Life Stories El viaje de México fue difícil. Salí con 2,500 pesos a Tijuana y mi sobrina me prestó dinero en Sinaloa y nos tuvi-mos que quedar a trabajar dos meses en Sinaloa para ahorrar 5,000 pesos con lo que llegamos a Tijuana. Mi esposa mientras tanto sufría de convulsiones. Encontramos un coyote que nos escon-dió en un puente. Pasamos por un des-filadero tratando de no caernos en el río. Pasamos muchos problemas y la migra nos agarró. Nos animamos más a cruzar otra vez y así llegamos a Los An-geles. Llegamos a Estados Unidos en 1999, el mes de agosto, y en este mes nos ocurrió algo bueno, Maria embarazó. Maria empezó a mirar a los doctores y muchas puertas se nos abrieron. Los

sos. My cousin in Sinaloa lent me some money, but we had to stay there and work for two months to save 5,000 pesos which got us to Tijuana. During this time, my wife was suffer-ing from seizures. We found a coyote who hid us beneath a bridge. We walked along a steep ledge and tried not to fall in the river. We had lots of problems and then the border patrol caught us. We got up the courage to try crossing again and this time we made it to Los Angeles. We arrived in the United States in August of 1999 and in the same month something wonderful hap-pened—Maria became pregnant. She began going to the doctor and many doors started opening for us. The doctors discovered that our lives had not been easy and they decided to

My name is Roberto and I have my wife, Maria, a son named Marco and a daughter named Olivia who was just born on December 7, 2006. We are a family of four and our life has not been easy. I suffered and still suffer from a se-rious bout of depression. In 1985, I was afflicted with this sickness and struggled for a long time to overcome it, and so it was difficult to get where I am today. Because of this sickness I have learned to appreciate many things God gives us because he has a purpose for everything. Maria’s life has not been easy either because she suffers from seizures. They began when she was twelve, but now, thank God, they are finally stopping.

Our trip from Mexico was difficult. I went to Tijuana with only 2,500 pe-

help us without charging us a dime. Marco was born in 2000. We came to the U.S. mainly to pros-per and also to get medical help. It was a good decision because with the illnesses we had we wouldn’t have survived. Working hard for a better life, we had the opportunity to buy a mansion, well, actually a small trailer where we live now. Here there is no violence and we’re far from drunken parties and fighting. We live a tran-quil life. There are some challenges here though, like negative people and those who exploit others for personal gain. There’s also lots of discrimina-tion both among Mexicans and be-tween Mexicans and Americans. I don’t like the way some people raise

Yo sufría y todavía sufro de una de-presión muy grave. En 1985 enfermé por esta enfermedad y luché mucho tiempo para salir adelante, pero me fue difícil llegar hasta donde estoy. Por esta enfermedad he valorado mu-chas cosas que Dios nos da porque Dios tiene un propósito para cada uno. La vida de Maria no ha sido fácil tampoco, porque sufre de con-vulsiones. Empezaron cuando tenía 12 años pero ahora ya los están pa-sando, gracias a Dios.

VolunteerSer Voluntario negativa y la que explota a otros por ambición, y hay mucha discrimina-ción aquí tanto de Mexicanos con Mexicanos o de Norte Americanos. No me gusta como educan mal a los niños que les responden a los padres y como los niños hacen lo que ellos quieren. La educación está mejor aquí pero depende de los padres. La situa-ción económica con trabajo no nos falta nada. Aquí somos ricos, con un poco tenemos comida para toda la semana con el salario. Mis metas son muchas. Quiero tra-bajar y con lo poquito que pueda ga-nar comprar mi casa en México y po-ner un negocio de pinturas allá. Aho-ra estamos estabilizados y tratamos de ser felices con dos hijos, en una ben-dición de Dios.

Here we are rich and earn enough to have food for the whole week. I have many goals. I want to work and, with the little bit of money I make, buy a house in Mexico and start my own painting business. For now, we’re stable and making the best of life here with our two children, blessed be to God.

