FOREWORD

This report describes the palay and corn crop situation for January-September 2016. The estimates are the results of the October 2016 round of the quarterly Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The report also includes information on monthly prices of palay,

rice, corn and fertilizer; and cumulative actual decadal and normal rainfall. Data on prices are sourced from the Weekly Cereals and Fertilizer Price Monitoring (WCFPM) of the PSA. Rainfall data are provided by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

TECHNICAL NOTES

Production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. For palay and corn, harvest area refers to the actual area harvested during the reference quarter. Production and harvest area of palay and corn are generated from the quarterly Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) of which there are four survey rounds in a year, that is, January, April, July and October.

1.0 PALAY AND CORN SITUATION Palay and corn outputs for July to September 2016 were higher than their 2015 levels by 16.35 percent and 10.61 percent, respectively. The increment was mainly attributed to increased harvest areas due to the sufficient water supply during planting season.

PALAY Production for July-September 2016 at 2.97 million MT grew by 16.35 percent from the 2.55 million MT output in 2015. Harvest area increased to 745.00 thousand hectares from last year’s level of 653.00 thousand hectares. Yield was higher at 3.98 MT per hectare from 3.91 MT per hectare last year.

o Increments in production were noted in almost all regions except CAR, Central Visayas, Davao Region and NIR.

o These were attributed to the increase in harvest area due to:

early occurrence of rain during planting season;

rehabilitation of irrigation canals particularly in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Zamboanga Peninsula; and

movement of harvest from the previous quarter to this quarter in Mindanao regions as a result late planting due dry spell/drought in the early part of 2016.

o Yield per hectare escalated due to government interventions on High Yielding Technology Adoption (HYTA) and distribution of High Quality Seeds (HQS).

CORN Corn output in July-September 2016 at 2.66 million MT was 10.61 percent higher than the 2.41 million MT record in 2015. Harvest area expanded from 882 thousand hectares to 967 thousand hectares or by 9.61 percent. Yield per hectare stretched by 0.91 percent, from 2.73 MT to 2.75 MT.

o The growth in production was attributed to the increase in harvest area as a result of:

sufficient water supply during planting season and availability of financial assistance from private financiers in CALABARZON and Northern Mindanao;

movement of cropping in Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN; and

recovery from the adverse effects of drought in ARMM.

o In SOCCSKSARGEN, the restoration of soil fertility of corn areas left in-fallow during the drought and fewer occurrences of pests and diseases brought about production increase.

o Other factors that contributed to output increment were usage of hybrid seeds and increased fertilizer application across regions.

o On the other hand, CAR, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Western Visayas and Central Visayas posted decrements in production and harvest areas due to unrealized plantings and adverse effect of dry spell/drought in the previous quarters.

CORN Corn output in July-September 2016 at 2.66 million MT was 10.61 percent higher than the 2.41 million MT record in 2015. Harvest area expanded from 882 thousand hectares to 967 thousand hectares or by 9.61 percent. Yield per hectare stretched by 0.91 percent, from 2.73 MT to 2.75 MT.

o The growth in production was attributed to the increase in harvest area as a result of:

sufficient water supply during planting season and availability of financial assistance from private financiers in CALABARZON and Northern Mindanao;

movement of cropping in Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN; and

recovery from the adverse effects of drought in ARMM.

o In SOCCSKSARGEN, the restoration of soil fertility of corn areas left in-fallow during the drought and fewer occurrences of pests and diseases brought about production increase.

o Other factors that contributed to output increment were usage of hybrid seeds and increased fertilizer application across regions.

o On the other hand, CAR, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Western Visayas and Central Visayas posted decrements in production and harvest areas due to unrealized plantings and adverse effect of dry spell/drought in the previous quarters.

Yield was higher at 3.98 MT per hectare from 3.91 MT per hectare last year.

o Increments in production were noted in almost all regions except CAR, Central Visayas, Davao Region and NIR.

o These were attributed to the increase in harvest area due to:

early occurrence of rain during planting season;

rehabilitation of irrigation canals particularly in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Zamboanga Peninsula; and

movement of harvest from the previous quarter to this quarter in Mindanao regions as a result late planting due dry spell/drought in the early part of 2016.

o Yield per hectare escalated due to government interventions on High Yielding Technology Adoption (HYTA) and distribution of High Quality Seeds (HQS).
