Take care of yourselves, each other, and the world. Contribute to your communities. Whether it be volunteering as a firefighter, being a soccer coach for kids, giving a musical per-formance, or cleaning up local beaches, you will find that it en-riches your lives, as well, as the lives of others in your communi-ties. Strive to work together in inclusive ways and break down barri-ers in the world. In times of trouble or suffering, find genuine ways to take care of yourself and others by helping to heal and protect. Celebrate your own reason for being in the world. Ask your-selves what brings meaning to your lives and use your natural gifts that you bring to the world. There is a Japanese expression “ikigai” and it refers to being aware of that which makes one's life worthwhile, of that which brings you joy, satisfaction, and a sense of purpose. Have fun. No matter how hard you work or study, remember to take breaks and do the things you enjoy. Know that you are loved and in our thoughts as you go and live your lives. There is an expression in Kwak’wala “kwa’layu’’. It beautifully expresses the idea that you are “our reason for breathing”. We wish you all good health and longevity.

To all our grade 8-12 students next year and their families, we

look forward to working with you during the 2020/2021 school

year. We wish Mr. John Bramham, Ms. Emma Robertson, and

Ms. Rebecca MacKenzie well in their future endeavours and

congratulate Ms. Jen Marshall on 30 years teaching service in

the school district.

Ms. Johnson’s address to the Grads… Gilakas’la I am Stacia Johnson, the Principal of North Island Secondary, and I would like to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territories of the Kwakwaka’wakw where we learn, work, and play. I would like to thank Emma Robertson and Teresa MacKenzie and the NISS staff who helped organize this day. North Island Secondary 2020 graduating students, we are here to recognise your accomplishments, your dedication to your education and to wish you well in your future endeavours. We would like to thank all those who have supported you along the way (your parents, guardians, extended family, community, teachers and support staff). This day is about you and your stories. You each have contrib-uted to what it means to be a NISS family. Each of you brings your unique gifts to share with the world. You have it in you to thrive, imagine, create, innovate and renew. You have it in you to create a world that enhances the lives of all human beings and to bring joy to your future stories. We understand that you are leaving North Island Secondary at a time like no other. However, with the perseverance, the resil-ience and the caring natures that you have demonstrated in your years at NISS and especially in the last couple of months to your families, your communities and your teachers and oth-er educational supports, we have faith that your futures will be bright. It was your perseverance and resilience that got you here. You are now crossing this bridge with dignity, purpose and options. Thank you to all of our staff, students and families for helping us get through this challenging year.

We wish our graduating students the best of luck in your future journeys and hope to hear about

some of the great things you will go on to achieve. We will miss all the students who are leaving us

this year. All the very best wishes to you in this new, exciting chapter.

As many of you already know, I will be leaving NISS to take on the role of Principal at Sea View

Elementary Junior School in Port Alice. I am sad to be leaving North Island Secondary School and have

enjoyed getting to know the students, staff and families here. Thank you for making me feel so

welcome, it has been a pleasure. NISS will be welcoming Ben Donoghue as the new Vice Principal.

Have a great summer everyone. Stay safe and make the most of this beautiful region that we live in.

We would like to thank Mr. Purdon for coming in and

teaching for second semester. Have a great summer.

Thank you Ms. Mackenzie for being here the last few

years. We wish the best in your new teaching position.

New Course Offerings

NISS is happy to announce a few new course offerings in the 2020/2021 school year.

We will be starting a music program with all grade 8s. We are looking at being able to start a school

band in future years.

We will be offering Law 12, Calculus 12, B.C. First Peoples 12, Physical Geography 12, Political

Studies 12, and Social Justice 12.

Erase is all about building safe and caring school communities. This includes empowering students, parents, educators and the

community partners who support them to get help with challenges, report concerns to schools, and learn about complex issues facing students. Services and Information Topics are:
