GodBless,Sean

We have arrived at the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and have been singing “Prepare, Prepare the Way of the Lord” in our Opening Rite. We have hopefully, each been preparing for the coming of Jesus anew in our own hearts during this Christmas Season. This is always a challenge during this very busy season, and in some ways becomes an even bigger challenge the closer we come to Christmas. The following is taken from a reflection in Lost for Words.

All of us are getting ready for Christmas…as children we feel the slight tingle of fear, alongside the incredible wish to actually see Santa Claus coming down the chimney and leaving us all the things we have dreamed of and asked for. All our dreams are sweet, and every Christmas is special.

As adults, however, we may have a problem. The rush and the stress of getting ready for the feast, all of the effort that we make to try to ensure that our Christmas celebrations are perfect, may get in the way of the meaning of what we are celebrating. And even when we try to focus on its real meaning, we may find that we have heard all the Christmas stories in church so often that they have become a bit like a fairy tale. We hear of the census, the trip to Bethlehem, the “no room at the inn”, the stable, the angels and shepherds—all very familiar and rather comforting. Have we let them become just “traditional”, like Christmas pudding and mince pies?

Today’s Gospel actually brings us back to a harsh reality. Joseph is facing a moral dilemma. Mary is expecting a child, and Joseph knows it is not his. He does not want to expose Mary to the full wrath of the law, but he also does not feel he can continue with betrothal and marriage.

Joseph hears what God wants him to do when an angel speaks to him in a dream: ”Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife.” When he wakes up, Joseph does what the angel has commanded. He trusts God so much that all the other considerations are put aside. Joseph listens to God, and makes the right decision, even though it is a difficult one. His character and his faith come through very strongly here. He is compassionate—he does not condemn harshly. He has the moral courage to seek to do the right thing. He discerns the right path forward by listening to what God wants.

Christmas is a time of traditions, of excitement, of Santa Claus, chimneys, reindeer and presents. But this Christmas, let’s try to listen to the real story of Christmas more closely and take time to seek out God’s voice among the incessant chatter and hubbub of everyday life. Could we love more compassionately? Are we too quick to condemn? Are we really always seeking out what God wants and trying to bring about God’s will? Do we listen for the Lord’s voice, or is it drowned out by all our own wants and wishes? We need not be afraid. We are all called to God’s service. We all belong to God. . .

We are called to a different way, a way of life where listening to the voice of God is our priority—somewhere in the chaos of Christmas, let’s try to listen to the quiet voice of the truth of Christ’s birth and what it means for us.

2017 Offertory Envelopes Please notice the change!

The 2017 Sunday Offertory Envelopes have been mailed out to all parishioners who are not part of OLV’s eGiving program. Please note that there has been a change this year. We are now using a new envelope program through Our Sunday Visitor of Huntington, Indiana. With this new program you will begin receiving your envelopes bi-monthly, rather than once a year. Please know that your parishioner envelope number will remain the same. This new system will enable our office to better address necessary corrections, new parishioner start-up, and communication with our Parish database. Please make sure to look through the entire packet each month. As always, envelopes have not been printed for parishioners who are enrolled in OLV’s eGiving program.

Civic Concern Food Drive

The targeted items for the month of December are: hand

cream/ body lotion, band aides, lip balm, noodle or rice dishes, soups,

stews, and cereal. Remember that paper products can not be

purchased with the Bridge cards so kleenex boxes and toilet paper are always in demand. There is a designated bin by the stairwell leading to the Fr. Ernie Center for the items.

St. Christine’s Food Pantry Gang

Right now St. Christine’s has an abundance of peanut butter and jelly so for the month of December. We will be only collecting cans of tuna, chicken and/or salmon and cans of soup. Please help us to continue to feed the hungry.

Place all donated items in the designated bin near the stairwell leading to the Father Ernie Center. At the end of the month we will be delivering the items to St. Christine’s. Anyone wishing to help serve by dropping off donated items to St. Christine’s can contact OLV’s Christian Service Office to make arrangements. Thank you!

With the arrival of the first snowfall and more in the forecast, it is as the traditional holiday song states, “beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” Certainly, with decorations adorning our homes and the business places we frequent, wish lists drawn up, and parties and concerts to attend…it would seem on the outside that the season is in full swing and all is fine. But is it really? Does the outside match your inside reality? How are your Christmas plans going in the meeting place between your wishes and expectations and the presence of

God where Christmas is waiting to be born? In a season that is bigger than most of us can ever handle, Christ our Lord waits for us to turn to him and acquiesce to his gentle love. It may seem difficult to find because this love is first found in the quiet space of your deepest being where dreams and fears, worries and hope reside.

But as the angel told Mary at the Annunciation and the shepherds who kept watch at night in the fields that first Christmas, “Do not be afraid!” Advent is the time to go honestly before God in whatever way we can and let him touch all that waits to be healed, transformed, and celebrated.

