PANCHO CLAUS

Lalo Guerrero’s

Page 2: Pancho Claus

About the author and the storyLalo Guerrero a.k.a. “the father of

Chicano music” was born on Christmas Eve of 1916. He recorded over 700 songs during his industrious career. Some of his most popular songs were parodies including "Elvis Perez," "Tacos For Two" (to the tune of "Cocktails For Two"), and "There's No Tortillas" (to the tune of "O Sole Mio").“Pancho Claus” is perhaps his best known parody and is based on Clemente Moore’s famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” In this Spanglished spiced parody, Santa’s Mexican cousin helps him deliver presents to children in southern parts of the United States.

Orale, let’s begin.

Page 4: Pancho Claus

Twas the night before Christmas

and all through the casa, Not a creature was

stirring-

Page 5: Pancho Claus

¡Caramba! ¿Qué pasa?

Page 6: Pancho Claus

Los niños were tucked away in their camas,

Some in long underwear, some in pijamas,

Page 7: Pancho Claus

They’d hung up their stockings with mucho cuidado. In hopes that old Santa would feel obligado, to bring all children-both buenos and malos- a nice batch of dulces and other regalos.

Outside in the yard there arose such a grito

That I jumped to my feet like a frightened cabrito.

Page 9: Pancho Claus

I ran to the window

and looked out

afuera,

And who in the

world

do you think quien

era?

Page 10: Pancho Claus

Saint Nick in a sleigh and a big red sombrero,

Came dashing along like a crazy bombero.

And pulling his sleigh instead of venados

Were eight little burros approaching volados.

Page 11: Pancho Claus

I watched as they came and this quaint little hombre,

Was shouting and whistling and calling by nombre:

Ay Pancho,

Ay Pepe,

Page 12: Pancho Claus

Ay Cuco,

Ay Beto,

Page 13: Pancho Claus

Ay Chato, Ay Chopo,

Page 14: Pancho Claus

Maruco,

y Nieto!

Page 15: Pancho Claus

Then standing bien alto, with his hands on his

pecho, He flew to the top of our

very own techo!

Page 16: Pancho Claus

And with his round little belly like a bowl of jalea, He struggled to

squeeze down our old chiminea,

Page 17: Pancho Claus

And with soot smeared all over hisred suit de gala, he filled all the stockings with lovely regalos-

(For none of the ninos had been very malos.)

Page 18: Pancho Claus

Then chuckling aloud,

seeming contento,

He turned like a flash

and was gone like the

viento.

Page 19: Pancho Claus

And I heard him exclaim, and

this is verdad,

Page 20: Pancho Claus

Merry Christmas to all, and Feliz Navidad!
