IWCZ NEWSLETTER

2 | NOVEMBER 2019

The days are short and crispy, the temperatures really start to dip, the umbrellas become a regular feature in our do-I-have-everything-with-me checklist before leaving the house. And yet November in Zagreb is one of my favourite times of the year.

The chilly long nights are perfect

for cuddling up with a great book, the Autumn foliage is still displaying its spectacular colour range – Zagreb is an idyllic setting for a colourful seasonal photoshoot; Sljeme, Mak-simir, Ribnjak, and Zrinjevac have us spoiled -, and hot chocolate is back on the menu!

Not only that, but the weather and

chilly temperatures don’t seem to deter the city from buzzing with ac-tivity: Zagreb Night Run, Zagreb Film Festival, VinoCOM, countless exhibi-tions, Advent (among others) are all scheduled for this month.

As for IWCZ activities, we have a few interesting ones for this month, and we hope they are to your lik-ing. The Board is already working on events for the next couple of months, but we certainly are not the only ones keeping busy: the IWCZ Christmas Bazaar coordinators and their team of marvellous volunteers are hard at work preparing for our signature charity event, which is less than a month away!

If you have some free time and would like to help, please do reach out to the Christmas Bazaar coor-dinators.

I have volunteered to take the of-fi cial IWCZ photos at the Christmas Bazaar. I hope to see you all there!

NEBO Winter Collection Fashion Show

Croatian fashion house Nebo has been in existence since 1992 and has long since acquired numerous awards.

This Croatian fashion brand reaches out to the women of modern and timeless style who are not under the thumb of ever-changing trends.Nebo’s collection emphasizes a woman’s elegance and sensuality with an imperative in using premium fabric and exquisite crafts-manship.What is perhaps most striking about NEBO’s is

that these are basic pieces that are indispen-sable in every wardrobe, and with a little eff ort in styling they become very striking. And don’t forget, pieces from the NEBO fashion house collection are always ‘made to keep’, made to be stored and worn from season to season . And this is exactly what, in a time of fast fash-ion, we need trends the most.

At Nebo Fashion House, the policy is to make time-less clothes.

The Christmas Bazaar provides a unique opportunity for countries to introduce themselves to the local community through vibrant and informative tables.

The event comes alive with colour-ful national costumes, a vast array of international products, delicious fl avours and enticing scents, and a spectacular display of fl ags. For companies, schools and non-profi t organisations, it is an excellent means of promoting their goods and/or services, as the Bazaar is a

well-known and highly publicized event covered by mainstream media.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CHRISTMAS BAZAAR?1. Raise money to provide fi nan-

cial assistance to selected, registered charity organisa-tions in Croatia; and

2. Promote a greater apprecia-tion for diff erent cultures.

WHO IS INVOLVED?We, the members of the IWCZ, are

responsible for the planning, organ-ization and execution of the Bazaar. Our Bazaar Team, under the lead-ership of the Bazaar Coordinators and with the support of the IWCZ Board, is comprised of volunteers passionate about giving back to the local community. We are honoured to have as partners the international community, foreign embassies and their staff , local and foreign compa-nies, and the City of Zagreb.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT?

The embassies stationed in Zagreb play a very important role at our Christmas Bazaar: they organize their respective country tables, depending on sponsors, and donate all proceeds from their sales to the IWCZ. They also donate a wide vari-ety of wonderful items to be sold at the Bazaar, from books to clothes, wine, vouchers and prizes for our Christmas Bazaar tombola. The proceeds are then given to the IWCZ for the administration of funds.

The IWCZ is responsible for the plan-ning, organisation and execution of the event before and on the day of the event. This includes preparation of the venue, logistics, decorations, tombola, insurance, ticket sales, etc. All volunteers involved in the Bazaar work for free, without any fi nancial compensation.

There are many ways to contribute and our success over the last few years would not have been possible without the help of our members and their extended networks of family and friends. There are lots of things you can do to help – and have fun while helping a good cause!

LESS THAN A MONTH TO GO!THE IWCZ CHRISTMAS BAZAAR, OUR MAIN FUNDRAISING

EVENT, HAS BECOME THE LARGEST AND MOST VISIBLE

EVENT OF THE EXPAT AND DIPLOMATIC COMMUNITY IN

CROATIA.

Whatever you feel you can manage is very welcomed.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE MONEY RAISED?

All proceeds from the Bazaar are used to support registered charita-ble organisations all over Croatia!

