Mali korak za veliki događaj

Kada sam predložila Projekt fotografija Pogled na Zagreb iz vizure naših članica, nit vodilja je bila: pitanje kako nas vide i kako ga vidimo mi, sugrađanke našeg grada Zagreba?Krajem 2013. godine predložila sam ideju o projektu našoj Romani, sjedeći uz kavu i čaj u maloj kavani na Britanskom trgu. Nedugo zatim i Heather putem e-maila u kojem sam ju zamolila za mišljenje o predloženoj inicijativi i mogućem razvoju projekta. Romana i Heather su na moje oduševljenje prihvatile i podržale prijedlog, i tako je krenulo..... Na sastanku upravnog odbora do-nesena je odluka o početku projekta, a na jednom od naših redovnih sastanaka upoznala sam Mirnu, koja me je upoznala sa Nataliom, predsjednicom Međunarodnog kluba žena 2013/2014 IWC. I koja je sa velikim zanimanjem slušala o prijedlogu.Uz sve obaveze koje žene danas imaju jos  uvijek imamo vremena za maštanje i razmjenu pogle-da na život, svijet i umjetnost.Ponekad nas svakodnevica radnog dana tjera da jurimo kroz dan u kojem ne stignemo vidjeti one lijepe trenutke, vizure, i horizonte koji nas okružuju. To je ono što nas je potaknulo malo stati ( muškarci bi rekli na loptu) i pogledati oko sebe, vidjeti nešto što je svakodnevno ali i po nečem posebno.U Bogovićevoj na kolačima ponovno smo se našle, ali sada u četvercu, Romana, Mirna, Natalia i moja malenkost, kako bi dogovorile korake našeg projekta, uz dobar duh i viziju razvoja projekta, zajedno smo osmislile naslov projekta, a to je: NAŠ POGLED NA ZAGREB, natječaj za članice IWC/Međunarodnog kluba žena Zagreb.Ideja i razvoj projekta, nadam se da će povezati mnoge   IWC/Međunarodne klubove žena koji postoje u svijetu, ali i kulturu fotografija digitalnog doba u predstavljanju grada Zagreba i Re-publike Hrvatske, što znači da bi budućom sinergijom svih koji su podržali ovaj projekt, rezultat mogao biti veća suradnja u asocijaciji Otvorenih Vrata Međunarodnog kluba, kako bi naš grad mogao biti domaćin Izložbi fotografija nekim gradovima iz Europe i svijeta, a sve iz ženskog po-gleda na grad u kojem žive.

One Small Step for a Big Event

When I proposed the project Our View of Zagreb from the perspective of our members, the guid-ing principle was the question of how Zagreb looks to us and how we, as fellow citizens of Zagreb, see our city. In late 2013, I proposed the idea of our project to Romana while sitting with coffee and tea in a small cafe on British Square. Shortly after that, I contacted Heather via e-mail and asked for her opinion on the proposed initiative and the possible development of the project. Romana and Heather, to my delight, accepted and endorsed the proposal, and so it began. At the meeting of the Board the decision was made to start the project, and at one of our General Meetings, I met Mirna, who introduced me to Natalia, President of International Women’s Club from 2013-2014, who listened to the proposal with great interest. Alongside all of the obligations women have today, we still have time to imagine, to exchange views on life, the world, and art. Sometimes the pressures of everyday life makes us rush through the day, so we do not manage to see the beauti-ful moments, perspectives, and the horizons that surround us. This is what inspired us to pause and look around, to see something that is ordinary but also special in some way.On Bogovićeva, we again found ourselves meeting for cake, but now there were four of us – Ro-mana, Mirna, Natalia and myself – in order to agree on the steps of our project. In the good spirit and vision of the development of the project, together we devised the title of the project: Our View of Zagreb, a competition for the members of the IWCZ.I hope that the idea and development of the project will bring together many of the International Women’s Clubs that exist in the world, and also the culture of photography in the digital age in the presentation of Zagreb and Croatia, meaning that with the future synergy of all who have supported this project, the result could be even greater cooperation with the Open Door network of international women’s associations. In this way, our city could host exhibitions of photographs of some other European and international cities, all presenting women’s views of the cities in which they live.

