Big Mama whose name was Emma Sue Miller McWhorter was born in Burda, Georgia ( just outside of Griffin, south of Atlanta). Big Mama and her husband James “Candy Jim” McWhorter migrated north to Chattanooga, TN where she proudly owned and operated restaurants. Big Mama along with her two youngest children then moved West to join her son Dargin who moved to Pasadena in 1956 to pursue a professional boxing career. In 1970, under Big Mama’s watchful eye and guidance, Dargin and his wife Anita opened the first Big Mama’s restaurant called “Big Mama’s Fish and BBQ” on Fair Oaks in Altadena. In the early 80’s they moved to Old Town Pasadena on Colorado Blvd where they remained until 1992 when they migrated to Las Vegas!

On September 20, 2002 Dargin’s children and family opened this fine Pasadena restaurant where we have been blessed to serve you. In 2010, Dargin and Anita closed the Las Vegas location and moved back home to California.
