McManus Mid-dle School - located at 300 Edgewood Road - inLinden Monday at I:30 p.m.
The Linden schools, aided by a grant from TheMerck Company Foundation, have been participat-ing this year in TTRR, a highly successful supple-mental middle school literacy program that targetshigh-risk student populations.
TTRR uses external motivations, including rolemodels and incentives, to motivate students to readsignificantly more books outside the curriculum.
TRR strives to create an atmosphere where read-ing and academic achievement is celebrated by allstudents.
The program is provided at no charge to schoolsor students; with funding provided through grants, gifts and the support of the National Association ofBasketball Coaches Foundation - NABCF.
Krzyzewski will be joined by other collegecoaches, including Mike Rice of Rutgers, who hasworked with the Linden schools in the program.
Several representatives from the NCAA, led byPresident Mark Emmert, are also expected to attendwith NABCF Executive Director Jim Haney, sever-al members of the NABCF board of directors, rep-resentatives from Merck, Sports Illustrated KIDSeditor Bob Der and senior executives of Nike, Inc.
More than 100.000 students in 30 states now
take part in TTRR. which was created in 2002 in apartnership between Duncan - then CEO of theChicago Public Schools - the college basketballcoaches, business leaders of the NABCF and agrant from Chicago's Ariel Investments.
The initial goal was to create compelling reasonsfor middle school students to read outside the class-room and, in so doing, to improve reading compre-hension and reading scores.
The NABCF coordinates visits to middleschools by college basketball coaches, who speakon the importance of reading and academicachievement to motivate students to internalize theeducational values of our college coaches and stu-dent-athletes.
Participating students receive tickets to attendcollegiate basketball games and invitations to watchteam practices, in addition to reading-orientedincentives for reading books outside the classroom.
The rewards, along with the motivation of theserole models and peers, help these middle school stu-dents identify with the goals and achievements ofTTRR.
