Dear Friends,

Today's Scripture readings show us that our human curiosity is nothing new. Even in OldTestament times, people were wondering if there was an afterlife, and what it was like for those in it.The seven brothers in today's reading from 2 Maccabees were convinced that there was and that itwould be good. Their trust in God's faithfulness was strong enough that they willingly enduredtorture and death rather than betray God's law - in the hope that life, limb and more would berestored to them in the Resurrection.

But even for faithful Jews, the question was not yet settled in Jesus' time. The Sadducees, those who deny that there is a Resurrection, tried to trap Jesus into making some kind of foolishstatement in contradiction of settled doctrine by asking him whose wife a widow who married sevenbrothers in succession would be once they were all in heaven. I can imagine Jesus putting his handto his forehead, shaking his head, sighing and thinking "Oi vey - they just don't get it," and going onto explain that everything is different in the Resurrection. So different, in fact, that we can't evenpicture what it would be like. But Jesus assures us, and our faith tells us, that all will be wellbecause we will be with him forever, and with those who have gone before us, in a place that he hasprepared for us in his Father's house. He further promises that we can get there through him "I amthe way, the truth and the life."

Some may think that this means they've got a guaranteed spot in heaven, and that thereforethere's no need to do anything in this life to prepare except enjoy ourselves. I see it differently. Ithink that the promise of eternal life means that everything we do in this life matters greatly-thatevery choice we make has cosmic significance. St. Paul tells the community at Thessalonica intoday's second reading that his hope is that the Lord may "...encourage your hearts and strengthenthem in every good deed and word." And then there is that image in Matthew's Gospel of Jesus thejudge separating sheep and goats according to how they treated one another (and therefore treatedhim) on earth. It seems that what we do matters very much indeed.

Still, speculating about what heaven may be like can be a beautiful prayer. You may befamiliar with Bart Millard's song "I Can Only Imagine". The refrain lyrics say:

“Surrounded by your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for you, Jesus, or in awe of you be still? Will I stand in your presence, or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing 'Hallelujah'? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine, I can only imagine."

Our Padre Serra Conference of theSociety of St. Vincent De Paul hasidentified many needy families in ourcommunity. With the holidays fastapproaching, we are asking if you wouldlike to share your blessings with thesefamilies through the Adopt-A-Familyprogram this Christmas.

If you would like to adopt a family thecommitment would be to purchase a giftfor each family member. To make giftgiving easier for you, we have asked thefamilies to supply a list of giftideas/needs. You may deliver the gifts tothe family yourselves or have themdelivered by our Boy Scouts. If youwould like to participate or if you haveany questions about the program, pleasecall Ursula 987-9784. Thank you!

Angel Tag Gift ShareIt is that time of year when we have a chance to provide a gift for a child or adulton Christmas morning. Padre Serra Parish is collecting gifts for 1000 childrenand adults. If you would like to provide a gift, select an Angel Tag from theChristmas tree in the narthex beginning November 23. Buy at least one of theitems listed on the back and attach the ANGEL TAG firmly to the outside of thepackage. This year we are collecting gifts for St. Francis Parish in Fillmore, theSan Salvador Mission in Piru, the RAIN project, the OASIS program and theImmaculate Conception Parish in New Cuyama. Save the Date!Concern AmericaSunday, December 1

On Sunday, December 1, volunteers from Concern America will be in thecourtyard with unique, quality handcrafts that provide us with the opportunity topurchase conscientiously. The gifts we find for special events, holidays, or tobrighten our own homes are an exchange of caring with impoverishedcommunities in developing countries. This year we have many new crafts fromBangladesh, El Salvador and Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras. Inspired bynature, these beautifully crafted textiles, ceramics and wood products, honorindigenous traditions, and were selected to be reminders that when a ConcernAmerica product is purchased we are providing a source of income to materiallypoor communities; promoting human scale endeavors; eco-friendly workpatterns; and fair working conditions.

See’s Candy Sale for the HolidaysGot Chocolate?St. Vincent de Paul will be selling a wonderful selection ofchocolates for the holidays after all Masses on November 23-24 and December14-15. All proceeds will help the needy in our community. Thank you.

Reflecting on God’s WordWe have many hungers in life, and sometimes we canoverindulge in response to them. Still, one that nevergoes away is our hunger to be connected. Wedesperately shun living in isolation. For many it ismarriage that feeds that hunger, but so do family orfriendships or the simple attention one finds in acommunity of faith or a collection of back yards. Theyall seem to feed our yearning for deep life, even whenwe are inattentive or preoccupied. A person of faithmight even say that these communities are God beingfaithful to us.This week’s Gospel is one that turns the tables on us. Itsnares us in our own curiosity about what heaven willbe like, and whether we will know the ones we loveand be with our spouses, and what if we’ve beenmarried seven times? And that’s just where Jesus turnsthe tables and says it’s about relationships and notabout bodies to be with; it’s about our deepest hungersto be united, even beyond marriage and friends andneighbors and communities of any sort. That’s whatresurrection is about, Jesus replies, and then reminds usone more time (as if we’d been deaf all the other times)that God has promised it and God is faithful. God “isnot God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all arealive,” is how Luke has Jesus saying it (Luke 20:38). Inother words, all of our relationships of loving andcaring, especially those of marriage, are but hints ofreal and full life, and the best is yet to come. So whatyou’ve found in marriage, even if you’ve been marriedseven times, is just the beginning.—Rev. Joseph J. JuknialisCopyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

What is ‘relational bullying’?Relational bullying is unwarranted, persistent, unwelcome behaviorin the form of criticism, isolation, or fabricated allegations that candamage relationships. Examples include social exclusion (“You can’tbe with us”), spreading rumors (“Did you hear…?), and withholdingfriendship (“I won’t be your friend if you…”). Though relationalbullying can often seem ambiguous to outside observers and oftengarners less attention than physical bullying or verbal bullying, itshould not be discounted simply as normal, adolescent behavior. Infact, several recent studies suggest relational bullying is morestrongly related to emotional distress and teen depression than anyother form of bullying. Make sure your child’s school does nottolerate such behavior among its students.

Living God’s WordAs we go through life we’d like to know just whom we are going tospend eternity with and what it’s going to be like. The truth is thatnone of us knows. Maybe the best we can do at this time is lovethose around us now, and let God take care of our future.Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
