This free report is about how to make money from the Envato Marketplace (Themeforest.net, Graphicriver.net, Audiojungle.net, Videohive.net and Flashden.net). As you may know Envato has a referral program (found at any of the sites above under Make Money on the left) where you can earn money by marketing their products and you earn money when someone signs up and buys any product through your referral URL. Their referral program is better known as an affiliate pro-gram... where you get paid a commission, again when someone signs up and deposits money to purchase any product throughout the Envato network.

With this report I wanted to create something really valuable. I was going to originally title this collection “How to Never Pay for Another Envato Product Again.” but decided against it because you can do whatever you want with the money you earn. You don’t have to reinvest the money back into Envato products but you surely can as I do sometimes. The money you earn goes into your account and you can either purchase more of the stuff you love or you can withdraw it. It’s up to you. You could essentially use this info to earn money to get Envato products for free. So hope you enjoy!

Before I dive in I want to give you a little background on myself. My name is Jeff Hendrickson (nuvru). I’m a web designer and SEO. I work from home and have since 2001. I earn my living from doing design and SEO, but also from affiliate marketing. I make extra money every month promoting products I work with and feel can help other people in their online businesses. When I stumbled upon Envato’s network from PSDtuts.com I knew I hit upon something unique. And to my delight they offer a referral program so I knew immediately I could earn some extra money promoting the products you find across their network. So now you know a bit about me, let’s get started.

First off I want to say this is not a get rich quick scheme. It does take some work and a tiny ini-tial amount of money to get started. But as I’ve found the work and the small amount of money this takes to do really pays off. I can’t tell you how cool it is to receive recurring commissions for something you do once. I earn commissions daily from blog posts I created months back. This however isn’t about just doing something once and forgetting about it. It does take some ongoing work to really make good money, but it’s still pretty easy. And if you’re already familiar with html editing programs, photoshop and wordpress as I assume you are, the majority of the work is super simple.

# Quick SummarySo here’s a summary (as I’m sure your busy and want me to get to the point) what I’m going to show you is how to use a showcase wordpress theme (found in my Themeforest book-mark collection) and turn it into a site that generates revenue. I chose a showcase word-press theme to work with and posted Envato products to it. Then with some SEO work and promotion I build up traffic to it and watch the commissions roll in. That’s basically it. You can do this with a showcase theme or really any HTML template, but using wordpress works the best and a showcase them makes it easier and more attractive then a general wordpress theme. And as you may know Google loves blogs so this works out great.

This is not about creating spammy sites just to earn cash. This is about creating a really valuable informative site that will get picked up by search engines and not get banned over night. A site like this should earn you money for months and years to come if you take care of it properly. And you can apply this technique to any products if you have interests in other areas besides resources for creatives.

# Getting StartedSo for this project I chose the “Design Showcase” theme from Kriesi. There are several showcase themes offered on Themeforest.net but I chose Design Showcase because it is set up better for SEO then the others. And I want my site to rank as close to the top as it can. So the structure of this theme is important. I have a live site set up with this theme at Loungeblossom.com. Loungeblossom.com was a domain I had lying around and it seemed to fit with the theme of the site so that’s what I used.

You can use any domain you want for your site. It doesn’t have to have keywords in it to rank which is an old SEO myth. Although one tip is if you can find a dot com with the exact keyword phrase you want to rank for then I’d pick that one. Google gives precedence over dot coms with the exact phrase in them. No other domain extensions work so keep that in mind. Even if you don’t pick a domain with your keywords in it I always recommend pick-ing a dot com because its the first extension people think of, the best for branding and is worth more if you later go to sell your site. And don’t bother with hyphens in your domain. They’re not needed and lessen the value of your domain.