Here you feel like you are in your own home because you have the oppor-tunity to express ideas and to share them with other women who have the same needs and feelings as you. You can also relax because there is a childcare service with someone to look after your children. Hola! Dear Friends of the Latino Community Association,

It’s been quite a year for the Latino Community Association! We changed our name from El Programa de Ayuda and headed in a new direction with broader programs which in-crease our outreach. We moved our office to the Mike Maier County building where we have a more formal office space to offer client services. After the groundwork left us by Father Michael Walsh we hired a full-time Executive Director, Brad Porterfield, and have increased our staff from one person in early 2006 to a current staff of five. We continue our one-on-one client care services which we still call Programa de Ayuda, but the most exciting changes are the classes, programs, support groups, health screenings and celebrations we now offer. We feel that education is the best way to help Latinos and their families integrate with the Cen-tral Oregon community. Our partnerships with many organi-zations are helping us to provide new opportunities to Latino families living, working and raising their families here. The board and staff of the Latino Community Association are a dedicated group of people that continue to work hard to provide opportunities for families. We have an incredible group of volunteers and we know there are so many more peo-ple in the community that want to get involved. Because of this, we are taking significant steps to increase our outreach to both the mainstream as well as Latino communities. Our challenges in 2007 have been many. As a non-profit we are continually aware of our need to reach out to the commu-nity for support. We have embraced our new directions and growth with enthusiasm and we are working hard to fund pro-grams that benefit our region as a whole. I am grateful for the individual contributions and support of the business commu-nity this past year. We most certainly need your continued fi-nancial assistance to help build a cohesive Central Oregon. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to serve as past president and I am excited about the new energy and leadership that AJ Losoya brings to LCA. - Marilyn Forestell

¡Ha sido un año increíble para nosotros! Se cambió el nom-bre de El Programa de Ayuda y hemos lanzado nuevos progra-mas para servir aún más a la comunidad. Nos mudamos a nuestro nuevo local ubicado en el edificio Mike Maier del Con-dado de Deschutes. Después del buen empiezo establecido por el Padre Michael Walsh, nuestro fundador, contratamos a un director ejecutivo, Brad Porterfield, y desde entonces au-mentamos el personal de solo una persona a principios de 2006 a cinco personas ahora en 2007. Los cambios más destacables vienen a base de las nuevas cla-ses de Inglés, programas, grupos de apoyo, seminarios educati-vos y las celebraciones que ofrecemos y apoyamos. Creemos que la educación es la mejor forma de ayudar a la comunidad Latina integrarse con la comunidad de Oregon Central. Nues-tra participación con varias organizaciones nos ha ayudado a proveer nuevas oportunidades a familias Latinas que viven, tra-bajan y crían sus hijos aquí. La colaboración sigue siendo nuestra estrategia principal. La mesa directiva y el personal de Latino Community Asso-ciation se dedican a proveer oportunidades a las familias Lati-nas. Contamos con un grupo de voluntarios increíbles y reco-nocemos que hay muchas más personas que tienen el deseo de ayudar. De esta manera involucramos a la comunidad ofre-ciendo oportunidades para participar y contribuir al bienestar de todos. Leadership Profiles Perfiles de los líderes A.J. Losoya Board President A.J. was born in Portland, OR and was raised on a poultry farm just outside of Woodburn. He continued his education at Western Oregon University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Busi-ness with a focus in finance and marketing. He is currently Vice President and Branch Manager of Columbia River Bank’s Wall St. office in Bend. A.J. loves being a part of the business community and has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and PROS of Central Oregon. A.J. is married and the father of two sons.

Jaime Aguirre Board Vice President Jaime was born and raised in California. He has a strong interest in lending a hand to issues that help im-prove the overall wellbeing of a community. He has partici-pated in organizations feeding the homeless and those less for-tunate, enhancing economic op-portunities for businesses, and guiding youth to academic ex-cellence. Jaime is fluent in Spanish and has served as spokesperson for a fortune 500 company. He and his wife own and manage Millette’s Kitchen Store in Bend.

Brad Porterfield Executive Director Brad is originally from Riv-erside, California. He lived and studied in Oaxaca, Mex-ico and worked in Uruguay with the Peace Corps as an En-vironmental Planner and Educa-tor. In Oregon, he has worked with low-income housing com-munities in Eugene/Springfield, a growth impact planning group in Hermiston, and the Alliance of Forest Workers & Harvesters based in Eugene. Brad studied Natural Resource Planning and Spanish at Humboldt State Uni-versity and Community and Re-gional Planning (MCRP) at the University of Oregon. Brad is married and has one son.

Rossy Gomez Assistant Director Rossy has been the Assis-tant Director since 2004. She is from Sonora, Mex-ico and has lived in Central Oregon for eight years. Rossy has served on several boards and committees and she is very involved in her community in Sisters. In Sonora, she received a Technical Degree in Microbiol-ogy and a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education. In 1988, she moved to Arizona to study Eng-lish, Child Care and Computer classes at Pima Community Col-lege. She has been teaching Gymnastic and Fitness classes since 1984. Rossy is married and the mother of two teenag-ers.

