Contents IntroductionEvery stage of life has its challenges. How often we have found ourselves facing a future quite different to what we imagined; but we‘ve taken things in our stride and made the most of it.

Getting older is simply another challenge.

We may not be able to do all that we used to do, we may not be quite as deft or mobile as we were, but the good thing is we’re not alone and we’re not the first to experience changes like these. Things may become difficult but there is lots of help around.

Our role at Out & About is here to help you to find solutions that render the difficult achievable, make continued independence possible and life a little easier

In helping customers over the years , in on-going conversations with suppliers and keeping up with the latest developments, we have accumulated a wealth of experience and product knowledge.

We’ve used our knowledge and experience to put this catalogue together; in many areas we provide simple guides that are designed to make complex decisions easier whilst still giving you a wide range of choices

Our featured Selections are all products that have received positive customer feedback.

Selecting from the vast range of items available does not mean that those not selected are substandard, it’s simply that we cannot be familiar with everything out there. But we’re always looking and if our selections are not right for you then we’ll keep looking to find what you need.

So if you cannot find what you’re looking for or need more help, please:

Mobility ScootersWhen walking any distance becomes more difficult:if you are reliant on others:

• to get out and about, • to go shopping, • even to enjoy your garden;

if you would value more independence: then a scooter could be just the thing to make life easier.

Mobility scooters come in all shapes and sizes and whatever it is you want a scooter to help you do, there’s every chance that there will be one to suit you.

Our job is to help find the right scooter for you

You can come to our showroom to talk, look and try one out. But if you’re keen to start thinking and looking before you call or pay us a visit, we’ve put together a list of questions and answers to them which will help you to decide class of scooter (Mini, Midi or Maxi) would best suit you. And then for each class of scooter we’ve used our experience to select different models and makes which are well made, reliable and safe to use.

This gives you something of a head start in finding the right scooter for you but of course there are many more to choose from, virtually all of which we are able to supply, and we will help you until you find just what you are looking for.

Finding the right scooter for you

There are many different makes and sizes of Mobility Scooter available and it can be difficult to know how to begin choosing one that will be right for you.

So to help, we’ve put together a table of questions and answers to them.

Think about what you need a Scooter to do for you • Look across at the answers for each of the three

different classes of scooter • Find the class of Scooter that comes closest to

meeting your needs.

Once you’ve found the Class of Scooter that best suits You, click on either MINI, MIDI, or MAXI and you will be taken to a selection of scooters to choose from.

We’ve made these selections based on our experience of makes and models which from experience we know to be well made, reliable and safe to use and which our customers have enjoyed driving.

Contact or call us (01420 549481) • If you need any more help or information. • If you are interested in a scooter which is not in our selection. We can supply any make or

model of scooter.

Powered WheelchairsIf you can’t propel yourself or if you can only manage very short distances, a Powered Wheelchair can give you independence and a new lease on life.

And there are two basic styles of Powered Wheelchairs.

Electric Wheelchairs:

• These look like traditional wheelchairs.• They have rear-wheel drive with castors at the front • They can be suitable for both indoor and

outdoor usage• Some can be disassembled with relative ease,

folded and put in a boot to be transported Powerchairs:

These are fully motorised vehicles which range from:

• Standard ‘off-the-shelf’ indoor models to• Mid-sized indoor / outdoor models to • Large, sophisticated multifunctional units which are

often built to individual specifications and can cope with more challenging terrains

Finding the Right Power Chair for You

To help you choose which type Powerchair is best suited to your needs, we’ve put together some questions to help you.

Once you’ve chosen the right type, you can begin choose between different makes and models using the selections we have made on the pages that follow.

But remember, these are only selections and it’s quite possible that none of them will be the right one for you.

We have much more information that we can use to determine the chair for you and we are able to supply virtually all of the makes and models that are available in UK.

Contact or call us (01420 549481)

If you need any more help or information. If you are interested in a Powerchair which is not in our selection. We can supply any make or model of Powerchair.

Adding Power to a Manual Wheelchair

Detatchable Powerpacks:

• These can be attached to most Manual Wheelchairs when motorised help with pushing is needed.

• They can be detached when help is not needed or when the wheelchair chair is being transported, say, in the boot of a car.

• Powerpacks are usually attached to Attendant-propelled wheelchairs but User-control powerpacks are also available

Please Contact or Call us (01420 549481) for more information on Power Pack options

Outdoors most will cope well with moderately uneven and steep surfaces.

Most cope with more challenging outdoor conditions.

Indoors, you will need wide corridors and door openings and good space to manoeuvre.

Will you want to take your chair with you when you travel, for example, in the boot of a car?

Most disassemble or fold to fit in a standard car/hatchback.

Some can be folded to fit into a boot/hatchback.

Others have detachable seats and, using ramps, the drive unit can be driven into an estate/similar.

Others require a specialist vehicle to be transported.

Most will require a specialist vehicle to be transported.

Please note that if you will need to be transported in your chair, it will need to have been ‘Crash Tested’ to ensure your safety.

Manual WheelchairsWhen walking is becoming more difficult, whether at home or out and about, a wheelchair can make all the difference.

