ASCENSION THURSDAY MASS SCHEDULE

Wednesday Vigil: 5:00p.m., 7:00p.m. Thursday: 6:30a.m., 8:00a.m., 12:00Noon, 3:30p.m., 6:00p.m. (Latin), & 7:00p.m.

Why is May MARY’S Month?

T hough May is a contraction of the name Mary, the month was probably named for Maia Maiesta, the Roman goddess of grain. Each year, on the first day of May, the ancient Romans likewise honored Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, who was repre-

sented by a small statue wreathed in garlands; processions of singers and dancers would carry Flora’s statue past a sacred blossom-decked tree. Later, festivals of this kind spread to other parts of Europe, reaching their height in England during the Middle Ages. Dances around flower-bedecked maypoles were common, and festivities often blossomed into riotous and wild occasions. Often a May queen was chosen as part of the festivities. Devotions, specifically to Our Lady, on the first days of May date to St. Phillip Neri (16th century), who began the custom of decorating the statue of the Virgin with spring flowers. Then, after Annibale Dionisi, an Italian Jesuit, proposed devotions to Mary throughout the entire month, the Church did incorporate the pre-Christian May celebrations and gave them a Christian dimension – as it had done with many other pre-Christian customs.

HOMEBOUND If you or anyone you know is homebound, even for a short duration of time, please contact the parish office so I or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion can be scheduled to bring the Eucharist to the sick and homebound.

CONFESSION/RECONCILATION Our Lord told St. Margaret Mary Alacoque that individuals should go to confession at a minimum once a month. This sacrament is offered EVERY Saturday from 11:00AM to Noon and 3:00-3:25PM; every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 7:30AM, as well as every First Friday at 6:30PM. A Priest is also available to hear Con-fessions daily by appointment.

PRAY FOR OUR SICK Please PRAY in the name of JESUS, the Healer, that the SICK of OLV PARISH may be restored to health and all those who ASSIST and CARE for the sick will be given the STRENGTH to continue GOD’S GOOD WILL: Kathy Freeburn, Marietta Flahive, Tom Giuliano, Marylou Goreb, Thomas Haring, Peter Kellar, George Loder, Lisa LoSchiavo, Anne Matthaei, Timothy O’Shea, Canice Prince, Dan Ra-gusa, Mary Rinner, Suzanne Rothschild, Wendy Ruggiero, Michael Tobia, Kathryn Turrell, Therese Vaglio, Jim Walsh, Bill Weissmeier.

SPIRITUAL EXCERPT

“Mary – God’s most beautiful gift to the human race. The moment Jesus came into her life she was ‘full of grace’ – and immediately she went ‘with haste’ to give Him to others. The fruit of her oneness with Christ, the fruit of her prayer, the fruit of her total surrender to God by saying: ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to Your word.’” Mother Teresa of Calcutta

PASTA COLLECTION For the month of MAY OLV will be having a pasta collection to benefit the St. Cecilia Food Pantry.

EASTER DUTY The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty), that is the obliga-tion of receiving the Eucharist for Easter extends to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, May 27. No one conscious of committing a serious or mortal sin should receive Holy Communion until they have first gone to the Sacrament of Reconciliation a.k.a. Confession. Confessions are heard EVERY Saturday from 11:00AM to Noon and 3:00-3:25PM, every week-day morning at 7:30AM, and Fridays from 6:30-6:50PM. A Priest is also available to hear Confessions daily by appointment.

.CLOTHING BINS We traditionally honor Mary during the month of May. This is most appropriate for the Mother of God who gave birth to the Savior of the world. Mary’s heart is filled with the love of Christ and also with the love of every one of God’s children. Would you be so kind as to imitate that love of humanity by donating to the Catholic Charities bin? We need used clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, novels, and children’s books. God Bless.

FRIDAY ADORATION Just a reminder we have Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays from 12:00Noon – 3:00PM. So stop by and adore Our Eucharistic Lord.

Spiritual Effects of Confession • Reconciliation with God • Reconciliation with the Church. • Forgiveness of eternal punishment for our mortal sins. • Decrease of time in Purgatory (with Penance). • Tranquility of our conscience and spiritual consolation. • Increase of spiritual strength for Christian combat.

SAVE USED EYEGLASSES The Knights of Columbus collects used and old eyeglasses for the less fortunate. Old or “retired” glasses may be left in the basket in the back of Church.

O most gentle Jesus by your most bitter death give us a lively faith, a firm hope, and a perfect charity,

with all our soul and strength. St. Clare of Assisi

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION MASS SCHEDULE

Church Attendance – Fringe Benefits??? Can faithfully attending worship actually raise your income? MIT econo-mist Jonathan Gruber thinks so. In a study, he found that income increases by 10 percent when people double their church attendance. Gruber proposes these possible reasons: • Churchgoers join in fellowship with one another, resulting in social and job networking. • They support one another during losses and setbacks. • Such encouragement helps people do their best in all of life’s endeavors. • Churchgoers tend to be less stressed by everyday life, enabling them

to work creatively and be more productive. • Boosting one’s bank account isn’t the reason most people go to

church of course. But it’s interesting to note that worshipers reap both spiritual and earthly rewards.

THE VISITOR One day, a man went to visit a church, He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up near, the driver got out and said, "I always park there! You took my place!" The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, "That's my seat! You took my place!" The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing. After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, "That's where I always sit! You took my place!" The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still he said nothing. Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, "What happened to you?" The visitor replied, as his hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, "I took your place."