So you need a good domain (I get mine from Godaddy) and some hosting to start. You will be installing wordpress on your site so you need hosting that meets the requirements of wordpress. Usually if you find a hosting company that offers Cpanel as the control panel they have Fantastico installed which allows you to easily install a number of scripts includ-ing wordpress with just a few clicks. One of the hosts I recommend is Hostgator. I’ve used them for years and have always found their service great. And their support is second to none. You can get a hosting account for as little as $6.95/mo prepaid for a year. If you don’t want to prepay you can start with just $9.95/mo. And that’s what I use.

You want to install wordpress at the root of your site, not in a subfolder. Once you install wordpress you’ll want to install some form of click tracking software to track the clicks each link on your site receives. This is good to measure how many clicks it takes to receive a commission. I use a script called Shorty which has worked out very nicely. It does require a MySQL database but this makes it more robust then if you were to just use say your htac-cess file, which you can do also but you won’t have any click tracking capabilities. The other nice thing about this script is it allows you to create clean short URL’s that hide your affiliate link from plain view. People are more likely to click on a link that looks like it’s on the same domain then if you are sending them to another site with a long URL ending in your referral code. So having shorter URL’s that point to a subdirectory on your site works

# Getting Startedout better. I install Shorty in a subdirectory named “out”, “go”, “visit” or something of that nature. So your links would look like this www.ourdomain.com/out/themeforest instead of www.themeforest.net?ref=nuvru

I won’t go into details here about how to install a theme or plugins on wordpress as I as-sume you already know how to do that. If you don’t a quick Google search will help you out. From here you should have wordpress installed, Shorty installed (or some kind of URL shortening/tracking script), your Design Showcase theme installed and now having a work-ing site. You’ll now need to set up wordpress to be as SEO friendly as can be.

After you add some posts your site should look like the screenshot above.

# Optimizing WordpressYou can do this quickly by setting up your permalinks within your wordpress admin. Under settings on the left you’ll find a link called permalinks. Now most wordpress SEO tutorials tell you to just put in %postname% which will create static URL’s for your posts and pages that look like this www.yourdomain.com/mycoolpost/ but you can go one step further and put in /%postname%.html. This will create URL’s that look like this www.yourdomain.com/mycoolpost.html. This is important because it brings your content to the root of your site and not in a subdirectory. For SEO the closer your content is to the root of your domain the better. It is seen as more important by search engines then if your content is burried a few subdirectories deep.

Now you’ll want to head over to Settings > Writing and scroll to the bottom of the page and update your Update Services to include a few more sites. What this does is ping update services when you post new posts. This updates other sites and helps to bring in traffic. You can find a list of update services here.

That’s a great start so far and if you want to go a step further you can install the SEO All in One plugin which allows you to do a few more things like tweak your Meta title and descrip-tion tags for each page. You can install this now or install it later once your site starts re-ceiving traffic. That’s the quick way to SEO a wordpress blog from an on-page perspective. The majority of your work to gain traffic will be from off-page SEO which just means getting good links from other sites and a bit of social networking.

It’s now time to start adding content to your site. There are so many products listed in the Envato marketplace that there’s almost endless products to promote. This is great but you should focus your efforts on a niche to make it easier to start out. For Loungeblossom I just went with some of the most popular products. I know from the amount they sold that they are popular so it’s a safe bet to go with popular sellers because, well people have already shown interest. This doesn’t mean you always have to go with the products that have sold the most. You could focus on less popular items and allow your visitors to find the most popular products on their own.

# Adding ContentIf you already enjoy going through Envato’s sites looking for cool new resources like I do then this part is fun. Basically you want to find a template, or any product from their net-work that you think is good and grab a screenshot of it as well as the name, description, any other details and the URL. With this info you can now create a post about it in word-press.

I start with the screenshot. For the Design Showcase theme you need to create two screen-shots (see instructions). This takes less then a minute in Photoshop. Export them to a folder on your site called /screenshots or something like that. I name them like this, tem-plate1.jpg for the small screenshot and template2.jpg for the larger one. I put them in pairs so I can easily find them later. Once you have a lot of screenshots in your folder it’s good to be able to find them fast.

