Attention Parents of School-Age Children At the end of last school year, all school-age children were advanced one grade level in the membership database. If you have a child who did not advance a grade this fall, or a child who turned five years old after September 1 of last fall and did not enter kindergarten this fall, please notify Kathi in the office. Doing so will assure that your child receives the appropriate milestone mailing this school year.
“Attention All Bookkeepers!” OSL is looking for a part-time bookkeeper to monitor and
reconcile the church financial records. Anticipated time commitment per week is 10-12 hours with a flexible work schedule and extremely friendly work environment. Must have bookkeeping experience and familiar with payroll, along with Quick Books and Church Windows software systems. If you are interested, or know of a friend or family member that would be qualified and interested in applying, please e-mail your resume to Mark Kalscheur at [email protected], or call him at (715)556-6025 with any questions.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARIANS!
This announcement is for everyone in the congregation from the Children’s Library for your information and to ask for suggestions, which will help us set up our new library section. We are in the process of designating special shelf areas for books and materials that will augment the confirmation curriculum and provide insights for issues and questions being discussed by our tweens and teens. We hope to have books there that will be useful for students, parents, teachers, and shepherds. If you have worked with confirmation or teen discussion groups in the past and have suggestions about books/materials that were helpful, please let me know. As we gather materials, they will be placed on the north wall shelves in the Children’s Library room. We are hoping to have books on those shelves by the end of October.
For kids and parents: This is a gentle reminder to anyone who has checked out books from the Children’s Library to look around your home or car to see if any DVDs or books are hiding there that haven't been returned. They are very good at hiding in your bookcase and under furniture. Quite a few books are still out that were checked out last winter and spring. There are no fines, but it would be great to get them back so someone else can use them!
Sylvia Nelson, Children’s Librarian
From the Adult Library – The updating of the card catalog is progressing well. It’s a slow process, but coming along nicely. Many thanks to Our Savior’s Reading Club who authorized the purchase of about 20 new books, fiction and nonfiction, which should arrive in about two weeks. This time, as they are processed for placement on the shelf, the catalog cards will be printed and filed at the same time! First time in a long while that this has been accomplished.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION: The library is not a budget item in the OSL annual budget. Our funds currently are very low, and Sylvia and I would like to thank the Reading Club for their generous gifts. If you are thinking of donating to the church for a special occasion or in memoriam, why not designate it to go into the library funds? You could even specify adult or children’s library and it would be used to purchase either supplies or books. We have one of the best church libraries in the area; your donations help keep it that way. Thank you!
Bonnie Nelson, Adult Librarian

Stepping Stones of Dunn County for 52 pounds of grocery items placed in the food bins at OSL and delivered on September 9.
“Thank you so much for your recent gift to Stepping Stones of $600 for August and September ($300/month). We are
currently averaging about 1,300 visits per month at the food pantry. Pantry usage has more than doubled in the past few years,
as people are struggling to meet basic needs during these challenging times.”
“We are incredibly grateful for your generous donation of $300 to Luther Park’s Annual Fund. It is through your support that
Luther Park continues to be a vital ministry where youth and families can grow in their faith. The camp experience truly has a
lifelong impact.”
“American Lutheran Homes is truly grateful for your generous donation of $66.66. Your support assists our programs in
providing the best possible care to the people we serve.”
“Thank you for your recent gift of $666.67 to support the mission and ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
(ELCA). We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Your gift helps to train new leaders, opens
the doors of new congregations, and shares the gospel with others.”
“Thank you for your recent gift of $291.67 to ELCA Missionary Sponsorship. Your ongoing prayers and financial gift, together
with the hard work of the ELCA missionaries and our global companions, make a world of difference!”
“To Our Savior’s Church and all the wonderful staff~Thank you so much for being so supportive towards our ministry! God is
working in a big way and we are so blessed to have all your help, support, and space to host our group! Thank you with all our
hearts! In Him, G.I.F.T” (G.I.F.T. is a Bible study group meeting at Our Savior’s and stands for Girlfriends in Faith Together.)
“We count you among our dearest friends and among our most valued partners in ministry. Your support of the programs of
Lutheran Social Services touches the lives of friends, neighbors, co-workers, family members, and parishioners—nearly 100,000
people across Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Thank you for your gift of $208.33 and for including us in your ministry.”
It’s back to school time. Whether or not that means you, your children, or grandchildren, we can all relate—even if we have to think back to ‘times of yore.’ An apple for the teacher is great, but, these days, kids also need apples and, of course, other food! Did you know that over 40% of students in the Menomonie School District
are eligible for free or reduced-cost lunches? That means their family members are also very likely at risk of hunger. Right now, there’s a special opportunity to make your gift go even further. Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire, where Dunn County Stepping Stones gets much of the food it distributes, is offering to match every dollar we receive with a pound of food, up to 5,000 pounds. That’s the equivalent of at least five or six pallets (assuming a mix of canned goods and other items), and about as much as we receive in a month’s time from individuals, churches, and businesses that do food drives. Financial contributions received between August 30 and October 10 will be eligible for the match. We hope that you will help!
The heating season may leave some “out in the cold.” The Dunn County Energy Assistance Program will soon begin taking applications for the 2013-14 heating season. The program begins October 1, 2013, and runs through May 15, 2014.