The recipients of our financial support are carefully selected. Registered Croatian charities apply for funding for specific projects to meet the needs of the popula-tion they serve. The applications are assessed by the Club’s Charity Committee and the IWCZ Board before a determination is made on the allocation of funds.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED?1. Contact your embassyOff er to help with the preparation and presence at the Bazaar. If your country is not represented, you could always organize your country table with your friends and family. For information and help in knowing how to start, feel free to contact the Christmas Bazaar coordinators.

2. Second-hand donationsClothing – in good condition, washed and ironed are appreciated. Shoes are also accepted. Books and Toys – in good condition, not broken. These can be dropped off at the

IWCZ offi ce up until November 25th.

3. Promoting the eventThe offi cial requests for donations in English and in Croatian have been made available to all club members, we kindly ask you to circulate the info to your business contacts, colleagues, friends and acquaint-ances. Each year we rely on as many donations as possible so as to make the Christmas Bazaar a successful event and to be able to donate a considerable amount of money to the chosen benefi ciary which is raised through donations and the good cooperation and participation of all involved.

4. PrizesWe also ask Members to specifi cally assist with getting prizes for:

Tombola – Maja relies on as many donations as possible for the success of the tombola stall. Gift donations for tombola are to be under 400 kuna.

Raffl e – The raffl e has traditionally been the highest single earner at the Christmas Bazaar, this is due to the wonderful gifts our Members manage to get. We ask you once again to reach out to contacts and we look forward to seeing the raffl e prizes rolling in!The Bazaar leafl ets/posters/raffl e tickets will be at the General Meeting. We kindly ask everyone to take as many leafl ets and posters as possi-ble and hand them out, and display them in as many places as possible all over Zagreb. We also ask everyone to take a book of raffl e tickets, the tickets all need to be sold as soon as possible. For those who are unable to attend the November General

Meeting, please contact the Christ-mas Bazaar Coordinators in order to pick up leafl ets/posters/raffl e tick-ets. The success of the Christmas Bazaar depends on the generosity of our visitors, donors, sponsors and vendors. You can help by distribut-ing fl yers, selling raffl e tickets, and using your social media contacts to invite people to this event. So spread the word and tell your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues!

MALI ZMAJ:2019 IWCZ CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

BENEFICIARY

It started as a small project be-

tween a few friends in December

2009.

With the desire to entertain as

many children as possible, and

to help those who need it most,

their efforts quickly began to

reach a wider circle of people.

Mali Zmaj (Little Dragon in English) is a non-profi t and voluntary associ-ation that is not funded by neither the city or the state, and depends 100% on donations from private individuals and companies, as well as the results of tenders to which they apply for their programs and projects.

It focuses on improving the qual-ity of life for poor or indigent chil-dren. With their headquarters in Zagreb, they help poor families and children throughout Croatia for the past 10 years. Mali Zmaj has about 30 volunteers engaged on a monthly bases and 56 volunteers with volun-teer contracts for 2019. Mali Zmaj is currently helping 150 families, and around 350 children in total. Two

thirds of users live outside of Zagreb and receive aid by post.

Besides helping these families, Mali Zmaj is helping around 160 chil-dren that are either in foster care or safe houses.

Mali Zmaj is frequently organiz-ing special projects and activities: birthday presents for the children, weekly workshops and playdates

- sport and recreational activities, dance workshops, creative work-shops, music workshops for the youngest, reading sessions, small puppet theatre performances and similar activities -, as well as helping parents by organizing free psycho-logical and legal help if needed.

CURRENT CRISIS DUE TO FLOODING

Mali Zmaj headquarters, located in Zagreb, Našička 3, was fl ooded on the 23rd of September 2019, during a great storm. Their humanitarian aid storage, dance room and playroom were completely fl ooded. Children were evacuated, and volunteers went right ahead with water retain-ing, drying and moving things, disin-fecting and cleaning up the space.

In order to continue helping poor families and children, Mali Zmaj are asking for help in form of a fi nancial donation which would help them overcome their current crisis caused by fl oods, in order to restore their space and continue with their work as soon as possible.

BEHIND THE CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

CURTAINBy Viorica Matos

MEET JOHANNA AND SUARNA, I W C Z ’ S C H R I S T M A S B A Z A A R COORDINATORS SINCE 2014

The festive season is the perfect time of year to raise funds. With everyone in the Christmas spirit, gifts to be bought, and a sense of community at an all-time high, bazaars can be profi table fundraisers: they bring people, crafts, and food together as well as put local talent on display. In addition to raising money, bazaars provide visitors with an avenue to obtain a variety of diff erent holiday presents and supporting the local community.

