun game! Junior Civitan once again shines as the BEST youth program in our industry. Presi-dent’s Council continues to have steady growth. The Council reception was extraordinary this year. Thanks to all President’s Council members for your continued support of the Civ-itan International Research Center.

President-Elect Capps is making huge plans for next year. The 2017 Centennial Cele-bration in June next year will be an event not to miss. To save on registration cost you can make your reservation with International by November 15, 2016 for only $100. This is Registration only. Check out the website (civitan.org) for all the details. We have been challenged to build 100 Civitan Clubs between July 18, 2016 and June 24, 2017. South Carolina needs to do our part. Let’s help our Governor-Elect Doug McKenzie by building as many clubs as possible. Our state is large enough to have 10 more clubs. Let’s get start-ed now. The Restoration Fund is getting close. We now have $320,000 in hand and pledges of $135,000. Only 6 rooms remain needing funding. The demolition is already under way and the renovations should be in by the Convention next year. Lastly we are selling Civitan Throws to help defray the 2017 Convention Costs. The cost is $50.00 and you can see the throw at the State Convention. If you would like to order one, bring your check and we’ll get one shipped to you.

Thanks for letting me serve as your representative the past 2 years. It has been an en-joyable time for me. Civitan is more important to me than ever.

Yours in Civitan,

Lura S. Boggs

As the Honea Path Civitan Club sought a project to benefit the community and a worthy local charity, it decided that an event benefitting the Free Clinic of An-derson and Honea Path would be an excel-lent project. Dr. Kent Jenkins, a member of the club, has worked with the Free Clinic for years, I was a Board member of Free Clinic for years, and Renee McCormick (wife of Bob McCormick, longtime member

of the club) is a vol-unteer nurse with the clinic; the partnership was perfect. A great bluegrass band, Last Road, from the Easley/Pickens area, agreed to be our band for the event and our members grilled hamburgers and hot dogs as the fundraiser. We received a grant from the Town of Honea Path to fund the event and, with food sales and donations, we were able to raise $1200 for the Free Clinic which provides medical, dental, and pharmacy services for the underserved in Anderson County with clinics in Anderson and Honea Path. The day was really hot but the huge trees in the town park provid-ed much needed shade for the many folks who enjoyed the music and the burgers and for our club members who cooked and served. We

had a great turnout of club members as 12 of our 19 worked at the event. Hopefully, we will be able to receive another grant next year and can have another event for another local charity.

Columbia Civitan Club recently held two off-site meet-ings in keeping with theme: Show Prospects What We Do. The Columbia Civitan Club was Chartered in 1929 and re-mains the oldest extant Club in our South Carolina District.

June 27, 2016, Columbia Civitan met at Epworth Chil-dren's Home. Civitans were welcomed by Rev. John Holler, Epworth President and CEO. Sherri Mims shared some of Ep-worth’s 100 yr. history during campus tour. After lunch, Rev. Holler, gave an overview of Epworth's care of resident chil-dren ages 4 to 18, and Bill Tolleson shared brief Civitan over-view. All eight Epworth seniors graduated from Dreher High School and will join ten former graduates presently in college.

Children and staff participated in Creed and Pledge. Epworth Meeting was also a Designated Re-cruiting Mtg. One guest will join Columbia Club at first August Mtg. On July 11, 2016, Columbia Civitan Club met at Camp Discovery near Blythewood SC….108 acres dedicated to Giving Nature a Try… many children have never been in the woods or en-countered the beauty and benefits of nature. Camp Discovery has rolling terrain, rare species of plants and wildlife, woods, open fields, turtles, ant farms, etc. Joanna Weitzel is the passionate Executive Director.

Columbia Civitan, Dr. Jim Stiver, is an avid Butterfly Expert. He shared butterfly displays and a plethora of butter-fly stories and information with a group of 14-16 years olds at Camp Discovery to help build a butterfly garden. The Monarch Butterfly is Jim’s real passion. Camp Discovery will be participating, producing the Blythewood Butterfly Show on Labor Day weekend. Columbia Civitan has sup-ported Camp Discovery for several years. Columbia Civitan

Lancaster’s STUFF THE BUS PROJECT

The Lancaster Civitan Club is on the move and will sponsor a "Stuff the Bus" school supply drive on Tues-day, Aug. 9 in the parking lot of Lancaster High School. Fittingly the project will take place during the annual district meeting for Lancaster County teachers and will serve as a competition between schools. Lan-caster County School District will provide a bus for teachers to fill with school supplies for Lancaster County students in need. Their members will assist in helping collect the supplies and fill the bus. The teach-

ers’ meeting starts at 8:30 a.m., so the bus will need to be made ready by 7:30 a.m., in order to collect supplies as teachers are going in to the meeting. Another great Civitan project to help in serving their community. Way to go Lancaster Civitans!

WHAT IS CIVITAN?

Civitan is a worldwide, all vol-unteer service organization where men and women have an organized way of ap-proaching local community problems through service and fund raising.

We emphasize serving people with developmental disabili-ties. Local clubs are support-ed by Civitan International, which was organized in 1917 and spans over 24 countries. The word CIVITAN is a coined word that comes from the Lat-in word “CIVITAS”, which means CITIZENSHIP.
