Each year brings new challenges and exciting opportunities that we must be ready to face, both as an individual and as a profession. The game is ever-changing and it is our responsibility as coaches to adapt and adjust on the court and in the classroom. I want to thank all of the past TABC Presidents for their outstanding leadership and most recently to Jaime Boswell of Alice ISD for a job well done. Thank you to the UIL, Dr. Charles Breithaupt, Dr. Susan Elza, Brandy Belk, Joseph Garmon, and everyone else that had a hand in the new rule allowing coaches to do up to 2 hours of sport-specific skills with their student-athletes beginning this summer. This is a fantastic opportunity to build relationships and keep our student-athletes engaged throughout the summer. Now, it is my hope that we continue to grow this organization to be the best it can be and continue to be a student of the game. Get involved and help out by getting as many coaches as we can to join TABC or offer to serve on a committee. TABC presents Milestone Awards to Texas coaches who reach their 300th varsity win and

each multiple of 100 thereafter. If you reach one of those milestones during the season,

please let TABC know immediately so that we can order your plaque. Plaques commem-

orating 300 and 400 wins can be picked up at the TABC clinic or it will be mailed to you.

Plaques for 500 and subsequent milestones are presented during a halftime ceremony at

the UIL state tournaments. We must send a list of all coaches who will participate in that

ceremony by February 1, so please don’t wait until after your season is over to let us

know about your achievement. Please e-mail TABC at [email protected] when you

reach your 300th, 400th, 500th and subsequent century marks.

Scholarship Contributions

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches presently awards eighteen $500 scholarships to graduating seniors connected to basketball in the state of Tex-as. As more funds become available, the number and amounts of the scholar-ships will be increased. Many of you have players who have gone on to lucra-tive careers either as either professional athletes or as business leaders. Many of them would welcome an opportunity to give back to the sport that has influ-enced their lives in such a positive way. Please contact your former players and let them know about the tax exempt TABC Education Fund. To contribute, please make checks payable to the TABC Education Fund, Inc. and mail them to:

TABC P.O. Box 2886

Sugar Land, Texas 77487 If you have any questions or want to make a contribution using a credit card, please call 281-313-8222. The TABC Education Fund, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organi-zation.

The annual TABC convention and clinic held May 16, 17 and 18 in San Antonio was another successful event even though it looked to be in big trouble from the beginning. Three weeks be-fore the clinic date, TABC received bad news from the El Tropicano Hotel that the Coronado Ballroom would not be available for our event. For 20 years the clinic has gradually been built around the Coronado Room as our two banquets and site for speakers have grown to the point where it held almost half of the clinic activities. The news left TABC scrambling for replacement venues without much time to recover.

After much searching and shuffling we were able to find a home for all of our activities without much inconvenience to attendees. The Double Tree Hotel rearranged some of their events and hosted our two banquets. By moving some of our board and all of the Hall of Fame inductees rooms to the Double Tree we were able to avoid the ballroom rental fees and limit travel for most of the guests. We held our breath as some speakers were moved to smaller ballrooms and fortunately everything fit. We apologize to any who were inconvenienced by the unavoida-ble late changes in event sites.

Now for the good news: All speakers were informative and well attended. The on court demonstrations and vendor show at St Mary's University enjoyed continued success as the TABC clinic remains the largest and best state hosted clinic in the nation. For the seventh con-secutive year (10th of the last 11 years), over 2,000 coaches were in attendance and more than 70 vendors showed their wares helping our coaches prepare their budgets for next season.

Since the Coronado Ballroom, like the Municipal Auditorium, is now an important part of our history, but a thing of the past, TABC will be moving to a new host hotel for future clinics. The dates for next year are May 14, 15, 16, 2020 (the week after the state track meet) and the Sep-tember newsletter will announce our new clinic headquarters and how to make reserva-tions. We promise that the changes will be improvements as TABC continues to best serve its members.

People, Places and Things

Texas A&M University-Texarkana has started a men's basketball program and named Ryan Wall as their first head coach. They will play in the NAIA as part of the Red River Conference which Ryan is well aquainted with after serving as head coach at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. He compiled a 109-42 record in his 5 years as head coach at OLOL including a trip to the sweet 16 and two trips to the Elite Eight. After his successful playing career at Coppell un-der Coach Brad Chasteen, Coach Wall played basketball at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque and TCU, where he led the team in free throw percentage and steals. He was a graduate assistant at Southern Alabama and an assistant at Ranger JC and Our Lady of the Lake before getting the head job. A TABC member, Ryan is the son of Jim Wall, a long time high school and college coach and one of the original members of TABC. Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts (30 minutes south of Boston) is a NCAA division III college that currently has 6 Texas natives playing for their men's basketball team. Nick Sampeck (Fr) from Blanco, Sean Odum (Jr) Rowlett, Azwaldo Terrazas (Fr) Odessa Permian, DJ Whaley (Fr) Buena Vista, Elijah Martinez (Fr) Friendswood and Jaren Brooks (So) Grandfalls-Royalty all played high school basketball in Texas. The Bulldogs are coached by Rico Cabral and play in the New England Collegiate Conference. The word is spreading that Texas plays good basketball and more mid majors and small colleges are coming south to reap the harvest. TABC immediate past president Jaime Boswell has moved on from the coaching ranks into administration. He is leaving Flour Bluff, where he was the boys head coach, to Alice ISD where he will be Assistant Athletic Director. Jaime just completed his year as the TABC president after serving as an officer for the past 3 years. Before that he served on the board and many committees in addition to being an important part of the TABC Camp of Champs. He has pledged to continue to support TABC from an administrators perspective in any way possible. We will hold him to that promise and wish him luck in his newest challenge. Hall of Fame coach Bill Krueger lost his beloved wife Martha on May 22 at the age of 78. The couple was married 59 years ago while Coach Krueger was coaching at San Marcos High School where he won his first state championship in 1965. He won a second state championship at Clear Lake and had 1096 career wins. Bill and Martha have two daugh-ters, Kristy and Kimberly and four grandchildren. Donations in Martha's name can be made to Special Spaces Houston.