Suarna Ramadanović and Johanna Parnis England have been running the IWCZ Christmas Bazaar together since 2014, a mere 2 to 3 years after joining the club. Those who know them can attest to the dynamic duo’s profi ciency. With Suarna’s background in Computer Science and Engineering and Johanna’s experience in managing international franchise operations for 20 years, it comes as no surprise that these two ladies have, year after year, handled the logistics of such a massive project that is the IWCZ Christmas Bazaar, with effi ciency and professionalism.

What made you decide to take over the mantle?

Johanna: Jane Hunter – a former member of the IWCZ – had managed the IWCZ Christmas Bazaar for 10 years, along with Karine Filipović. Feeling it was time to

“retire” from the role, she reached out to us and asked us if we were interested. We didn’t know each other beforehand.

Suarna: She called me one day to ask me if I was interested in organising the Christmas Bazaar. I was pretty new at the time. Jane then told me she had also asked another person who she knew well and believed we would work well together. Johanna and I then met at her home, over lunch, and the rest is history.

What is the hardest part of coordinating the Christ-mas Bazaar? Does it become easier over the years?

Johanna: The fi rst two years were the hardest. As time goes by, it becomes easier, but it is never easy. To comply with the challenging Croatian bureaucracy and be sure to have all the necessary permits and documen-tation, the process to prepare an IWCZ Christmas Bazaar begins the moment one ends: our fi rst step is to decide on a date and book the Velesajam.

We submit participation requests and must follow-up with each one, which is extremely time-consuming but very important.

Physically, it’s those 2 to 3 days before the Christmas Bazaar that are hard. It gets hectic; we need to get all the items transported, answer a million phone calls, sorting our any issues that arise.

Page 10: International Women’s Club Zagreb g November Edition ... · The IWCZ is responsible for the plan-ning, organisation and execution of the event before and on the day of the event

IWCZ NEWSLETTER

10 | NOVEMBER 2019

Suarna: The raffl e is also a challenging aspect of the Bazaar as the person in charge of it takes on a tremen-dous responsibility. This year we are so happy to have Barbara Lukac for the raffl e. We know she will be great.

Johanna: Prizes is where we struggle. This is where we rely a lot on the club to help: sell raffl e tickets and gather prizes. The Christmas Bazaar is the fruit of the club’s effort. The success of this fundraising event comes down to the generosity and contribution of our members.

What is the best part of organising the Bazaar?

Suarna: That’s easy: the actual day of the Bazaar!Johanna: Absolutely!Suarna: It is a lot of fun, albeit the nerves! We get to

see everything come together. The kid’s parade – the opening ceremony where children dressed in their coun-try’s traditional attires accompany the IWCZ President and the guests of honour to the podium, to open the Bazaar - is always a cute moment. Watching the crowds come in, everyone making their purchases and enjoying the food. You forget about the stress and challenges faced once you see how everybody is having a good time, and knowing that all this will subsequently help a charity association in need.

What’s your guilty pleasure during the Christmas Bazaar?

Suarna and Johanna: The food! We like to try as much of the food as we can!

There are members of the IWCZ who volunteer year and year at the Bazaar. Who are these unsung heroes?

It is challenging to name everybody who contributes and goes the extra mile for the Christmas Bazaar, amid the countless ladies who actively participate.

For example, we have Ana Marija Ruka-

vina, who does a phenomenal job with the wine corner, and she has a great team of ladies that help her out. The wine corner raises a large amount of money, reaching Top 5 every year.

Maja Heruc is responsible for the Tombola. It is a trendy table during the Bazaar. She runs it every year with friends and family. Then we have Renata Bačanek, who runs the book table very well every year, with her mother. Mirna Bodga Mažuran and her team are always at the ready, always willing to contribute also.

What is one thing about the Christmas Bazaar that you don’t think many people know?

Johanna: That they can get such unique items. Look at South Korean face masks, for example. They are so popular and aff ordable, but by 11 a.m. everything is gone!

Are you unsure as to what would constitute a good

raffl e or tombola prize? From a shop voucher to a

gift certifi cate from your hairdressers, a month-

long gym membership, the options are endless. You

can donate unused gifts, like soaps or beautiful

candles also. To donate the prizes for the raffl e and/

or tombola, please contact Suarna and Johanna

I would like to start this month’s charity report by say-ing a big thank you to our dear member Jasenka Bohaček Knežević, who hosted the October charity event.

We all had a wonderful time. Applause also goes to all wonderful bakers, chefs and all the volunteers who made this event ever so special.