Dvadeset godina Međunarodnog kluba žena, Zagreb 1994. – 2014.Govor preuzet sa proslave 20. godišnjice postojanja MKŽZ, dana 16. svibnja 2014. godineU ranim devedesetima bili smo mala grupa žena strankinja, koje su došle u Hrvatsku u jeku rata u regiji. Unatoč tom teškom razdoblju za nas, redovito bismo se družile te usput učile hrvatski jezik i lokalnu kulturu. U proljeće 1994. odlučile smo osnovati Međunarodni klub žena u Zagrebu kako bismo povećale našu društvenu i kulturnu grupu. Željele smo okupiti žene različitog nasljeđa i kultura na druženju jednom mjesečno i organizirati kulturne aktivnosti. Nas sedam napisalo je statut, oformilo ovu neprofitnu organizaciju i sve smo odmah pristale preuzeti dužnost u odboru. Tako je nastao naš prvi odbor.Željela bih se zahvaliti članicama koje su bile dio osnivačkog odbora, a više ne žive u Hrvatskoj: Marisol Mittnacht, Jean Neitzke, Anne Else Muhlberger, Helen Wright, Vera Dumančić i Marija Boissel.Jednako priznanje ide i sjajnim damama koje su nam se pridružile i podržavale nas od prvog dana, te svojim neumornim radom omogućile ovo veliko putovanje za sve nas: našoj najstarijioj članici Terezi Horvat, Oliveri Nohren, Maji Fuchs, Maji Heruc i Lili Mlinarec. Prvom sastanku u 1994. prisutstvovalo je 40 članica, a danas je taj broj narastao na više od 180. Uvijek naglašavam da ništa od ovoga ne bi bilo moguće bez naših prekrasnih hrvatskih dama u Klubu, koje su tako mnogo doprinijele našemu uspjehu i integraciji, te učinile naš boravak u Hrvatskoj vrlo ugodnim iskustvom. Ja uvijek kažem: bez naših hrvatskih prijatelja ovaj Klub ne bi postojao.Živeći u zemlji koja se oporavljala od rata, kao strankinjama, društvena odgovornost postala nam je važan dio svakodnevnog života. Humanitarni rad postao je našim drugim važnim za-datkom. Naš prvi Božićni sajam u prosincu 1994. godine u sobi od 400 četvornih metara na vrhu Amex zgrade bio je tako uspješan da je postao naš zaštitni znak, poznat u cijeloj zemlji. Isto tako organiziramo i mnoga druga, manja dobrotvorna događanja. Naš prvi prihod od dobrotvornog Božićnog sajma 1994. bio je 80.000 kuna. U posljednjih deset godina naš Božićni sajam je u pros-jeku ostvarivao prihod veći od 210.000 kuna. Od osnivanja Kluba sakupili smo i podijelili u do-brotvorne svrhe u Hrvatskoj više od četiri milijuna kuna. Međunarodni klub žena, Zagreb je ostvario svaki cilj o kojem smo sanjale kada smo ga osnivale.Pa, kao što vidite, kad se žene slože i čuda su moguća.

Twenty Years of International Women’s Club, Zagreb 1994 – 2014Adapted from a speech given at the twentieth anniversary celebration of IWCZ on May 16, 2014.In the early ‘90s, we were a small group of expatriate women who had arrived in Croatia in the midst of a war in the region. Despite this difficult period for us, we would meet on a regular basis to socialize while learning about the Croatian language and local culture. In the spring of 1994, we decided to form the IWC in Zagreb to enlarge our social and cultural group. We wanted to bring women of all backgrounds and culture together on a monthly basis to socialize and orga-nize cultural activities. Seven of us wrote up the statute, formed this non-profit organization and each of us immediately agreed to take up a position on the Board. That is how our first Board was formed.I would like to pay tribute to the six founding members who are no longer living in Croatia: Mari-sol Mittnacht, Jean Neitzke, Anne Else Muhlberger, Helen Wright, Vera Dumancicand Mary Boissel.Equal tribute also goes to the great ladies who joined and supported us from the first day and tirelessly worked to make this a great journey for us: our most senior member Mrs. Tereza Horvat, Olivera Nohren, Maja Fuchs, Maja Heruc and Lili Mlinarec. At the first meeting in 1994, we had 40 members attend, and today this number has grown to over 180 members.I always say none of this would be possible without our wonderful Croatian ladies in the Club who have contributed so much to our success and our integration and making our stay in Croa-tia the most enjoyable experience. I always say this: without our Croatian friends, this Club could not happen.As foreigners living in a country recovering from war, social responsibility became a vital part of our daily lives. Charity became the second important part of our goal. Our first Christmas Bazaar in December 1994, in a 400 square-meter room on top of the Amex building, was such a huge success that it became our charity trademark, famous throughout the country. We also organize many other smaller charity events. Our first Charity Christmas Bazaar revenue in 1994 was 80,000 kunas. In the last ten years, our Christmas Bazaar has averaged revenues of over 210,000 kunas. Since founding the Club, we have raised and dispersed over four million kunas in charity funds in Croatia.The IWC has fulfilled every goal we dreamed of when we founded it. So as you can see, when women’s minds come together, they can do wonders.

