“WE CELEBRATE CATECHETICAL SUNDAY”
This weekend we are celebrating Catechetical Sunday, which is an important reminder that the work of passing on our faith is the essential mission of each member of the Church. You might recall that several years ago we changed the name of our Religious Education Program to Faith Formation. We made this change to indicate a shift from a program whose primary responsibility was teaching children and others about our religion, simply passing on information, to a commitment to forming everyone into being “disciples” of Jesus today. As disciples we called through baptism to fulfill the great commission given to us by Jesus before he ascended to heaven, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. . . .” (Matt. 28:19) The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offers the following description of this year’s celebration: “The 2018 theme will be "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. As part of this year’s celebration we will be blessing at the 12:30 PM Mass, those men and women who will be serving as catechists. Along with the catechists we will also extend a special blessing on all the parents, acknowledging the significant role they play in forming their children in our Catholic faith as disciples. The church teaches that parents are the primary educators of their children in the ways of our faith. By doing so we are truly “ Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ.” As a parish community we are grateful to all of the catechists, the parents of the children in our Faith Formation Program and our entire parish as we work together to make Jesus known and loved. A special word of gratitude to Marianne Mirkow and Gina Drost, our
Coordinators of Faith Formation, and Julie Rodetis and Gloria
Sommerville, their secretarial staff. Let us pray for all those involved in our Faith Formation Program. May the Holy Spirit inspire them, especially the children of our parish, to deepen their commitment to on-going growth as disciples of Jesus! Mary, Mother of the Church, lead us closer to your son, Jesus!

What Does the Word
“Catechetical” Mean?
The word might be more
familiar than you think.
Many Catholics have
used the word
"catechism" for years,
and they know it has
something to do with the
compendium of the
Church's teachings. The
root word, "catechesis,"
is from a Greek word
meaning "to echo, or
resound." Catechesis is
the act of resounding or
bringing the Church's
teachings to the world. A
catechist is one who
teaches in the name of
the Church.
Catechetical Sunday 2018
"Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ."
Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? In 1935, the
Vatican published “On the Better Care and Promotion of
Catechetical Education”, a document that asks every country to
acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry
and to honor those who serve the Christian community as
catechists. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
has designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical
Sunday.
Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. This
ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound
dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by
the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight
this ministry and invite the entire church community to think
about our responsibility to share our faith with others.
As we all know the parents are truly the primary catechists of
their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of
faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work
of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend
parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously
their role of making their Catholic households a place where
faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of
blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes a
blessing of parents and guardians.
The Office of Faith Formation is grateful for and humbled to
assist our Catechists in living out their Baptismal promise.
Question of the Week
How do I help to pass on our faith to the next
generation?

COMING TO SAINT JAMES
SEPTEMBER 17TH
THE MEN OF OUR PARISH WILL
Introduction: Why RISE?
The RISE 30 day challenge is for men who want to know and live more fully their unique masculine identity and vocation, in an age where both are ideologically and culturally emasculated.
The RISE Challenge seeks to open up the doors to these masculine identities, and to explore their meaning and mission. For each day of the week, men are given a brief inspirational video, a quote to ponder, and a daily challenge suited to their present stage in life; single, married with children at home, married with no children at home, or divorced/separated/widowed. The recommendation is that each of these pieces be viewed and reflected upon in the morning. The estimated time frame for this daily RISE structure is roughly 5-8 minutes in total each day, with the challenges being applied throughout the day.
MORE INFO TO COME
Rise will be facilitated in Saint James by Deacon Chris

Learning from Saint Teresa of Calcutta
This month, we celebrated the feast day of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She was such an influential woman who touched the lives of so many people… and continues to do so even now! She reminds us that we are all called to be the Hands of Christ’s Mercy in our communities today. We need not be in the streets of Calcutta to do good for our brothers and sisters in Christ. We can help our community here on Long Island through the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Your gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal will help more than 600,000 of our sisters and brothers receive support and assistance from the funds shared through the CMA each year. It is rare that just one person or one parish could touch this many lives. The CMA brings us beyond the individual, the group and the parish and unites us as one Church of Long Island.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!

Remembering and Caring for our Senior Priests
Do you ever think about a favorite Pastor or Parish Priest and wonder how they are
and where they may be living?
Well, for our Senior Priests who are living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility in Amityville,
life is good and sometimes very busy.
“We are very happy that more and more of our Priests are taking advantage of this wonderful facility. We thank you for your support, we depend on it, especially now with the increasing costs we are experiencing. We couldn’t do it without you!”
- Rev. Msgr. Thomas Costa, Vicar for Senior Priests
“Since I arrived at St. Pius X, I have found living here like being at home. I have found much happiness with my fellow priests and in the entire community, and I especially appreciate the support I receive. Thank you for helping to make this home possible.”
- Rev. Msgr. T Peter Ryan
Even in retirement our senior priests retain roles as our shepherds, and St. Pius X enables
these dedicated men who live there to be fully engaged members of the community. “Still on duty,” they serve as our teachers, counselors, and spiritual leaders.
The special collection for retired priests living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility will take place next weekend. Please be as generous as possible! Thank You!

cross, and follow in my steps.” The
cross of Jesus and the crosses of his members can
evangelize us: the sick, who bear illness with
courage; the grieving, who hope against hope; the
dying, who clearly trust in the resurrection; the
suffering of our poor brothers and sisters who are
hungry and homeless, but who still trust in God’s
love.
Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in