“Now I can go for lunch when I want and not have to eat in my room by myself.”

“We went to the gardens at Wisley. My son hired one of their wheelchairs and pushed me round. I was able to get to places I know I just couldn’t have made under my own steam: I was part of a group again, all chatting together; they weren’t having to wait for me to them catch up. So, I’m here to buy one of my own.”

There are two types of Manual Wheelchair each having its own benefits:

• Self-propelled: where you propel yourself and steer using your hands and arms to rotate the large rear wheels.

• Attendant-propelled: where another person pushes and steers the wheelchair leaving you to enjoy the ride.

Making the right choice

It is very important that you make the choice of wheelchair that is right for you – right for you now but also taking account of the future.

Using our experience of helping other customers to make the right choice for them, we’ve put together a few simple questions. Answering these will get you off to a good start in selecting the right type of wheelchair.

On separate pages, for Self-Propel and Attendant-Propel chairs, we have selected some examples of makes and models to give you a good idea of the range of options that are available.

But remember, these are only selections and it’s quite possible that none of them will be the right one for you. We have much more information that we can use to determine the chair for you and we are able to supply virtually all of the makes and models that are available in UK

Please Contact or Call us (01420 549481) should you need more information or advice.

So, begin by asking yourself the questions in the table and then consider some of the choices in our selection.

Walkers & RollatorsIf you’re not as firm on your feet as you used to be; if your balance can sometimes be a bit of a problem;if there is a limit to how far you can walk without needing a bit of a sit down, then a Walker (often called a Rollator) could be a real help.

Indoors or out they can give you greater confidence when moving about and help avoid the risk of falling.

All Rollators fold for easier storage or transportation; there are different folding mechanisms, some easier and more convenient than others, so trying before buying is always a wise approach.

Rollators are similar in size but they can vary considerably in weight – steel frames are much heavier than aluminium frames and there are also different grades of aluminium frame; weight is another good reason for trying before buying.

And most rollators have somewhere to carry stuff – personal belongings, light shopping or if they have a tray – something to eat or drink

• There are Rollators designed specifically for indoors.• There are simple Tri-walkers (three-wheeled)

which are manoeuvrable and offer ‘light’ support. • There are more robust Tri-Walkers with a

double wheel at the front for greater stability and which have the added benefit of a seat.

• And there is a whole range of Four Wheeled Walkers, all with seats, which are just as manoeuvrable as the Tri-walkers but offer a much higher level of stability and support.

In choosing what kind of walker is most suitable for you, think about how you need it to help you:

3 Will you want to use it indoors, out doors or both? 3 How much support do you need? 3 Will you need to sit down and take a break when

you’re out and about? 3 Where will you store it when you’re not using it? 3 How light will it have to be for you to lift it?

To illustrate the options available and to help you begin to choose, we’ve put together a selection based on what our customers have found worked for them.

CHAIRS ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY

Everybody likes a comfortable armchair.

But if the chair doesn’t ‘fit’ you, no matter how soft the fabric or what the style of cushions, you will never be really comfortable for anymore than the shortest time.

And the more time you spend in your chair, the more important it is that you’re spending it in a chair that fits you.

What do we mean by ‘fit’?

There are some key dimensions – matching your measurements – that your chair should have. Whether we measure you (and we measure all our chair customers) or whether you get a friend or family member to do it, these measurements are the key to your future comfort:

• The height of the seat – too low and your feet will get uncomfortable; too high and your thighs will feel the pressure

• The width of the seat – too tight and your hips will become uncomfortable; too wide and you’ll not get the support you should have

• The depth of the seat – too shallow and your bottom will feel the strain; too deep and your knees will never feel comfortable

• The height of the seat back – the right height to give you the support you need

• The height of the armrests – too low and you’ll find it difficult to sit straight; too high and your elbows and forearms will feel the pressure

Finding a chair that ‘fits’

There are three routes to go about finding a chair that fits you:

• Most chairs come in just the one size – but it’s quite possible that the one size could be just what you’re looking for. We can help with the looking

• Look for manufacturers who make the same style of chair in a range of different sizes (there are quite a few) and see whether amongst what they have to offer, is the one for you. Again - We can help with the looking

• Buy yourself a chair which is made to measure – Something of an indulgence? No! Think of it as an investment. You know you deserve it! Again, there are different options - We can help with the looking

Finding a chair that does what you want it to do

Ask yourself a few simple questions:

• Do I need any help getting out of a chair that fits?• Do I want to be able to recline the back?• Do I want to have my legs raised when I’m sitting?

If the answer to any one or all of these is ‘Yes’, then you should consider a ‘Riser/Recliner chair’ (see page 35).

If you simply want a comfortable chair of the right size then look at Fireside Chairs or Standard Armchairs (see page 40).

There are some more specialised chairs that have three motors . If you think that you need your chair to do more than we have described above,

please call us (01420 549481). We can discuss your requirements in more detail and provide you with the information you need.

Riser - Recliner Armchairs Riser Recliner Armchairs Chairs

Once you have decided that a Riser Recliner Armchair is right for you need to think in a little more detail about what you need your chair to do.What chairs are able to do depends on the number of motors they have.

