The Mass The way we were
From the point of view of what we are celebrating, the Mass is the “same” in all ages and all places. But from the point of view of how it is celebrated, there never was for the whole Church - ever - one uniform way of doing it. Here is the earliest description of the Mass that we have. It comes from St. Justin, who was martyred in 165 A.D.: “And on that day which is called Sunday, all who live in the cities or in the country gather together in one place, and the memoirs of the apostles and the writings of the prophets are read as long as time permits. Then the reader con-cludes, and the president addresses us, admonishing and exhorting us to imitate the splendid things we have heard.” “Then we will stand and pray. When we have finished, bread, wine and water are brought up.The president offers prayers of thanksgiving, according to his ability, and the people give their assent by saying ‘Amen.’ Then there is a distribution and a partaking by everyone of the Eucharist, and to those who are absent a portion is brought by the deacons.” “And those who are well-to-do and willing give as they choose, and the collection is deposited with the president who aids orphans and widows, those who are in want because of sickness or some other reason, those in prison, and visiting strangers, and in a word, he takes care of all who are in need.”
ALTAR SERVERS There will be an Altar Server training on Sunday, June 10th at 1:30 (just after the Noon Mass). It will last about 1 1/2 hours. We would like to extend an invitation to any child or adult who is interested in joining our very special ministry. Qualification - you must have received your first communion. Please contact: Paula at (831) 920-2869
Consider being involved! We miss you and the gifts you have! Whether you are interested in serving, connecting with others, worshipping, giving, or growing spiritually, we offer many opportunities for adults of all ages, and youth, to choose from. This bulletin along with our website is the best source of information for those wanting to engage.
Our liturgical ministries utilize the talents and gifts that God has given our community to the fullest extent. Whether participation is through “behind the scenes” preparation and planning or through a public role of service within the Mass, parishioner contributions help our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries: EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS - along with the priest and on occasion, deacon, assist with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ to the assembly during Mass. Training is provided. Qualifications for the ministry include: • Must be a practicing Catholic and fully initiated (Baptized, Confirmed, and First Holy Communion) • Registered parishioner of St. Angela Merici • 16 years or older with a mature demeanor and a willingness to serve fellow parishioners • Attend scheduled training and ongoing formation opportunities
LECTORS/READERS - proclaim the Word of the Lord during Mass. Therefore, they must be comfortable with public speaking, and proficient with diction, enunciation, pronunciation, and projection. Training is provided along with ongoing faith formation opportunities.
GREETERS (Hospitality Ministers) - Following Christ’s example of welcoming all with open arms, our hospitality ministers open doors and warmly greet all that come to worship with us. Responsibilities may include (but not limited to): • Greeting and assisting parishioners • Passing baskets during the offertory • Guiding parishioners during Communion • Cleaning up the Church before the next Mass • Distributing handouts including the bulletin Interested individuals and families should be hospitable, have an ability to see the needs of others and respond to them, and be welcoming.