Family life is filled with comings and goings, chaos and fun and everything in between. Children especially have lives filled with media and always seem to be plugged in one way or another. How to encourage then the whole family to enter into that space that is needed to encounter Jesus? We all know that one can best find God in quiet prayer even if it is for parents between chores, while driving to pick up your children from school or just before you lay your head down at night. Children and young people can be encouraged to develop quiet zones in their rooms either right after school or before going to bed at night. Begin with two minutes a day and challenge everyone to build upon that! Christmas isn’t something that automatically happens on December 25th as we all know. Lay the foundation now with gratitude for all that God has given and trust that Jesus came not just for those who lived so long ago but for you and me.

Perhaps, you can use this prayer as a reminder of your family intention to make Advent a time to keep your hearts open to Christ's love:

God of Love,Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love.Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent, as we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen. (www.loyolapress.com)

CLOW Will Be on Break Christmas and New Years Day So that our presenters can enjoy the upcoming holy days, we will take a two

week break from conducting the Children's Liturgy of the Word. CLOW will return on Sunday, January 8, for the Feast of the Epiphany! We hope all of our families find time on Christmas to relish the presence of Jesus in their lives and see his love in the eyes of those they celebrate it with!

CTND As you prepare for the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ, on Christmas, tune into the Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND) for programming focusing on the true meaning of Christmas. Since 1985, CTND has broadcast faith-filled programming that informs, educates, inspires, and entertains to homes throughout southeast Michigan. CTND became an affiliate of Boston-based CatholicTV Network in 2011. CTND is available to 900,000 homes throughout southeast Michigan. A complete schedule can be found on the Archdiocese of Detroit website and in The Michigan Catholic newspaper. For more information on CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.AOD.org.

OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society | Conference #437

In today’s Gospel, we hear that Jesus will be named Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” The mystery of the birth of Jesus is supremely a mystery of love. May each Christmas find us more and more like him: more humble, more

holy, more happy and more full of God. Know that with your support for our OLV St. Vincent de Paul Conference (either financial and/or with volunteering your time and talents), you are showing those who we help that God, through the birth of his son Emmanuel, loves them and through the Holy Spirit may they come to know that “God is with us.”

We invite you to join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 7:00 p.m., in the Martha Mary Room.

NEWS Greetings from Kindergarten

This Advent, kindergarteners participated in a classroom service project called “Quarters for Kindness.” For one week, instead of earning kindness coins for doing a kind action (something that ultimately is rewarded by a prize), children earned a “quarter for kindness” that was placed in a jar. Children were also encouraged to participate in this project at home and proudly brought in quarters from home for their earnings from kind actions. The funds collected by the end of the week were used to purchase fleece which the children then hand tied into scarves, with the help of parent volunteers. We even had some money left over to purchase and donate toy animals to children in need. This is part of a larger project our class is doing to collect toys for the less fortunate. The completed scarves, which are pictured below, were donated to St. Aloysius Parish in Detroit.

The children beamed for joy each time they earned a quarter and even took the opportunity to point out to me the kind actions of others so that their peers could earn a quarter, as well. It was truly joyful to see the children’s faces light up each time they earned a quarter. The children learned several valuable lessons through this project including the joy of helping others, the value of a dollar, and seeing good, and therefore God, in others. The children are very proud of their accomplishments and voiced that they hoped the scarves would help keep the less fortunate warm this winter. Throughout this project, I saw God in each and every one of these precious children as they displayed the goodness and love that came with their kind actions.

God’s blessings,Elizabeth Mach, Kindergarten Teacher

SAY...HOW ABOUT A GIFT FOR YOURSELF? Some personal time to reflect and share a sadness, worry or concern that is bothering you can be a healing gift. OLV has trained STEPHEN MINISTERS who know and understand the gift of giving. They don’t come with a large Santa Claus bag ready to give you an instant solution. They do offer one-on-one

time to care, to listen, to pray with and for you. Our success rate is very good!

Discovering Your Gifts Charism Workshop Invited † Empowered † Sent Forth

Have you ever wondered… • How can I live a fulfilled and joy-filled life? • Am I living to my fullest potential? • What is God’s plan for me and how do I know that I am on the right path?

Attend OLV’s Discovering Your Gifts workshop to explore the answers to these questions and more!

Join us Wednesday evenings for this 5-week session: January 18, and 25, February 1, 8, and 15, 7:00–9:00 p.m.

We will uncover how God has uniquely gifted you to live out your call to holiness, find happiness, lead a fulfilling life, and go deeper in your relationship with Jesus. During the sessions, you will learn how both your spiritual gifts given in baptism (charisms) and natural talents are discerned, activated and exercised through ministry, career, volunteer opportunities, and relationships with others. We will also delve into learning how to pray deeply to be able to discern wisely.
