My Fellow Civitans! This is the beginning of our second centennial. How exciting, to start this year with enthusiasm, innovative ideas, and an eye on the future. There are some fantastic Civitans in action around the District with programs that are definitely among the best in the nation. PIGS Project: from Misty Konow Your PIGS (Past Involved Governors) want you know how involved we are and we want to get you involved as well! We have a project we need your help with at every SC District meeting. For our November 4th meeting we ask that you bring new toys for children ranging from infants to 16. These toys will be donated to the Kool Kids Toy Chest at the Children’s Hospital of Richland Memorial. Each time a child un-

dergoes an invasive procedure they are given a golden key to unlock a treasure chest. Please help us to ensure that no child ever finds an empty chest. A little can go a very long way so please help!

This Kool Kids project at the November District Meeting is being led by 2 PIGS from the Greater Charleston Civitan Club, Mary Welch & Nancy Ball. So pitch in to make this a huge success and help them to make this initial PIG project a real community bene-fit.

We would love to share more details about this project and what we have planned for the next District meetings. Interested? Need a speaker for an upcoming meeting? If so, contact me at [email protected] or give me a call at (803)524-8072. Any one of your past governors would be glad to visit your club...all you have to do is ask!!!

In the coming year, we’ll be marshalling additional support for projects at each SC District Meeting and the following are planned for us to pitch in & assist our community:

January meeting:

Project - local food bank/pantry Project Leaders - Steve Doudoukjian & Mike Taylor May meeting: Project - Lighthouse For Life

Project Leader - Lura Boggs August convention: Project - backpacks for kids Project Leaders - Doug McKenzie & Ken Norton

Gov. Doug McKenzie organized a rewarding SC District Con-vention in Hilton Head from September 29 to October 1st….despite the “rain date” caused by hurricane Irma. It was a good way to end the 2016-7 year and usher in the 2017-8 Civitan Year for the SC District! Duane Capps, Civitan International President for 2016-7, was present to assist with updating the attendees on the activities and goals at Civitan International headquarters and to provide some hints to improve project and membership projects in each club. High on his list was delegation to utilize the skills and energies of more club members, and the critical role of follow up on successful completion. No doubt his easy-to-spot shirt made him an easy mark at the convention. At awards ceremonies, the district recognized the top contributors in SC for 2016-7. Some of the most notable are cited here. The lifetime achievement Dou-Doukjian Award was given to a big district contributor and inspirational Civitan, Mike Taylor….well deserved! The Otis Jeffcoat Award was given to a Civitan who has been at the heart of many of the district projects for years, Misty Konow; her contributions

have been felt in every corner of the state. Individual project awards of note went to the Civitan of the Year in the SC District, Kevin Davidson from the Greenville Club and top First Year Civitan was Magan Keilty, Dutch Fork Club. The Greenville Club racked up a series of top honors including first place in fruit-cake sales, Out-standing Newsletter, Outstanding Web-site, and top Can-dybox collections! However the top award, the Gover-nor’s Trophy for top Civitan Club in SC went to the Colum-bia Civitan Club! The depth & breadth of Civitan Club im-

Retts Syndrome, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, etc. and ask others to join us in the effort. When we bond together for support we are stronger and we can accomplish much more, let’s bond for the Civitan Research Center this year. EVOLVE- This District want to be known as volunteers making life better for the needy and special needs in our community. We have successfully delivered this service to the community for one hundred years and we will successfully deliver Civitan services into the next century by increasing our numbers, service, knowledge, and fellowship. Our Civigram and Webpage are excellent devices to spread the good news about club activities. Each club is encouraged to send your activities and pictures to the Civigram and Webpage so that we can all share in the successes of Civitans across the state. I look forward to seeing Civitans at the District Meeting on No-vember 4th. Terry Schrimscher, Public Relations Specialist from Civitan International, is our featured speaker. Terry will bring ideas and ways for us to grow and reach more people in our neighborhoods.

Each club is asked to bring a basket for the drawing. Make

your club’s basket the most ticketed basket.

Gov. Message Cont’d

WHAT IS CIVITAN?

Civitan is a worldwide, all vol-unteer service organization where men and women have an organized way of ap-proaching local community problems through service and fund raising.

We emphasize serving people with developmental disabili-ties. Local clubs are support-ed by Civitan International, which was organized in 1917 and spans over 24 countries. The word CIVITAN is a coined word that comes from the Lat-in word “CIVITAS”, which means CITIZENSHIP.
