INSIDE
Are you aseagull or a pelican?
Christmas Day came with wonderful conditions for those who could break away to enjoy them. Check out the shots online at www.eppicsurf.com/ourwave and find past sessions too.
Unidentifi ed racing down a crisp cold one on Christmas day at Eddy's Jetty.Photo by Eddy Raposa
I sit at the beach and observe a seagull that catches a piece of trash blowing
in the wind. Before it can even check it over another
seagull snatches it away. As a group of other seagulls see this, it cre-
ates a frenzy that goes on and on. A bunch of birds squawking and fi ghting over something that is ab-solutely useless.
I watch a pelican swoop down with knowl-edge and grace to catch a fi sh. Calmly it eats its catch and then fl ies away.
Each pelican, although traveling in a pack, is fi shing on its own.
When have you seen two pelicans fi ght over the same catch?
The point of this? What can we learn as surfers from Mother
Nature and Her simple way of explaining life? As a surfer, use your own knowledge, respect
one another, and listen to the ocean.Learn to understand the ocean, her waves,
and how she works. But most of all, SURF YOUR OWN GAME.Some rules to help us all get along....• Do not surf only where it is crowded·• When surfi ng at Bolsa, a beach break with
plenty of waves, there are many spots up and down the beach to choose from. Do everyone a favor and S P R E A D O U T !
• Do not paddle for a wave just because you see the surfer next to you going for it.
• Do not purposely sit by a better surfer just because they are catching waves.
But if you are surfi ng near others keep these tips in mind…
• Sit outside, with the rest of the surfers, not slightly inside and in the way.
• If you paddle for a wave and miss it and there is a surfer next to you, give your neighbor the next wave, even though you are still on the inside.
• Longboarders...your window for catching a wave is huge and you can paddle out quicker on the small days. If you do NOT take advantage of it, shortboarders may respect you for it. Remember, there are plenty of waves for everyone.
• If you know how to get all the waves, give one up and make a friend, there is no need to hog.
As the sport and hobby of surfi ng continues to expand its population we MUST change our ways in order for the spirit of surfi ng to remain in tact and the sanity of a surfer to remain peaceful. Thanks for listening and trying to do your part, it is all we ask…
Signed,just a surfer
Hello Mark! You right! It is really quite special seeing the kids having fun surfing. Thanks for a chance to share our favorite shots. Ya, gotta love it when your kid’s doing better turns in middleschool - than the Dad and his many years in the water! Ivan enjoys surfing daily. Southside HB with all the kids! Rob

Thank you for sending us your GROMS photo. As a proud par-ent myself, I know how special it is to see your kids having fun at what they love to do. Our Wave wishes to extend the stoke for all parents by offering up this space and other space in the paper to show your kids surfi ng photos. Send in photos of your little grom for us to consider putting on the cover or as a short feature if you have a story to go with it. Send them to: [email protected]

Are you tired of the lack of respect or attitudes in the water? We are looking to open up the lines of communication with our local surf community. The attitude towards surfi ng and all that it represents towards all walks of life seems to be shifting. Something needs to be done to try and bring a sense of purity, honor and respect back to our local waters and the sport that we all so love and cherish. Got a gripe? Have a complaint? Got a question? Have a suggestion? Write to us via our website…www.ourwavenewspaper.com or respond on our myspace page blog at www.myspace.com/ourwave, or good old-fashioned snail mail…Our Wave Newspaper, 4181 E. Patero Way, Long Beach, CA 90815 Share your thoughts, your wishes, and/or your visions towards a better, more peaceful local surfi ng world.

Johnny DeRouenPhotos by Eddy Raposa
Wrtten by Mr. X
The story of Johnny DeRouen begins in the bayous of Louisiana, moves through the South Bay, and now lands
on the local beaches of North O.C. Johnny is cut from the wood of old growth forest and though a solid citizen, father and family man, there is a smoldering ember of true rebellion just below the surface. Johnny embodies the prankster surfer spirit and the fi erce loyalty to friends of a bygone era. Johnny’s surfi ng is also loyal to traditions of classic approach. A master at subtle positioning, Johnny’s surfi ng has nothing superfl uous about it. There is no attempt to make the wave to be some-thing it is not. Flow is apparent at all times with speed allowed rather than forced. Johnny also ex-hibits power moves, putting his 35 pound Foam & Glass round pintail fully on rail as he sets up for the speed run with a soul-arch bottom turn or hits the brakes with a full gouging cutback. Johnny loves to add personal touches to his solid approach with classic hand gestures, head bobs, parallel tube crouches and the occasional switchfoot.
Johnny’s fi rst home in California was the South Bay where he grew up surfi ng Hermosa and El Porto, as well as Palos Verde Cove and Haggerty’s. Johnny moved to Long Beach some years later and made his way to Seal Beach where his fi rst surf acquaintance was the legendary Mike Owens, “Wiggy”, with whom he remains fast friends today.
The art of trim is essential to surfi ng tra-ditional longboards well, ala Skip Frey, and John-ny is truly a master of the seemingly effortless, but largely elusive, endeavor. Johnny is easy to pick out of a crowd – he’s the guy getting the longest fastest waves and making it look gracefully easy through nuanced and fl awless trim surfi ng.

This Fall and Winter has been a memorable one if you are a local surfer. After a lack luster Summer, fi nally we were blessed with incredible conditions and a number of swells to suppress our hunger for some real size. The most memorable waves and conditions may have unfortunatly occurred at the same time as the California fi re storms, creating incredible wind swept barrels
and spectacular colored skies, especially at sunset. We were not able to take to many shots during that time as I was to busy surfi ng and Eddy was broken up. We are sure you have seen many photos from that time anyway but we did get many shots from the following swells that seemed to just keep coming every couple of weeks. Go to www.ourwavenewspaper and follow the link to our eppicsurf.com/ourwave website that has many shots from many of those days. Who knows, maybe you will fi nd an epic shot of you surfi ng that you had no idea was being taken.

Passing the Torch, Trevor Lucca Writen by Tony Alvarado
TThe art and sport of surfi ng has inherent in it the tradition of passing the torch, whereby the
groms become young men and begin to set their own course in the world of surfi ng.
Trevor, as part of the next wave, has recently been picked up by Harbour Surfboards of Seal Beach.
Harbour Team Captain, T.J. Ridings, has manned the helm of the team and taken Trevor un-der his wing as he manages the developing team.
Since the previous article on Trevor, some two or three years ago, he has started attending Wilson High School and is in the Distinguished Scholars Program.
Trevor is surfi ng his second year for Wilson’s competition team which is undefeated so far this season, including two victories over local rival, Los Alamitos High School.
Trevor was voted Most Valuable Surfer in his freshman year with consistent 1st and 2nd place fi nishes in both shortboard and longboard divi-sions. Recently, he put together a string of four 1st place fi nishes in a row, two shortboard and two longboard.
Trevor and his Wilson teammates, Joey Wangsness, and Code Watten led the team to a 2nd place Boy’s Longboard fi nish at the 2007 ISF League Championship at Oceanside last March.
As Trevor’s course of surfi ng progresses, he acknowledges and sends a thank you shout out to MD Surfboards and Katin Surf Shop for support along the way.
Trevor is stoked to be part of long-established surf icon, Harbour Surfboards and looks forward to a long and surf-fi lled relationship.
T.J. and Harbour have lots of plans in the works for the team, including a fi lm trip to Mexico. We are looking forward to seeing the footage.