Next I log into Shorty and create a shortened URL for the referral link. Remember to get a commission you need to add your referral code to the end of any URL you send traffic to. So if I were sending traffic to the Design Showcase theme which is at http://themeforest.net/item/design-showcase/19791 I’d add ?ref=nuvru to the end of it so it looks like this http://themeforest.net/item/design-showcase/19791?ref=nuvru - where nuvru = your referral code.

It’s important to get your referral URL’s correct! I just noticed last week that I had created a post about portfolio themes on my blog and I just added ?=nuvru instead of ?ref=nuvru to my links and guess what. Even though the links got hundreds of clicks I didn’t earn any commissions for sending that traffic. Big whoops! Probably hundreds of dollars down the drain because I left out 3 little letters. So double check your links!

When you have your screenshots uploaded and your shortened URL you want to go into wordpress and create a new post. When you do you’ll see an area at the bottom of the page where you can add the direct links to the screenshots and your affiliate URL. I start here adding this info first. Then I go up and add the title and description.

# Create Unique ContentYou can copy and paste the description that the author used on their product to your post, but you should rewrite it so it’s unique. Search engines like unique content and taking the time to make your post text unique goes a long way. If you think about it, Envato’s sites and pages hold a lot of authority and already rank for their content and keywords. If you can differentiate your posts by using different keywords and content you’ll have a greater chance at ranking your pages amongst the millions on Google.

I know it might take a few extra minutes to change up the text but it’s absolutely worth the time. You don’t want the search engine bots to arrive at your site and say,, oh this guy or gal has the same content as Themeforest.net. That would be bad. You want them to see unique or semi-unique content. Trust me it goes a long way.

After you add a unique title and description you should tag and categorize your post ac-cordingly. Don’t go overboard here. You can see on Loungeblossom I added less then 10 tags to each post and used only one category per post. You can add posts to more then one category but you should keep it targetted.

Oh, and at the end of the blog post I add a link to the demo and page where you can pur-chase the product. This is a kind of “call to action” where I say what you should do next. When people read the description of the product they will naturally want to follow a link or direction on where to get the product. Since you already have your referral URL shortened and placed in the bottom link field you can copy this and link any text in your post to the demo/purchase page. Hit Post and now your first blog post is live!

When I write out the instruction on this it sounds like a lot of work, but trust me each post should take you less then 5 minutes. If you spend a half hour or an hour a day doing this you should have a lot of posts built up over a month. You can do less or more. Again it’s up to you.

So you have a cool showcase site showcasing cool products from Envato, now what? It’s time to market it!

SEO is free if you do it yourself but I’ll talk a bit about PPC too incase you want to supercharge your efforts.

You should do some quick keyword research first to figure out how many people are search-ing for certain keywords to guide you on what keywords to focus on. Search Google for “keywords” without the quotes and you’ll find their free keyword tool. Type in a bunch of varations of keywords and key phrases related to your site into the keyword field. It will then list keywords and how many searches a month each receives. If Broad Match is se-lected it will give you higher numbers then if you choose Exact match. Exact match is just that.. more exact. Exact match numbers are a lot less because you’re asking Google about exact phrases. If you type in “wordpress magazine theme” and choose exact match it will tell you exactly how many people search per month for that exact phrase. It won’t include searches for “free wordpress magazine theme”. If you want that included select broad match.

If you’re promoting templates then type in keywords like “website template”, “site tem-plate”, wordpress template” etc. Also making sure Use Synonyms is selected will retrieve more results and give you more ideas on what you can optimize for.

Another way to find more keywords is to use the Website Content method which allows you to type in a website URL and pull keywords from any site. So you could type in www.themeforest.net for instance and get a whole new set of keywords, some you might not have thought of.

You can export these keywords into a text file to refer to later or you can use them in any PPC campaigns if you decide you want to use PPC. Unfortunately you can’t export the number of searches performed so you’ll have to use the keyword tool again later if you want that info.

