The Trinity Is Just A Fancier Way of Saying That God Is Love!

Often, when we hear the word “Trinity” what comes to mind is a complicated and abstract notion which seems to have no impact on our lives. Yet nothing could be further from the truth! For as the Christian writer G.K. Chesterton stated: “The Trinity is just a fancier way of saying that God is love.” It is in the very designation of God as love, that we discover our true calling.

Other religions speak of their gods as performing loving acts, yet for the Christian love is not what God does but who God is. And it is the mystery of the Trinity which describes and defines this loving way of Divine Being. Since God is love, His very being must be structured according to love. In other words, God is the supreme relationship, highest community, most elevated family. For in His very nature, which is relational, there is a play of lover, beloved and the love they share. And this is the Father—lover, the Son—beloved, and the Holy Spirit—the love they share. The Trinity is the play among these Three. For God, to be is to be love itself, that ever dynamic relationship of lover, beloved and the love shared. The Trinity signals the absoluteness of the relational nature of being. In other words, that which is ultimately real is that which exists for the other, in relationship with the other, in communion and family with the other.

Talking about God as love discloses who we are and what is the source of our joy. For we have been made in the image and the likeness of the Trinitarian relationship of Father, Son and Spirit. Thus, for us to be most ourselves, most alive, most full of joy, is when we are most like the One in whose image we have been made. It is when we are living a life in relationship with others and not closed in on our own egos that our lives have meaning, purpose and, joy. Pope Benedict XVI said: “The strongest proof that we are made in the image of the Trinity is this: love alone makes us happy because we live in a relationship, and we live to love and to be loved. Borrowing an analogy from biology, we could say that imprinted upon his genome, the human being bears the profound mark of the Trinity, of God as love.”

Unfortunately, today many are unable to perceive the beauty, greatness and consolation

contained in the word “father”, with which we can turn to God in prayer. It may be hard for some to understand what it means to say that God is our Father. But it is from Jesus, from his filial relationship with God, that we can learn the true nature of our Father who is in heaven. Jesus reveals to us the truest nature of the Father, that He is love. In our prayers as His children, we can enter this family of love that is Father, Son and Spirit. And we can enter this divine family of love by never being afraid to call our God with the affectionate words that a child uses, calling him “Abba, Father”, for that is what Jesus did!

One behalf of the priests, deacons, staff, and volunteers of the Cathedral of St. John the

Baptist, I’m honored to extend to all of our fathers our prayerful best wishes! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! By your witness and love, thank you for inspiring us to address God as “Abba, Father!”
