A Message from Fr. Jake…

It is definitely an exciting time as we open back up for public Masses. It was a joy to celebrate Mass with 70 parishioners on Monday morning for our first public Mass since March 16th. Our parish was also blessed to have Father James Flattery join us for Mass Monday morning, and he stayed here at the parish a few days this week. Fr. James was gracious enough to help me out this week, and he did a great job! I know that he will be an excellent addition to Divine Mercy Parish in Burlington. Please continue to hold him and his ministry in your prayers. It is also important to recognize the patience and support of those who attended Mass this week. It was greatly appreciated. We were making some adjustments as we moved though the week, so it is my hope that everything will go as smooth as possible this weekend. There has been a lot of work that has been done over the last month to help in our public celebration of liturgies. In my letter to the parish last week, I outlined the significant actions that are being taken by the parish. I am sure that we will have to make modifications to what we are doing along the way, so we will continue to communicate any changes that will have to be made to our liturgies. Even if these do not go smoothly this weekend, we will get better! Fr. Scott Foley, OLV's new parochial vicar, has already moved into the rectory. Therefore, you may see him around the campus. His picture was in the lastest issue of the Victory Voice. Fr. Scott moved into the rectory early, so the domino effect could take place with other priests who need to move into different rectories as they begin their new assignments on July 1st. Please make sure to welcome him when you get a chance. Fr. Scott and I will be concelebrating all of the Masses on July 11th and 12th, so you will be able to see him that weekend. Fr. Scott will also be celebrating the Mass on COZI TV that weekend, so those who are not able to attend in person will get a chance to see him on-line. This coming week, will mark the beginning of a new fiscal year. On July 1st we will begin to implement the 2020-2021 budget that I outlined in the last Victory Voice. I believe that our parish will end this current fiscal year on a high note. You, our parishioners, have been extremely generous to the parish and many other people and organizations over the last fifteen weeks, so again, I believe that the fiscal year will end well. Please stay tuned for a full summary of the 2019-2020 fiscal year in the upcoming Fall Victory Voice. If anyone has any questions about the parish finances, please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the Finance Council. I want to end my column this week by taking this opportunity to thank the entire parish for your generous support of the parish, especially during the last 15 weeks of the shutdown. As I mentioned above, you have been extremely generous to the parish, and so many other people during this time. Furthermore, I know that your prayers have helped many people as well. The future is still filled with a tremendous amount of uncertainty, but your generosity and faithfulness will help us to face whatever frustrations, challenges, or obstacles that come our way. We know that God will continue to bless our parish. I am not worried about the future. I hope and pray that you do not worry about the future either. We will face the future together as a parish family, and I know that we will be able to establish a "new normal" that will help all of us find more peace and hope in these uncertain times. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Stewardship Moment Both the first reading and the Gospel today speak of hos-pitality and welcome. Hospitality is a component of stew-ardship that permeates all areas of parish life and extends to our everyday interactions. When we are gracious and hospitable to others we welcome Jesus into our midst, and we become Jesus for that person.

From your Parish Nurses

Social Action/Christian Service White privilege means that laws are created which favor white people, not people of color. Being questioned in a fabric store about why they are in the store does not hap-pen to white people. White people are socialized to a norm that because of the color of their skin they are in power, whether conscious or unconscious. White privilege is a contributor to the racism that exists in our society.

~Fr. Bryan Massingale, 2020

June is Men’s National Health Month. The following facts were taken from the MensHealthNetwork.org.

Men make ½ as many physician visits for prevention as women.

On average, men live about 5 years less than their female counterparts.

Men have a higher death rate for most leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and suicide.

1 in 2 men will develop cancer in their lifetime

Eat Healthy Eat different types of foods to get all the vitamins and

minerals you need. Add at least one fruit and vegetable to every meal. Portion control by saying “no” to super-sizing. Get Moving Play with your kids or grandkids.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Do yard work.

Play a sport or pick activities that you enjoy to stay motivated.

Make Prevention a Priority Get checkups regularly so

health conditions can be detected early.

Regular screenings should include blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, prostate health and more.

Stock the Food Pantry Thank you to all the parishioners at Our Lady of Victory for another successful food drive. The Knights collected 1796 lbs of food that was donated to St . Anthony’s Food Pantry and $505 in cash donations. We are still getting Baby Bottles returned to the Parish office so we do not have a final total. So far the Knights of Columbus have received close to $3000 to help the Women’s Choice Center purchase an Ultra Sound Machine. Thank you so much to the generous parishioners at Our Lady of Victory. Knights of Columbus Loras Council #532 Grand Knight Rick Willows

This is another record breaking return to the parish and school due to your faithful gifts and continued good stewardship of those gifts. The $55,000 is divided proportionally to the

gifts given toward General Parish Education Fund, JFK Catholic School Staff Fund, JFK Catholic School Scholar-ship Fund, JFK Catholic School Facility Fund, Our Lady of Victory Facility Fund, and OLV Unspecified Fund. The OLV Unspecified fund is the largest portion and we are pleased that this years’ gift back to the parish to the OLV Unspecified Fund will be used in unison with the Cultivating our Future Campaign funds to complete the HVAC project next summer.

Hospice Cookies We continue to keep the patients and the families of the patients, and the caregivers at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in our thoughts and prayers. At this time, there is not a need for cookies for the month of July. We are staying in contact with the hospice house, and if a need for cookies arises in July, cookies will be purchased by the parish, and we will deliver them as we usually do. We will be sure to let our generous and caring bakers know when we can resume this ministry. Feel free to contact Barb at 563-349-7407) with any questions.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - June 28, 2020 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When we were baptized, we were baptized into Christ’s death. Take a moment to ponder these profound words. We were baptized into death. In every sense of the word, we are asked to die. This is not just about our final death but about daily deaths due to inconvenience, discomfort, pain, loss, or others’ needs. This is an incredible epiphany given the way we very often approach our lives. We do everything to avoid death, let alone encounter it! Many avoid pain, discomfort, inconvenience, uneasiness, change, interference, and suffering of any kind. We put a lot of energy into finding the easiest and least inconvenient way through many things. Even holding the door open for a stranger or saying hello to someone in the store can be major undertakings. We are called to die. One of the biggest wake-up calls we can have is realizing that life is not about us! There are millions of other people sharing life on this planet with whom I have a relationship. Does my life celebrate those relationships? The most distracting question we can ask is, “What do I want to do?” The more focused, faith-filled question is, “What do I need to do?” What I need to do may not be what I want to do. However, asking this question more frequently will teach us how to more purposefully and intentionally live so we can be a life giving vessel for others. When we learn to live more sacrificially, to put the needs of others before our own, and to not always seek our own self-interest, we become aware of what baptism into Christ’s death is really all about. These are the roots of virtue and the seedbed for justice, tolerance, solidarity, love, and peace. Learning how to accept all the “small deaths” and sacrifices life calls us to teaches us how to approach our final death. All deaths ask us to empty ourselves into something or someone else. Whether we empty ourselves into the heart and soul of another human being or empty ourselves into God at the moment of our final death, new life is always received and nurtured. A heart that exclusively seeks its own interest is a heart that is closed to love. A heart that pours itself out to others and is content with being emptied is a heart that has been touched by and open to mercy. It is a heart that overflows with joy.