It’s good to know that longer tail keywords are easier to rank for. Keywords, or key phrases like “wordpress portfolio templates” that are longer are easier to rank for then say “word-press templates”. It takes quite a bit more work to rank for single or double word key-words.

If you’re just starting out I’d recommend focusing on longer tail keywords that get 5,000 or less searches a month. Type each key phrase into Google and see how many competing sites there are. The lower amount of sites to compete with the better. I find anything with less than a million competing sites is fairly easy to rank for. Anything above a million and

you’re going to have to do more work. Your site will need to be larger in how many pages it has, will most likely need to be a bit older and you’ll need more targetted links pointed at your site.

Overall if you do some decent keywords research upfront you’ll know exactly what kind of titles you need to title your posts with. If 1,000 people a month search for “corporate website templates” then you should by all means create a good post with that exact title on your site.

I’ve been doing that for years on my main blog and I always rank high for the key phrases I use. To see an example search Google for “wordpress seo theme” without the quotes. You’ll see I have the #2 spot. That wasn’t a mistake. I planned that and it worked out nicely.

My blog has been around awhile and has a bit of authority so I quickly rank for key phrases like that. But it’s only because I focused on making my site as SEO friendly as possible and doing the things I am mentioning here.

Receiving high quality links from related sites is so crucial to SEO. If fact it’s more impor-tant then having an SEO friendly site, having content or anything else. You can have a web-site entirely in Flash and still rank for keywords if you have enough links pointing to your site. It doesn’t work the other way around however. You can have a site with all the unique content in the world but with zero links your site will never be found. So you need links!

The best possible links you can get are from authority sites; sites that have been around a long time, get a lot of traffic, blogs that have a lot of readers etc. If you can create compel-ling enough content where other bloggers or site owners are willing to link to you then this is pure gold. But it’s also the hardest way to get links. That’s why I said if you have friends with sites that are willing to link to you it will be easier. If not then you have to work a bit to get backlinks. If you have your own site you can link from then you should. But try and receive only one link from any one domain. Don’t try and gain hundreds of links from one site. I know that’s difficult when you’re listed on someones blogroll. If you can, have your friend or partner link to you in a blog post instead.

The Good - Ways you should get links

Buying links (Buying up links from sites is grounds for penalization from Google. Best to •

steer clear.)

So that’s the short of it. Like I said I didn’t want this to be SEO heavy. There are plenty of great resources online about SEO and gaining backlinks that you can delve into later.

But SEO takes time right? Why yes, yes it does. If you want to start seeing almost instant results from your efforts though the only way to go is PPC and I’m talking specifically about Google Adwords.

Like I mentioned SEO takes time and is really for the long haul. If you want to immediately start testing to see how much money your site could make PPC is the key. You can literally have ads running across Google and Google’s ad network in as little as 10 minutes.

I want to warn you though. You can lose a lot of money with PPC if you don’t know what you’re doing. I sure have and no it’s not that fun.

But what you can do is start small. Budget $10 a day to test. The key here is to buy 500 targetted clicks to test. Run it over a few days and see how much you make. You should make more then you spend. You want to make money not lose it.

I can’t teach you everything there is to know about running successfull PPC campaigns here but I can give you some pointers. After all there are smarter PPC gurus out there like Perry Marshal that you should learn from.

1. Never budget more per day then you’re willing to spend! And double check your #’s. Ac-cidently typing in an extra zero can cost you a lot! I’ve done that once. Ouch!

2. Target your ads as much as you can. This is where you should use Exact Match keywords. In your keyword list use brackets [keyword]. This will ensure your ads only show up when people search for that exact phrase.

3. For testing only use Google search. Disable the Google Ad Network. You get a lot of curi-ous people from the ad network clicking ads that aren’t buyers.

4. Use negative keywords in your campaigns. Using -free will remove your ad from anyone searching for free templates.

5. Use keywords in your ad title. Remember you can create a number of ad variations per campaign so test, test, test! Also, when there are keywords in your ads they are bolded so they stand out more.