Izložba fotografija pod nazivom ‘Naš pogled na Zagreb’ predstavlja fotografije trideset i tri članice Međunarodnog kluba žena Zagreb, udruge koja okuplja žene istog interesa.. Velik broj članica je Zagreb privremeno učinio svojim domom. Sudjelovanjem ovih trideset i tri sudionice zastupljeno je čak dvadeset različitih zemalja što pokazuje kulturnu raznolikost udruge i predstavlja jedinst-ven uvid u Zagreb iz perspektive žena iz Hrvatske i inozemstva.Iako među sudionicama ima nekoliko vrsnih fotografkinja, većina njih koristi svoje foto aparate iz zabave, užitka ili jednostavno radi čuvanja uspomena. One koriste objektiv fotoaparata prvenst-veno kao majke, supruge, prijateljice, istraživačice, strankinje i sugrađanke motivirane I ne samo u potrazi za ljepotom ili umjetničkim izražajem, već i željom da dokumentiraju svoj život u Zagrebu. ‘Naš pogled na Zagreb’ nije samo dokumentiranje Zagreba kao takvog, već je i način prepozna-vanja detalja i vizura koje simboliziraju doživljaj života u ovom gradu. Stoga, iako su mnoge zna-menitosti Zagreba prisutne među odabranim fotografijama, pojavljuju se i neočekivane scene te svakodnevni detalji života u gradu Zagrebu , Na taj način fotografija nas podsjeća da osim svojih estetskih mogućnosti i načina komunikacije, ona priča priče, anegdote iz osobnog doživljaja tre-nutka. Svaka od ovih fotografija je puno više od našeg prvog dojma na prvi pogled, a unutar sebe sadrži i dublje značenje za autoricu fotografije. Sudionice izložbe ‘Naš pogled na Zagreb’ velikodušno su podijelile s nama nekoliko riječi o samim fotografijama ili o svojim dojmovima, i one su uključene u ovoj knjizi kako bismo saznali više o značenju pojedinih fotografija i njihovim autoricama. Ujedno, članice Međunarodnog kluba žena Zagreb pozivaju svakog tko će promatrati ove foto-grafije na razmišljanje o tome što uistinu čini Zagreb ili bilo koje drugo mjesto osobno vrijednim za život u njemu.

Our View of Zagreb Introduction

The exhibition Our View of Zagreb comprises the photographs of thirty-three members of the International Women’s Club Zagreb, an organization that provides a community for globally-minded women, many of whom are temporarily making Zagreb their home. These thirty-three participants alone represent twenty different countries, demonstrating the cultural diversity of IWCZ and providing a unique view of Zagreb from the perspective of women from both Croatia and abroad.Although there are a few professional photographers among the participants, most of them take out their cameras for amusement, enjoyment, or simply to record memories. They photograph as mothers, wives, friends, explorers, expatriates, and locals, motivated not only by beauty or artistic expression, but also by the desire to document their lives here. Our View of Zagreb is not just about depicting Zagreb itself, but also, and perhaps more impor-tantly, about capturing images that symbolize the experience of living in this city. Thus, while many of Zagreb’s iconic landmarks are present in the selected photographs, unexpected scenes and ordinary details also appear, reminding us that photography, apart from its aesthetic pos-sibilities, is also a means to communicate a story, an anecdote, or a personal moment. Each of these photographs is much more than it appears to be at first glance, holding within it deeper meaning for the photographer.The participants of Our View of Zagreb have generously shared a few explanatory words, includ-ed in this catalog so that we may learn more about the importance of each photograph for the woman behind the lens. At the same time, by sharing these photographs, the members of IWCZ also invite everyone who looks at them to reflect on what makes Zagreb, or any place, personally significant.

