the Sick Coordinator, at 718 631-4793, or the rectory.

Cenacles of Life: Mondays 7:30pm - Rosary and Eucharistic

Adoration; and Saturdays at 8:15am Rosary in the church.

Liturgy of the Hours: Monday to Friday before 9am Mass.

What Is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament?

Exposition is the placement of the sacred host outside

the tabernacle for public adoration. This can take many

forms. The simplest form is the opening of the taberna-

cle doors. Another form is the removal of the sacred

vessels from the tabernacle for a more prominent and

visible placement. The Church also permits a “full”

exposition, when the sacred host is clearly visible in a

vessel called a “monstrance.”

are asked to submit a report to the pastor of the past

years activities by October 15th for inclusion in the

Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained

Discover the big picture of the Catholic faith, and how to live it! Catholicism is an entire way of life. We might be familiar with different aspects of the Catholic faith. But how does it all fit together? And what differ-ence does it make for our lives? Symbolon: The Catho-lic Faith Explained opens up the “big picture” of the Catholic faith in a way that helps us know it, live it and articulate it to others. Join us as our own Fr. Mark Mathias leads our five (5) sessions this Fall. Each ses-sion includes a beautiful DVD and some time for dis-cussion. Symbolon is for everyone, and all are wel-come: those practicing their faith, those disconnected from the Church in any way, and those who are think-ing of becoming Catholic. Respect Life Committee: The House of

Representatives voted, on September 18, 2015, for

the bill H.R. 3504 to add criminal penalties to the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which would en-sure that babies born alive after failed abortions are given equal protection under the law. The idea behind the bill is to protect babies born alive from Planned Parenthood’s harvesting of their body parts in order to sell them. The Center for Medical Progress has re-leased 10 videos catching Planned Parenthood offi-cials selling aborted babies and their body parts. One of the most shocking videos caught Planned Parent-hood harvesting the brain of an aborted baby who was still alive. Companion legislation will be introduced in the Senate. Nevertheless, a spokesperson for the President said that he has “opposition to any effort to wholesale defund Planned Parenthood.” Lifenews.com

Dear Parishioners,

I welcome you all to Our Lady of the

Blessed Sacrament Church today, es-

pecially any guests, neighbors, or pa-

rishioners who have not been here for

a while. While our Holy Father Pope Francis is in

our midst as a visible sign of the unity of the Catho-

lic Church it is a grace-filled opportunity to be to-

gether as a welcoming, inclusive community of

faith. There is a saying in Latin “ubi Petrus, ibi ec-

clesia” or in English “where Peter is, there is the

church.” We are never more church than when we

are gathered at the Eucharistic table. A good number

of us had the chance to see the pope in person but

since I am writing on Wednesday before the fact I

trust that you will hear of our experiences by word

of mouth. No doubt the Holy Father confirmed our

faith in the Lord Jesus, one of his main purposes, as

well as challenged us as a church and as a nation to

be more faithful to our calling. As his pastoral visit

ends today with the Mass in Philadelphia for the

World Meeting of Families, please join me in pray-

ing the official prayer for this occasion: God and

Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,

you have made us your sons and daughters in the

family of the Church. May your grace and love help

our families in every part of the world be united to

one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the exam-

ple of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy

Spirit, guide all families, especially those most trou-

bled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to

always seek your truth and live in your love.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary and

Joseph, Pray for us!

Pre-Cana

OLBS will be offering marriage preparation on Fri. evenings, Oct. 16th & 23rd and Sat. morning, Oct. 24th (all 3 sessions must be attended). Please call Laura: 718-352-9247 or the rectory: 718-229-5929.

Words of Life!

Word of Life September 27th 26th S in OT

“Although we may feel unsure how best to comfort those who mourn, we must stand with them in their time of suffering. Miscarriage touches the lives of many people, yet all too often this tragedy remains unaddressed. This lack of response not only often leads to unresolved grief, but also fails to clearly manifest our belief that each person, from conception onward, is precious and unique.” — Solace and Strength

Lectio Divina

The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart

Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is making a dramatic contrast between “life” (heaven) and Gehenna (hell). He emphasizes that no sacrifice is too great to keep oneself out of the miseries of hell. His images are shocking. Cutting off hands and feet? Plucking out eyes? Ouch! Is hell really so bad that we’d rather go to heaven maimed than go to hell in one piece? Ap-parently so. The point is clear: we need to do what-

ever it takes to avoid sin and ultimately to avoid hell.

The catechism defines this state of eternal misery as “definitive self-exclusion from communion with God” (1033). Yes, self-exclusion. God doesn’t “send” anyone to hell. Rather, someone chooses hell when he or she feely chooses something over God and won’t repent. The choice is ours: cut out the source of the sin - painful though it may be - or stubbornly march with our beloved sins straight into Gehenna. Realistically, what we choose “over” God are not so much our physical body parts as things like a high-paying job that isn’t ethical, a favorite pastime that isn’t morally upright, or a relationship that isn’t chaste. Jesus tells us clearly today, whatever it is that

“causes you to sin, cut if off. Period.

Your Vocation

“Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put His spirit on them.” All Catholics share the prophetic ministry of the Lord through baptism. Is He calling you to bear witness to His truth as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? Call the Vocation Office at 718 827-2454, or email: [email protected].