6. You don’t always have to bid the highest to get clicks. Yes the first slot gets clicks but also the 6th and 7th place as well. Don’t be determined to outbid everyone just to be in the #1 spot.

7. List benefits in your ads, not features. People buy benefits.

8. It’s better to presell your visitors. So send them to your own site where you can list all the benefits of purchasing from Envato. Include a video of you talking about your experi-ence. (This gets a bit into conversion tactics and is a whole other article)

9. Match your ad text to the text found on your landing page. Your message should be con-sistent throughout.

10. You should create separate ad campaigns for each keyword set. All portfolio theme keywords should be in one campaign with keywords about portfolio themes used in the ads. Don’t create generic ad campaigns for huge keyword lists. Run small super-optimized cam-paigns. The more optimized the better. You’ll see higher CTR’s and conversions when you run optimized campaigns. > Ok, moving on!

The entire method I describe above should cost you a minimum of $50 to get started. $30 for the wordpress theme, $10 for the domain and $10 for the hosting. Hosting will cost you $10 or so every month. This initial cost though will soon be paid off by all the commissions you’ll be receiving.

There is a reason why I prefer this method over getting everything for free. The main rea-son is because you actually own your site. If you choose to go with free blog hosting from blogger.com or wordpress.com, yes you save on hosting and domain fees, but you never own your site. They do. I prefer owning my work so I pay up front to do so. It always pays off. And I’m free to sell my sites in the future if I want to.

I know times are tough. The economy still sucks. So if you don’t have a choice you can cer-tainly use this same method on free hosting sites and even on social networking sites. The initial start up cost is $0, but again you’ll pay the price later on if you want to do something else with your site, like sell it.

Also with free blogger hosting sites like blogger.com you are really limited with what you can do. You certainly can’t install scripts like Shorty I talked about above. So free really turns out costing you more because having access to analytical info like how many times your links get clicked is important.

But yes, it’s totally possible to do this without any upfront fees. Which is rather attractive I know. But always think about the long term.

I won’t go into detail here about how to set up or where to find free blog hosting. I’m sure this isn’t something new.

Good question! Well, it does really matter on a few things. How much work you actually put into this will determine your success. Like all things of course.

I’m sure you are wondering how much I make from promoting products from Envato’s mar-ketplace right? Well, I’m actually new to their referral program. I joined in April (2009) so just over a month or so now. Here’s the screenshot from my account:

So you might be saying to yourself... that’s not a lot. Well, Envato is actually only one of the many programs I am promoting.

I actually made a total of $1.158.52 in May alone from the themes/templates I am promot-ing.

I’m posting a screenshot on page 20 (figure 2) of my Paypal account for May showing the payments I received.

I’m doing this so to show I am making a decent amount of extra income using the method I’ve described here.

Using a Magazine WP Theme

Instead of using a showcase wordpress theme you can also use a magazine style wordpress theme for this. Think Psdtuts.com or Nettutts.com. If you can write more on the topic of themes or templates (or you can find someone who can) then you can build a highly traf-ficked blog this way. I bookmarked a few magazine themes at Themeforest that are perfect for this. They’re all attractive and include spots for advertising.

Product Promotion via Video Sharing Sites

You’ll notice in my bookmark collection that I included a few video backgrounds and sound files. You can use these to produce promotional videos for any product. By simply includ-ing screenshots of the templates in a promotional piece you can drive traffic back to your site or directly to Envato’s sites. Now that Youtube has surpassed Yahoo as the second most popular searched site this can be a great way to increase visibility and ultimately drive traffic. If you’re not familiar with video editing software or audio editing software you can create stylish videos using Animoto. Animoto makes it super easy to produce graphic driven videos that you can then upload to Youtube or any other video sharing site. If you want to upload your video to multiple sites at once try Tubemogul.com - It’s free and works great.
