Fear Paralyzes

Elijah quits, Peter sinks, and the people of Gerasene fear a formerly-demon-possessed man in his now, right mind. When one examines fear in the scrip-tures, it usually has one of two sources: either God won’t act, or God will act. There have been countless times in my life when God hasn’t answered prayers the way I wanted them answered. (Probably because they were very self-centered prayers.) In hindsight, I am grateful that God answered those prayers differently. Just because we don’t get the answer we want doesn’t mean an answer wasn’t given. The other source of fear comes when God starts calling us out of our comfort zone. The Gerasenes knew how to deal with the demon-possessed man. They were not quite sure how to deal with the One who could restore life and peace to such a man. Martin Luther reminds us from the Small Catechism, in our Lord’s Prayer:

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful na-ture, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.

When faith squeezes fear out of its place, we find the freedom we have in Je-sus. While we may never know the future, we certainly know the one who does. Jesus sought to replace fear with faith, that we might trust in the place prepared, the very presence of Jesus, and the people of God in the commun-ion of saints. So we keep on praying, trusting in the one who has our best interests at heart. We boldly step out of bed each day, knowing that God has work for us to do, giving our lives purpose and meaning. Then one day, when faith is fulfilled in all its glory, fear itself will become paralyzed… by faith! Until that day, we serve together in Jesus name!

Gold Canyon Coordinating Committee

Attending: Janice Cunningham, Robert Cunningham, Leonard Schroeder, Mike Johnson, Suzy Cavoto

Staff: Pr. Bill Rindy, Pr. Tina Mills, Kim McCracken

Absent: Susan Drane, Karen Howard, Dave Reurink, Ron Rock, John Malmberg, Anita Pope

Janice Cunningham provided a devotion and Mike Johnson opened with a prayer.

New Business – Janice Cunningham is representing OSLC Gold Canyon campus at the Synod Assembly June 14th

and 15th.

Old Business – 3rd Annual Summer Celebration (June 29th) – Suzy and the Schroeders have the trivia questions

all ready; shopping for the prizes will be completed soon; Richard is available and will present “Name that

Tune”; Cunnighams are bringing the pizzas; the party is being advertised at both campuses; Mike has post

cards to be used to invite neighbors and friends; Robert is responsible for setting up the round tables.

High Season schedules will be discussed at the August meeting.

Pastor and Staff

Pr. Bill – A new banner is being considered to be placed over a large portion of the stucco sign at the south

entrance to the parking lot. It will fit below the “Our Saviors Lutheran Church Gold Canyon Campus”

and continue to the bottom of the sign. This will cover the incorrect email address. Mike will have

Ray’s Printing work up a proof and figure the cost. These will be forwarded to the Committee for e-

mail approval. This temporary banner will hopefully be replaced by an electronic sign. He met with

Frank this afternoon to do a walk thru of the parking lot at East Mesa. We are very close to knowing

the initial cost of this project. It looks like it will be pushing $600,000. We have saved at least

$270,000 with the variances granted by the County and the removal of the fines. We do finally have

our permit. A new Communication Coordinator has been hired. Rich will be in Gold Canyon from 9

am until noon Tuesday thru Friday.

Pr. Tina – The Phoenix Advocacy Center is requesting quilts. She forwarded the e-mail to Janice to see if

prayer shawls are appropriate. The chair of the Snack Pack program for school children has resigned.

Someone is needed to resume this program in the fall. There are many volunteers that are willing to

package and deliver thee food packs but no one is willing to do the shopping. Janice will get with Rich

to place an ad for a volunteer coordinator.

Kim McCracken – A written report has been submitted. The MOU for AA and SFCOA were presented

for review. A couple of corrections need to be made before they can be signed.

Ministry Chair Reports (only those with current activity are shown below)

Discipleship – will meet tomorrow.

Evangelism (Good News) – Mike Johnson reported that another lady is interested in membership.

Missions – Janice and Robert are delivering water for Heat Respite at Grace on Friday.

Property Team - Leonard and Robert met with Arizona Weed Control. The church has a contract with

them. The weeds need to be sprayed at a cost of $350.00. Approval was given to have this done. Leon-

ard will make the necessary arrangements. Pre-emergent will need to be applied this fall.

As there is very little business to be conducted this coming month, our next meeting will be held August 6th at 1:00 in

the Forum Room.

We adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer.
