MASS INTENTIONS
In 1996 Pope John Paul II said, "I urge priests, religious and lay people to continue and redouble their efforts
to teach the younger generations the meaning and value of Eucharistic Adoration. How will young people be
able to know the Lord if they are not introduced to the mystery of His presence?"
Earlier this year, Brittany Greer and other parents of preschool age children have requested a
“Family Eucharistic Adoration” primarily for their young children that lasts typically around
20 - 30 minutes.
The next scheduled dates are shown below and are posted on our parish calendar
at: www.townsendcatholic.org/calendar Dates, times and locations are as follows:
Sunday, October 20th, 2:30 -3:00pm Location: St. James, in West Groton.

Dear Parishioners
Of Our Lady of Grace,
If we travel as a herd with the
weak on the peripheries so that
the predators will be satisfied and
can easily pick them off, it helps
get rid of the weak and lame and
so the herd is purified.
However, for us humans we go to hell. For us the
strong need to surround the weak. The weak need
to get at the center of the herd. The strong need to
get in risky places to defend them.
Those who try to clamber over the weak to protect
themselves live in a hell of competition, with horror
and carnage all around.
The Old Testament and the Gospel both point to
this. The poor, mentally slow, and especially the
morally weak people in our community should be
our best friends, and then we have love and heaven.
In Christ,
Fr. Jeremy St. Martin
Jesus says of the grateful leper;
"Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner re-
turned to give thanks to God?" Jesus is
reminding us by this question that he
misses us when we don't attend Sunday mass.
Pope Francis spoke of the importance of attending Sunday
Mass as it “conforms us in a unique and profound way to Christ...
granting Christians a foretaste of full communion with God in heaven,
where with all the saints we will have the unimaginable joy of
contemplating God face to face.” Our Pope speaks plainly and eloquently about why going to mass is so important, including how we will “[never be able to] thank the
Lord enough for the gift he gave us with the Eucharist.".
If we love Jesus - we will attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation (and encourage others to do the same) ... There are some who
may feel Sunday mass is a good 'option’, however the precepts of the
Church specifically state that missing Mass on Sunday or Holy
days of Obligation without serious reason is a mortal sin. Our
Catechism of the Catholic Church mentions this directly in sections
2180 - 2183. (shown below):
The Sunday obligation specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On
Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass."117 "The
precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the
evening of the preceding day." 2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all
Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason
(for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own
pastor.119 Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. 2182 Participation in the communal
celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to
their communion in faith and charity. Together they testify to God's holiness
and their hope of salvation. They strengthen one another under the
guidance of the Holy Spirit. 2183 "If because of lack of a sacred
minister or for other grave cause participation in the celebration of the Eucharist is impossible, it is specially recommended that the faithful take
part in the Liturgy of the Word if it is celebrated in the parish church or in
another sacred place according to the prescriptions of the diocesan bishop,
or engage in prayer for an appropriate amount of time
personally or in a family or, as occasion offers, in groups of families."
Our obligation to attend mass has its
roots in the Ten Commandments when the Lord commands us...
"Remember the sabbath day—keep it holy. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God. You shall not do any work, either
you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your work
animal, or the resident alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the
seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath
day and made it holy. (Exodus 20: 8-11)
May we have the courage to show our love for Jesus by meeting our
own obligation of attending mass - and encouraging as many people as
possible to do the same... so that Jesus may one day say of us - as he did of the grateful leper: "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you."
Peace, Dcn. Chuck Kelley

Protecting God's Children VIRTUS Description Protecting God’s Children
No child should suffer from abuse. VIRTUS® is a program created to protect children and others who interact with
the Church by preventing wrongdoing and promoting best management practices within the Church community.
The VIRTUS program confronts child sexual abuse through its PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN programs. Most
organizations that work with children have a child safety program in place. The VIRTUS program maximizes those
efforts by helping churches and religious organizations renew their role as safe havens for children and empowering
them with the tools to help adults protect children.
Renewing a church’s role as a child safe environment begins with making adults more aware of the ways children
and adults interact with each other. The VIRTUS program educates and trains adults---clergy, religious, staff,
volunteers and other adults in the faith community---about the dangers of abuse, the warning signs of abuse, ways
to prevent abuse, and the methods for properly reporting suspicions of abuse.