Health Ministry
3rd
Annual FREE Health Day Coming…!
Saturday, October 12, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Menomonie Middle School
Providing free services AND opportunities to SERVE!
A FREE Health Day is once again being held to serve Menomonie area community members. Sponsored by nine local churches (Our Savior’s, Peace Lutheran, St. Joseph Catholic, Menomonie Alliance, United Methodist, Cedarbrook, and Oakridge Lutheran Brethren, Christ Lutheran, Unitarian), the event will provide services for those needing health services, especially those uninsured or underinsured.
Services to be provided: physician exams, dental exams/care, eye exams, hearing exams, blood pressure checks, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings, pharmacist medication consultations, flu shots, mental health screening, financial coaching, hair cuts, photos, and car oil change vouchers. In addition, a meal will be provided to all attendees. All services are being donated! Last year, over 20 OSL members volunteered their services for this event!
How can YOU help?
Helpers needed: registration, set-up Friday evening; advocate (see note below), child care. Sign-up
sheets are available on the Health Ministry bulletin board, in the Sunday bulletin, or contact Becky Kneer, Parish Nurse, at <[email protected]>.
One important volunteer role (with MANY needed) is that of ADVOCATE. This volunteer will “walk alongside” an individual,
couple, or family as they go through the process—being a good listener and helper. High school youth are also encouraged to be involved. (A family may have two or more advocates depending on the number of members).
If you know people who would appreciate/benefit from these free services, please share this information and encourage them
to attend. Better yet, offer to bring them!
I hope YOU will consider this opportunity to give AND receive!!
October Greetings! Along with fall comes the beginning of flu season. Each year, we are reminded of ways to prevent the spread of contagious illnesses, including good hand washing.
I remind you to personally do what you can to stay healthy …in doing so, you are being a good steward of your body and enhancing your work in God’s kingdom.

Strengthening Families: The Power of Financial Wellbeing
A message from Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan
As we as a country mark the five-year anniversary of the “Great Recession,” thoughts turn to the
health and well-being of our financial industry and the economy. Aspects of our financial system
are on the upswing, but many families across the country continue to struggle with financial
stressors. Even with as critical as financial stability is to our daily lives – and our futures – it’s
hard to know where to turn for trusted advice and counsel.
Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, in partnership with LSS of
Minnesota, continues to offer free, confidential financial counseling services throughout
Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. LSS offers appointments by phone 888-577-2227 or online at
www.conqueryourdebt.org (and in person services are available in far northern Wisconsin; call
the above number for details). This counseling is especially helpful to those seeing some distress
due to credit debt and who want to get debt free using a trusted, certified counseling service. LSS
financial counselors are all certified by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC).
LSS’s counselors stand ready to assist individuals and families meet their financial needs head on
and plan for a financially healthy future.