Ova je fotografija inspirirana mojim prvim licitarskim srcem, koje mi je darovala baka davne 1976., kad nam je došla u posjet - srce je bilo predivno dekorirano, urešeno malim zrcalom, i još ga i danas čuvam. Ta prekrasna srca sinonim su Zagreba, ona reflektiraju ljubav koja se ovdje može pronaći na mnogo načina: kao ljubav prema kulturi, narodu, umjetnosti i povijesti, ali i kao ljubav prema omiljenom gradskom ritualu - ispijanju kavica i druženju.

Zagreb, I Love YouI am a Croatian-born citizen who left Croatia at age seven to emigrate to Canada. I am now 49 and

returning to live in Croatia. This photograph was inspired by my first licitar, which was given to me by my grandmother in 1976 when she came to visit us in Canada. It was a beautifully decorated heart with a mirror in it, and I still have it and treasure it today. These beautiful hearts are synonymous with Zagreb

and reflect the love that can be found in so many ways in Zagreb: the love of the culture and people, art, and history; the love for coffee and socializing.

Soba s pogledom, EsplanadeKad mi je bilo 16 godina, provela sam s roditeljima jednu noć u hotelu Esplanade. Bio je to prekrasan, velik hotel i samoj sebi sam se zarekla da ću jednoga dana ponovno boraviti u njemu. Ispunila sam to obećanje 2005. i čekirala se u hotelu jedne kasne večeri u kolovozu. Room with a View, EsplanadeWhen I was 16, I spent one night at the Esplanade with my parents. It was a beautiful grand hotel, and I promised myself I would again stay there one day. In 2005, I kept that promise to myself and checked in

very late one August night. When I awoke the next morning, this was the magnificent view from my room. I was so mesmerized by the beauty of what I saw that I wanted to gaze out my window all day. I am

pleased to have captured some of that beauty in this photo for others to enjoy!

Radićeva ulicaNakon mnogih godina života u toplim podnebljima Kalifornije i Australije, Zagreb pokriven snijegom posebno me očarava. Radićeva je ulica iz koje potječu moja prva sjećanja na grad: moja je obitelj stanovala u jednoj od njezinih kuća i ja bih kao dijete često gledala kroz prozor, promatrajući reklamna svjetla na Trgu bana Jelačića. Velike reklame treperavog svjetla su me oduševljavale i uvijek bih iznova uzbuđeno uzvikivala: “Mama, gle svečanost!”. I danas volim hodati tom ulicom, posebno zimi, kad pod snijegom djeluje fantastično mirno i tiho; zrak tada bude čist i svjež, a moja stopala tonu u bijele, mekane pahuljice.

Radićeva StreetAfter many years of living in the warm climates of California and Australia, Zagreb covered with snow

has a special magic for me. Radićeva is a street from which I draw my first memories of the city. My family lived in one of the houses on this street and I, as a toddler, would look through the window to the city lights on Zagreb’s main square. The shiny and twinkling lights of the huge advertisement panels on Ban Jelačić square amazed me, and I would always scream, “Look, mommy, it’s a celebration!” I still love

walking up on this street, especially in winter, when the snow-covered street seems fantastically quiet, the air is pure and crisp, and my feet are sinking into the white, soft fluff.

Pogled u dvorišteSvaki put kad se vratim u Zagreb, najprije prošećem starim dijelom grada, Gričem. Šetnja drevnim ulicama me smiruje i odnosi od realnosti modernog života, globalizacije, elektronske pošte i iPhonea. the old streets calms me down and takes me away from the reality of the modern world, globalization, e-mails and iPhones. I always take every opportunity to peek into these magical courtyards that come

alive in my imagination, with sounds and colors of the bygone era. I take these wonderful memories with me on my round-the-world journeys, and they help me get through the long absences from Zagreb.