THINK ABOUT IT There are two good things about a closed mouth. It can be interpreted as a sign of superior intelligence, and there is no need to apologize later.

TODAY When The Ten Commandments are removed from society

We lose a true civilization: Logic is dead.

Excellence is punished. Mediocrity is rewarded.

And dependency is to be revered. This is present day America.

When people rob banks they go to prison. When they rob the taxpayer they get re-elected!

Dear Lord,

I thank you for this day. I thank you for my being able to see and hear this morning. I’m blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said, or

thought that was not pleasing to You. I ask now for Your forgiveness. Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things. Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over, and it’s the best response when I’m pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can’t pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak… Keep me up-lifted that I may have the words of encouragement for others. I pray for those that are lost and can’t find their way. I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don’t know you intimately. I pray for those that don’t believe, but I thank You that I believe. I believe God changes people and people change things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers and for each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love, and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees it. “God I love You and I need You, come into my heart, please”.

This is A Keeper

I grew up with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the origi-nal recycle queen before they had a name for it. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage

was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat, and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dishtowel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away ... never to return. So ... while we have it ... it's best we love it ... And care for it ... And fix it when it's broken ... And heal it when it's sick. This is true. For marriage ... And old cars ... And children with bad report cards ... And dogs with bad hips ... And aging parents ... And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special ... And so, we keep them close! Now it's your turn to give this to those people that are "keepers" in your life. Good friends are like stars ... You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Keep them close!

LIFE - What I’ve Learned As I was lying around, pondering the problems of the world, I realized that at my age I don't really give a hoot anymore. ... If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal. … A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, but is still fat. … A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years, while a tortoise doesn't run and does mostly nothing, yet it lives for 150 years. And you tell me to exercise?? I don't think so. Just grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to remember the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Now that I'm older here's what I've discovered: 1. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it. 2. My wild oats are mostly enjoyed with prunes and all-bran. 3. I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart. 4. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded. 5. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded. 6. If all is not lost, then where the heck is it ? 7. It was a whole lot easier to get older, than to get wiser. 8. Some days, you're the top dog; some days you're the hydrant. 9. I wish the buck really did stop here; I sure could use a few of them. 10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents. 11. It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere. 12. The world only beats a path to your door when you're in the bathroom. 13. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he'd have put them on my knees. 14. When I'm finally holding all the right cards, everyone wants to play chess. 15. It's not hard to meet expenses ... they're everywhere. 16. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. 17. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter...I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I'm "here after".

THE TEST This pretty much says it all. An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had never failed a single student before, but had once failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked, and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said okay, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades would be averaged, and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. After the first test the grades were averaged, and everyone got a B. The stu-dents who studied hard were upset, and the students who studied little were happy. But, as the second test rolled around, the students who stud-ied little had studied even less, and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too, so they studied little. The second test average was a D. No one was happy. When the third test rolled around, the average was an F. The scores never increased as bickering, blame, name-calling all resulted in hard feelings, and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great; but when government takes all the reward away; no one will try or want to succeed … Could it be put any simpler than that ...?

KIDZ KORNER 1. Which apostle proclaims "My Lord and my God!" upon seeing the Risen Christ? 2. "Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

self-control" are known as what? 3. To which disciples did Jesus give the nickname "Sons of Thunder"? 4. According to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, what is the consequence of not

forgiving others? 5. According to Paul, what is the "pillar and foundation of the truth"?

God's Accuracy - Beautiful When GOD solves our problems, we have faith in HIS abilities; When GOD doesn't solve our problems HE has faith in our abilities. God's accuracy may be observed in the hatching of eggs ... -those of the canary in 14 days; -those of the barnyard hen in 21 days; -eggs of ducks and geese in 28 days; -those of the mallard in 35 days; -The eggs of the parrot and the ostrich hatch in 42 days. (Notice, they are all divisible by seven, the number of days in a week!) God's wisdom is seen in the making of an elephant. The four legs of this great beast all bend forward in the same direction. No other quadruped is so made. God planned that this animal would have a huge body, too large to live on two legs. For this reason He gave it four fulcrums so that it can rise from the ground easily. The horse rises from the ground on its two front legs first. A cow rises from the ground with its two hind legs first. How wise the Lord is in all His works of creation! -Each watermelon has an even number of stripes on the rind. -Each orange has an even number of segments. -Each ear of corn has an even number of rows. -Each stalk of wheat has an even number of grains. -Every bunch of bananas has on its lowest row an even number of bananas, and each row decreases by one, so that one row has an even number and the next row an odd number. Amazing! -The waves of the sea roll in on shore twenty-six to the minute in all kinds of weather. -All grains are found in even numbers on the stalks. God has caused the flowers to blossom at certain specified times during the day. Linnaeus, the great botanist, once said that if he had a conserva-tory containing the right kind of soil, moisture and temperature, he could tell the time of day or night by the flowers that were open and those that were closed! The lives of each of us may be ordered by the Lord in a beautiful way for His glory, if we will only entrust Him with Our life. If we try to regulate our own life, it will only be a mess and a failure. Only God, who made our brain and heart, can successfully guide them to a profitable end.

THINK ABOUT IT “You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brother-hood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.” William Boetcker German Clergyman 1873 - 1962
