Outram School Newsletter Volume 1 Number 8 – 24 March 2016 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for
excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential
Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa. At this week’s Tuesday morning assembly, Mrs Wright presented ‘After the Storm’ to exemplify our school value of Cooperation and Teamwork. The presentation highlighted all the work undertaken by a large number of students in helping Richard clean up the school grounds following the damage caused by the high winds a few weeks back. I followed up by saying that the response the students gave was exactly the sort of response we see in our school community when it is required. This community spirit was again exemplified last weekend with all the help and support offered to the Aitken family after their house fire on Saturday. What our students do is what they see modelled! All the best to Andrew, Sonya, Finn, Mya and Billy; our thoughts and support are with you all. A swimming theme to continue our Week 8 newsletter… Firstly, an acknowledgement and thank you to Donna Millar, who over the last two weeks has provided a small group, in-pool swimming instruction to our junior students. All our Year 1 and 2 children have received a minimum of five lessons with Donna and have benefitted from having the attention that only a small group can provide. This is an important addition to our class swimming programmes and is made possible through the financial support of the Friends of Outram School. We are grateful for this support. On Wednesday, we held the Senior Inter-House Swimming Sports. It was a non-stop, full programme, involving all four swimming stokes over different distances. It was great to see just how strongly students participated in the sports, with a significant number opting to swim in the more challenging 50 metres events. Added to the serious stroke events were our kickboard, underwater and walking races and I appreciated the fact our ‘gun’ swimmers were keen to ‘fly their house flag’ and join in the fun. The open individual medley and two house relays were a good way to close the sport and were both a showcase of swimming skill and inter-house competitive spirit. Congratulations to all swimmers; it was great to get a phone call from a spectating grandmother, who rang to let us know how impressed she was with student behaviour. Thank you to Matt Sutton and Katrina Gale, who judged places for each race and thank you to all members of the senior team staff, who all took a role in making the swim event a success.
Nga mihi ki a koe e hoa.

Happy Easter
A number of significant events are happening next week; Week 9, a short but very busy week.
Wednesday is the first day back after the Easter break; a reminder that Tuesday is included in
the Easter break for schools.
On Wednesday we have Room 10 heading away to Waikouaiti for a three day, two night
camp. I am looking forward to sharing the Huriawa Peninsula walk with the Year 4 crew on
Wednesday and wish them all a wonderful first school camp experience.
Our success at last week’s Otago Primary Schools’ Triathlon means we have ten students
competing at the Otago Triathlon Championships at Cromwell on Thursday. I am looking
forward to seeing our students compete in this expanded, elite event. Good luck to all.
On Thursday, we also have our Year 7 and 8 students undertaking their first CAPES Plus
Adventure Pathway activity for the year, with geocaching at Waihola. A new experience for
most that I am sure will offer challenge, enjoyment and a sense of achievement.
Our week will conclude with our Room 9 Year 3s taking on the challenge of the Millennium Walk, as part of their study of Turangawaewae. We know this end of te awa o Taieri well; the experience of following it to the sea will be treasured. With such a short, busy week we will skip next week’s newsletter. I look forward to reporting on all this activity in Week 10. Nga mihi nui