Juraj i zmaj, Radićeva ulicaGornji grad ima puno ‘fotogeničnih’ mjesta, a ja volim istraživati njegove kamenom opločene ulice i povijesne zgrade, pronalaziti muzeje, restorane ili male dućane koje još nisam uočila. Skulptura Sv. Jurja koji izražava poštovanje zmaju kojega je pobijedio izgleda veličanstveno iz gotov o svakoga kuta – i kad su u pozadini Kamenita vrata ili kafić, i kad je okružen tek šarenim cvijećem i prolaznicima.

St. George and the Slain Dragon, Radićeva StreetUpper Town has many photogenic places, and I love to explore the cobblestone streets and historic

buildings, and to find museums, restaurants or little shops that I have not noticed before. The sculpture of St. George paying respect to the slain dragon looks great from almost every angle – whether having

the Stone Gate in the background, or the cafe, or just the statue itself surrounded by colorful flowers and passersby.

Hrvatska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti (HAZU)Zagreb u proljeće prava je eksplozija boja! Grad sadi velike količine cvijeća i dobro se brine za svoje parkove i zelene površine. U šetnji Lenucijevom potkovom – nizom parkova, muzeja i veleposlanstava, sa Botaničkim vrtom i Hrvatskim narodnim kazalištem na kraju - nisam mogla odoljeti ovoj prelijepoj magnoliji u blizini HAZU-a.

Zrinjevac me mami svojim jedinstvenim ugođajem, toliko udaljen od gradske vreve iako je u srcu zagrebačkoga Donjega grada. Njegov oblik i održavane zelene površine u lijepom kontrastu sa šarenim cvijećem te zaštićene klasicističkim pročeljima zgrada u kojima su poznate kulturne institucije šire opuštajući, ali i živahni ugođaj. Promatrajući godinama taj središnji gradski park i slušajući priče o njemu - od onih gradskih, povijesnih do malih, intimnih i obiteljskih - imala sam prilike upiti mnoge ugodne trenutke tijekom svih godišnjih doba. Razveseljuje me pupoljcima u svježoj travi i mirisom snijega koji se topi u proljeće;oduševljava me gustim sjenama platana i osvježavajućim kapljicama fontana ljeti; odnosi me putem sjećanja na tepihu od žutog lišća kroz magle jeseni i grije me svojom romantičnom ljepotom zimi, kada volim promatrati igru sniježnih pahulja kroz ornamentalnu ogradu od crnoga kovanog željeza na Glazbenom paviljonu podignutom 1891., koja pogled na park uokviruje poput fine, elegantne crne čipke.

the heart of downtown Zagreb. Its shape and space, protected by the classicist facades of familiar cultural institutions, as well as its well-kept green lawns accentuated by contrasting, colorful flowers, create a

relaxing yet invigorating ambiance.Over many years of observing its changes and listening to its stories, from urban history to family tales,

Zrinjevac has provided loads of enjoyable moments in my lifetime, through every season. It cheers me up with buds in its fresh grass and the scent of melting snow in the spring; it delights me with

the rich shades of its plane trees and the refreshing drops of its fountains in the summer; it takes me for a memory trip on a yellow leaf-carpet through the mists of autumn; and it warms me up with its romantic

beauty during wintertime, when I love to observe the play of snow through the black iron fence and ornaments of the Musical Pavilion (1891), which frame the view of the park like a delicate, elegant black lace.

LaubaI like going to exhibitions in the contemporary art gallery Lauba, housed in an old building, the exterior of which is painted all in black. I never really liked its surroundings, but one day, just as I was leaving the

gallery, I spotted a car passing by the cafe’s red umbrellas. The wheel rims were the same colour, creating a very special atmosphere! I had never before seen such red spinner rims, nor have I seen any since.

Izabrala sam je stoga što sam po dolasku u Zagreb bila iznenađena količinom grafita na zgradama po cijelom gradu; pretpostavljam da je razlog tome taj što u mojoj zemlji, Malti, nemamo takvih grafita. Što sam ih više primjećivala, to su mi se više sviđali te sam doista počela cijeniti talent umjetnika koji kreiraju te nevjerojatne slike.

