Outram School Newsletter Volume 3 Number 3 – 10 August 2017 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa It is coming to the end of Week 3 and the school is certainly full of industrious activity with preparation for upcoming school events well under way. The Outram School Speech night is set for Tuesday 22 August with both senior and junior students busy preparing their presentations. Our junior children will present their poems in class and to the junior learning team next week. Our senior classes will also be busy with speech presentations over the coming week. Speech night is a highlight of the school calendar. This year’s theme is to ‘entertain’ and I am sure we will be well entertained on the night. Further details for speech night will be sent home next week once we have selected those presenting poems and speeches from each class. Another major activity for the term is Stars on Stage. Our Year 6 to Year 8 students are now well into preparation and rehearsal. We are basing this year’s Stars on Stage performance on the book ’12 Huia Birdswhich delivers a strong message around conservation and the protection of our native species. We have our music set, costumes are underway and the students in Room 6 and 5 are leaning their individual and group parts of the performance. As soon as we know which night we are performing on, we will send home details of times and organisation for the event and ticketing information. Room 7 has also been incredibly busy preparing for a performance, with the 2017 Ukulele Jam next Wednesday. There has been a real ‘buzz’ and sense of excitement in Room 7 as the class have learnt the songs and tunes for Wednesday. I am sure all will have an amazing time and enjoy the opportunity to join other schools for a mass ukulele session. Also next week, we have four teams of students competing in the 2017 O’Mathlon competition on Tuesday and our ‘Robobot’ team competing in the EPRO8 Challenge Otago Final on Wednesday. Good luck to both teams. To close next week, we have a large team of students representing Outram at the 2017 Sth Taieri Schools’ Cross Country. This event will be held at the West Taieri Rugby Club Grounds with races starting at 12.10 pm. Good luck to all our runners. Parents, and extended family members, are invited to attend in support of individual runners and the school team. See you there. Room 3 Cross Country Stories

I came second in the cross country. I felt a wee bit nervous. It was hard work running in the mud. Written by Jaxson. Wow! It was the cross country. I felt nervous. I walked to the start line. Mr Marshall said “Ready, steady, go!” I started jogging. I didn’t get the stitch. I was tired once I reached the finish line. Written by Alex.

On Friday we went to the cross country. Yay! I got first place. Mrs Bellamy gave me a high five when I was at the cross country. I was a bit nervous but I won! Written by Charlotte. On Friday we had the cross country. My mum, dad and my Uncle came too. I was excited to run the cross country. Year One boys went first then the Year One girls ran then everyone got to run. We ran very fast. Mr Marshall had a massive red clapper. It was like how a crocodile snaps! It was loud. We all started to run. When we started to run I was in the lead then somebody passed me. Then I passed them. It was very hard to beat the person in front. Written by Matua. In the holidays there was a huge flood. There was a big puddle in front of our house. The paddocks were flooded in front of our house too. We went over the highway and the water was up to the railway bridge and the power was off. The trees were not under the water yet. After that we went home for lunch. I felt safe. The next day the trees were not too far from being under the water. I saw some bulls on the floodbank. The water was rising. Our car nearly fell in the water. I felt a little bit scared. My Dad was waiting for us to get home. Before we got home I saw some cattle in the water at the railway bridge. When I got home I wasn’t scared anymore because I was inside. Wow! Outside was too wet to go and play. By Oakley in Room 3

SCHOOL NOTICES

Daffodil Competition – Spring Flower Show Well hopefully everyone’s daffodils are growing well. There has been no lack of water over the last couple of months, so by now they all should be starting to pop up. Remember though do not let them dry out too much. A reminder that they all should be planted in a pot and on the Thursday 14 September bring them into school with your name, school year and age on the pot, if you are taping your name on make sure it is securely taped to the pot. I will then take them around to the flower show. The actual Flower Show is on Friday 15 September from 2pm- 6pm so make sure you go around and have a look. I would think you could collect your daffodil up from the show around 6pm if you are wanting to keep it and plant it in your garden, remember these multiply very easily and next year you should have more to brighten up your garden. Your support is very much appreciated. Kindly sponsored by Donna Tisdall – Southern Wide Real Estate & Maungatua Church Flower Show

Why reward children with tooth decay? Snacking often on sugary foods and drinks can lead to tooth decay. Don’t be part of the problem – be part of the solution to better oral health. Choose an age-appropriate alternative reward such as:

Toothbrush

Magnets

Stickers

Bookmarks

Certificates

Colouring pages/activity sheets

Temporary tattoos

Pencils, erasers, mini note pads

Ink stamps

Coloured chalk

Balloons

A plant or seeds and a pot for growing them in Or best of all – reward them with your time - play a game or do an activity together. You can now enrol your child/ren or adolescents online for their free dental care!