The diagrams opposite illustrate the different positions that can be achieved by chairs with a single motor and those with two motors.

All Chairs Deliver A ‘Full Rise’

which enables you to get out of the chair with far greater ease than a traditional arm chair.

Single Motor Chairs

have only the one motor to drive the different moving parts, therefore no single part can move independently. Each part of the chair alters it’s position at the same time and in a predetermined fashion: as the leg rest rises, the angle of both the seat and the back also alter until the chair reaches its maximum adjustment or you release the button to stop all movement. Dual Motor Chairs

The two motors of these chairs enable the seat back and the footrest to be positioned independently, allowing you to find the position that best suits you and then make further adjustments if you so need.

The ‘Tilt in Space’ Option

Both Single and Dual Motor Chairs can come with a ‘Tilt in Space’ movement.

This feature has certain key advantages which make them the right choice for some users. Chairs with this movement:

• Are able to maintain the angle between the back and the seat ensuring that as you recline, your body is not ‘stretched’ uncomfortably.

• Enable you, should you so wish, to raise your feet above the level of your heart which is often a requirement for certain medical conditions.

THERE ARE MORE SPECIALISED CHAIRS AVAILABLE.

IF YOU THINK THAT YOU NEED YOUR CHAIR TO DO MORE THAN WE HAVE DESCRIBED ABOVE, PLEASE

CALL US (01420 549481).

WE CAN DISCUSS YOUR REQUIREMENTS IN MORE DETAIL AND PROVIDE YOU WITH THE INFORMATION

YOU NEED.

STAIRLIFTSStairlifts

“I didn’t want our dining room to become a bedroom and the downstairs loo a shower room. I’d lose my privacy and have hardly any space to entertain. My stairlift avoided all that – and the

grandchildren think it’s wonderful.”

Next to the kitchen, your Bedroom and your Bathroom are perhaps the most important rooms in your home and more often than not they will be upstairs.

When stairs start becoming difficult one solution is to move downstairs but this means a major change to your home and the way you live. A Stairlift avoids altering your home and helps keep things much as they are – you simply ride up stairs to your bedroom and your bathroom.

Although there are many different makes of lift, there are only two different types of lift, each suitable for a different style of staircase.

And the power they require is almost always provided by an existing 13 amp socket.

Straight Lifts:

Have a standard rail, cut to length, that simply follows the staircase up and down between floors.

Sometimes the rail needs a hinge at its foot which operates automatically to ensure that the rail, when not in use, does not obstruct any entrance or passageway.

Curved Lifts:

Have rails which are made to fit the shape of the staircase, travelling around corners and across half-landings. Some will also require a hinge to avoid obstructing entrances and passageways.

Getting the Right Stairlift for Your Home

We try to make the process as simple and trouble-free as possible:

• If you think a Stairlift might be the thing to help you, just Call Us – 01420 549481

• We will make an appointment come and visit you, conduct an initial survey of the staircase and taking the necessary measurements to enable us to cost any installation and take you through the standard options and the optional extras that you might want.

• We will get back to you, normally within 24/36 hrs, with a full proposal confirming plans, measurements, selected options and a price.

If you decide to proceed:

• for STRAIGHT LIFTS, we will give you an installation date – normally within a period of 7 days.

• for CURVED LIFTS, • we will make a appointment for a full pre-

installation survey – normally within a couple of days.

• Having confirmed the specifications with the factory and confirmed their date of manufacture, we will give you an installation date. This will normally be approximately within two weeks of the pre-installation survey

Ramps and Steps

If you have difficulty with:

• steps into and out of buildings• garden steps• thresholds

we can supply and if required, install all sorts of access solutions –

• from large modular wheelchair ramps to • the smallest threshold ramps • from single half steps to small flights of

shallow steps.

And if you need the greater security of hand rails and grab rails we can provide theses as well.

For difficult or larger installations we will

• survey the site• draw-up plans• provide written and costed proposals• Supply and install

Bath Lifts & CushionsBath Lifts

Bath lifts are used to lower and raise people in and out of their baths safely. All have side flaps which aid easy side transfer on to and off the bath lift. For greater ease, some models also offer optional swivel seating. Reclining or static back options are available depending on your preference. Suction cups keep the bath lift securely positioned in the base of the bath. All bath lifts will lower you to within 3 or 4” of the base of the bath. They all have simple waterproof remote hand controls which are battery operated (no dangerous power cables) and when not in use the remote should be taken out of the bathroom and put onto charge. For cleaning purposes, bath lifts can be broken down into

two easily manageable sections, the base and the back. They can be cared for by cleaning with a dilute solution of mild bleach. All have removable, washable seat and back covers. A Bathing cushion is an alternative to a bath lift. It also has an easy water proof hand control with a separate air compressor unit which inflates the cushion. The bathing cushion is light and very portable and also has suction caps which stick to the base of the bath. The bathing cushion is suited to someone with reasonable upper body stability as it does not offer back support whilst rising out of the bath. They offer a full recline although some air can be left in the back cushion for comfort.