I have chosen the theme “Graffiti in Zagreb” as my contribution to the IWCZ project. I have chosen this theme because when I arrived in Zagreb, I was struck by the amount of graffiti on the buildings around

the city. I suppose it struck me in this way because in my country, Malta, we do not have graffiti on the buildings. The more I noticed the graffiti, the more it has grown on me, and I have really come to

appreciate the talent of the artists who create these amazing pictures.

Živim u Zagrebu od studenoga 2010., kad je moj suprug postavljen za veleposlanika Rumunjske u Hrvatskoj. Kad smo stigli, naš je sin imao svega tri i pol mjeseca; sada su mu gotovo četiri godine i Zagreb je, praktički, njegov dom. Za mene je ovo lijepi, tihi, zeleni grad – dobro mjesto za odrastanje moje djece. Najzanimljivije mi je kako grad ‘živi’. Ulice, dućani, restorani i barovi, puni ljudi čak i prijepodne, ostavljaju dojam iznimne živosti, no, paradoksalno, bez obzira na to koliko dugo slušate tu ‘buku’, nikada je ne doživljavate kao dosadnu ili agresivnu. Naprotiv, uživate u njoj, postajući i sami dijelom ovoga grada.

World Through a WindowI have been living with my family in Zagreb since November 2010, when my husband was appointed as

the ambassador of Romania to Croatia. When we moved, our son was only three and a half months old. Now he is almost four years old, and for him, Zagreb is practically home. For me, it is a nice, quiet, green

city – a good place to raise my kid. The most interesting thing about Zagreb is the way this city “lives”. The streets, shops, restaurants and bars, full of people even in the first part of the day, give you the impression

of a noisy city. But paradoxically, no matter how much you listen to these “noises”, you will never feel them in a bothersome or aggressive way. On the contrary, you’ll enjoy; you’ll become part of the city.

Place of Remembrance - MirogojThe tradition of burial is considered an art at the intersection of sculpture, architecture and religion. Every

denomination has its own basic culturological approach to the burial ritual, which is based on three principles: to remove, neutralise and honour the dead. Not long ago, by the end of the 20th century, the

second dimension of burial declared itself as a necessity: the culture of remembrance versus forgetfulness. The Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb possesses that dimension. The German Military Cemetery at Mirogoj is

a mnemonic institution of a cultural memory... “The graves of soldiers are great preachers of peace”, said Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Prize laureate (quoted from the site). Such a multidimensional context is

an everyday reminder for securing the mental health of the nation...

Svako  ime ovdje sudionik je predstave bez kraja, predstave pod nazivom Povijest ... Mirogoj in the SnowI find Zagreb to be a really photogenic city. I am a very keen photographer and take a camera with me wherever I go. In this photograph, I really like the image of the statue carrying the heavy burden of the

snow. As for the roofs, I was really struck by the contrasting colours.

Shades of OrangeYou can’t say that you have experienced the spirit of Zagreb and the Croatian people if you have not

been to Gornji Grad. It’s the nicest part of town for the greatest views of the city and charming bits of everything. Sundown is an amazing time to be there, when all the trees and buildings acquire many

shades of different colours with an amazing blue sky in the background. The contrast of colours is just awesome!

churches I have seen, not too large or overpowering, with lovely 18th-century medallions depicting the life of St. Catherine on the ceiling of the nave. A feast for the eyes and yet so peaceful.

MaksimirJednoga lijepog dana prije par godina, odlučila sam prošetati Maksimirom i zapanjila se ljepotom zlatnog lišća kraj bijeloga Paviljona jeke; tek sam se, nakon dugog sanjarenja o tome, bila doselila u Zagreb, pa mi je sve izgledalo čarobno. Budući da mi ovaj paviljon još uvijek izgleda kao iz kakve bajke, mislim da je ova slika odgovarajuća metafora mojih prvih nekoliko tjedana u Zagrebu.

MaksimirOn this lovely fall day a couple of years ago, I decided to take a walk around Maksimir and was struck

by the beauty of the rich golden leaves against the white Echo Pavilion. I had just moved to Zagreb after daydreaming about doing just that for several years, so everything felt especially magical. I think this

image is a fitting metaphor for those first few weeks, as the pavilion always reminds me of something out of a fairytale.