Ella ha trabajado con la Asocia-ción, anteriormente El Progra-ma de Ayuda, desde el año 2004. New DirectionsNuevos Enfoques In addition to continuing and improving our information & referral services, we will: 1) become a service provider of educational classes and seminars; 2) develop a childcare service to maximize participation and en-sure quality care during our events; 3) increase the community’s involve-ment in our work by expanding and improving our Volunteer Program; and 4) create opportunities to connect people in our communities in meaningful ways. Father Mike Walsh and his supporters In 1997, one of the priests at St. Francis Catholic Church (Bend, Oregon) opened a telephone line to his office to help the growing Spanish-speaking members of his community access information and find support for their families as they worked to adjust to a new culture. He was commonly known as “Father Mike” or Padre Miguel. Later, supporters of the helpline formed an Hispanic Council, which in 2000 became a non-profit organization called El Programa de Ayuda (Help Program). Father Mike was transferred to a church in California in July 2006. He wrote the following letter in January 2007.

My dear friends at the Latino Community Association,

Congratulations on the great progress you have made dur-ing the last year or so. It is truly wonderful to hear about all you have done and are doing to reach out to Latinos and help them become more self-sufficient and better integrated in the community. People have told me about such activities as your Cultural celebrations such as the fiestas for El Dia de Inde-pendencia in September and Las Posadas in December; the series of English conversation classes as well as the twice weekly English as a Second language classes; weekly presenta-tions on such topics as worker’s rights and other areas about which Latinos need to be informed; the job fair, the health screenings; the monthly women’s support group, and I’m sure there is much more I haven’t heard about yet. And all of this has been done while continuing to respond to the frequent calls from Latino families who ask for help with such issues as dealing with the police and government agencies, getting assistance from local social service groups, dealing with school problems, gaining access to healthcare, how to get help with problems with landlords, housing, and employers as well as doing simple translations and interpreta-tions for the many Latinos who speak little English. And now you are beginning this newsletter to help people learn more about the great work you are doing and have been doing for eight years now. I am very proud of how far the organization has come in fulfilling the goals and dreams of those of us who helped start it back in 1999. May God bless all who have helped it continue to grow. Fr. In honor of . . . Homenaje a . . .

En 1997, uno de los sacerdotes de la iglesia St. Francis (Bend, OR) abrió una línea telefónica a su oficina para ayudar a la creciente comunidad Latina para que se informara y encontrara algún apoyo para sus familias mientras batallaban a acostumbrarse a una cultura nueva. Era conocido comúnmente por el nombre Padre Miguel. Luego, las personas que apoyaban la línea de ayuda formaron el Consejo Hispano, lo cual en el año 2000, se convirtió en una organización sin fines de lucro que se llamaba El Programa de Ayuda. Padre Miguel se trasladó a otra iglesia en California en junio de 2006 y escribió la siguiente carta en enero de 2007.

Estimados Amigos de la Asociación de la Comunidad Latina, Felicitaciones por el gran progreso que han hecho ustedes durante el año pasado. Es realmente maravilloso oír de todo lo que han hecho y que están haciendo para extender la mano a los Latinos y para ayudarles a ser autosuficientes y más integrados en la comunidad. La gente me ha contado sobre algunas activida-des como las celebraciones culturales incluyendo las fiestas para el Día de Independencia en septiembre y La Posada en diciem-bre; las clases de conversación y las clases de inglés que se dan dos veces a la semana; presentaciones semanales sobre temas como los derechos de los trabajadores y otros más que los Lati-nos necesitan información; el feriado de trabajo, las evaluaciones de la salud; el grupo de ayuda para mujeres cada mes, y yo estoy seguro que hay mucho más que no he oído todavía. Y todo de esto se ha hecho mientras que continúan respon-diendo a las llamadas frecuentes de las familias Latinas que piden ayuda con las problemas como tratando con la policía y de las agencias del gobierno, consiguiendo ayuda de grupos de servicio social locales, tratando con los problemas de la escuela, encon-trando acceso a los programas de cuidado de salud, cómo conse-guir ayuda con problemas con los propietarios, la vivienda, y a patrones así como hacer traducciones y las interpretaciones sim-ples para muchos Latinos que hablan poco inglés. Y ahora uste-des están comenzando este boletín de noticias para ayudar a sa-ber más sobre el gran trabajo que están haciendo y estaban haciendo por ocho años hasta hoy día. Tengo mucho orgullo de hasta dónde ha llegado la organiza-ción a completar las metas y los sueños de nosotros que ayuda-mos a fundarla en 1999. Que Dios bendiga a todos que han ayudado a la organización continuar crecer.