Last month our members were also busy donating var-ious items. All that was delivered to the Otvoreni Ormar (The Open wardrobe), the place where people come and choose whatever they need, for free.

For the month of December, we are planing to be a ‘Santa Clause’ to the children from the safe houses. More information you will fi nd at the next Newsletter and December General meeting.

LICITAR HEARTBy Amina Nagaria

Licitar is not a city. This is the name of the person who makes sweet souvenirs - honey gingerbread hearts. Confectioners decorate them by hand, so each ginger-bread is unique. Licitar hearts are the most popular souvenirs among travellers who have visited Croatia.

In the original recipe, honey, fl our and seasoning are mixed to make a fragrant honey dough. Sometimes bakers add gypsum to the fl our, and the heart becomes hard, but inedible. Doors or walls are decorated with such a gingerbread, stored in a conspicuous place.

The gingerbreads themselves were invented in Ancient Egypt, from where honey plants came to Europe. The Germans brought them to Serbia and Croatia, where the idea with gingerbreads took root with bee-keepers: in the winter they sold candles, and in the summer - honey gingerbreads at fairs.

Today, even the shape of the gingerbread depends on the confectioner’s imagination: it can be a guitar, fl owers, houses or birds, decorated with characteristic patterns. But only the heart is the most correct shape.

To give someone a licitar heart is like declaring love instead of saying thousands of words. The larger the heart the bigger the love!

You gave a heart, but there a mirror in it. Why? So thatthe person to whom you gave the heart always knows

that it is YOU who lives in his/her heart.Earlier they confessed their love, and today they

express a feeling of gratitude, care or buy as a keepsake of a pleasant journey.

Happily thanks to our activity coordinator Ilda. I had an opportunity to “travel through the whole process from history, baking, making to decorating these lovely hearts and other shapes.”

And of course lots of laugh, fun and chitchat with lovely ladies from our club made this experience fabulous and unforgettable! Thanks ladies for your company! Loved it!

This workshop I recommend to all!

It was a pleasure to visit a well-tended Equestrian Centre which houses such beautiful creatures – its star studded horses! The location was “Etno Farm Mirnovec” in the vicinity of Samobor, on an autum-

nal day when everything seemed to burst with its beauty, as if nature had saved up all year for this grand fi nale!

Twenty-five of our IWCZ ladies car-pooled from west of Zagreb to enjoy the outdoor event that for most of us resulted in a love of horses, the open countryside and the immense pleasure and benefi ts that horse riding can bring.

“Mirnovec Etno Farm” off ers horse riding lessons for the pleasure rider as well as lessons to riders of competitive sporting events. Igor, our guide, comprehensively explained a horse’s temperament and the skill needed to handle the strength, loyalty and speed associ-ated with these elegant, well-bred and regal animals.

A couple of our brave members took a trial ride on the saddled back of a horse for the very fi rst time! I imagined that there must only be ‘the moment’, when riding a horse, free of any on-going narrative, unlike books, shows or the inter-net that we spend endless time

immersed in. A place and moment of freedom when we are much body as mind!

Admiration was expressed by our members for the wonderful location and attention to detail of the Equestrian Centre and the Mirnovec Etno Farm complex as a whole, including the excellently maintained horse stables, accom-modation for visitors and riders on extended visits, the round barn for exercising horses and an impres-sive vehicle that accommodates six horses and their six riders. It includes a lounge, kitchen, shower and bedrooms, when on the road for sporting competitions.

Additionally, the Equestrian Centre’s lovingly restored wooden ‘Turopolje’ houses, dismantled, brought and assembled on site, completed the project.

After a homely lunch served in one of these houses, we parted company, car-pooling our return to Zagreb, bringing an end to our perfect day!

COLOR ME GREENBy Laila Miletić-Vejzović

Jasenka Bohacek Knezevic graciously hosted Color me Green The Green Pencil charity event at her lovely home, on Tuesday the 29th of October.

Noteworthy mentioning is that the Green Pencil Char-ity is a Center that provides psychological and educa-tional support for teachers, students, and parents. Four enthusiastic and passionate ladies from the Green Pencil Charity in addition to sharing their charity’s mission and goals engaged our members in an exercise through which they gave us a glimpse in their workshops.

In spite of the gloomy, chilly and rainy Tuesday morn-ing, the spirits were high and the conversations were lively followed by a delicious brunch. Everyone had a wonderful time and thrilled to be able to contribute by donations to this very important and noble charity. Lastly, join me again in thanking Jasenka for welcoming us into her beautiful home and for hosting this charity event.
