In God We Trust Perhaps more than ever before, the expression “In God We Trust” should be the thought we think about most on this Fourth of July weekend. I know many in our country would and have taken issue with the expres-sion and have tried to remove it from everything. With all the tragedies we have experienced recently, should “they” succeed, this could be the worst we would see, and no doubt seal a terrible fate for our country. As we celebrate our “Independence” this weekend, may we not forget what motivated our forefathers who founded our country on Faith. When we sing the song, “Faith of our Fathers” this weekend let us remember that we have inherited their legacy. We are caretakers of their legacy and we can’t just throw it away for something different. There I have offered my opinion. As with anyone who listens to one person’s opinion, I would hope there is widespread agreement on this point. I suspect there is here in our Church and community. It is one of the things I love about us! Out of curiosity, I had to do a little research about the expression that should hold so much meaning for us not just because it appears on our money. I greatly appreci-ate that it is found in courtrooms and legislative and con-gressional chambers and elsewhere. I pray the opposi-tion will never win at removing it. I learned the use of it as a motto began in 1860 and was adopted for a two-cent piece in 1864. I believe this may have a long and inter-esting history and so I encourage anyone to “google it” and learn a bit of American history that is an important part of our heritage. I was happy and proud that when the phrase was excluded from coinage and paper bills, there was “public outrage” and it didn’t take long for the US Mint to correct its mistake. That is one protest I would be willing to join. But there is more to this week’s Pastor’s Point than just an expression that for ridiculous reasons has become controversial. The motto for our country is not to be taken lightly. We need to be reminded of what our country should stand for and founded upon. Many people, pioneers, settlers and explorers, came here be-cause of Faith. Hopefully they found what they yearned and hoped for. We celebrate their courage and their faith this weekend. Celebrating independence should always include a celebration of Faith. When we lose our “trust in God” we have lost a great deal more than an expression on our money or on a wall. Trust is everything and God promised to remain with us, and we especially need that reassurance today amidst a global pandemic; riots and destructive behavior; injus-

tice and, unfortunately, the list goes on and on. There is never any better time than right now to base our lives on the expression “In God we Trust” so our focus will be di-rected to the One who matters most and should make us grateful to be alive for we are not just citizens of a coun-try, we are children of God. May your celebration this weekend help you to remember all that you have to be grateful for knowing most, if not all of it was achieved because “In God We Trust.” It is up to each of us to make certain we always will.

St. Maria Goretti • Feast Day is July 6 Virgin martyr and miracle worker in death. She was stabbed to death on July 6 while resisting the advances of the son of her father’s business partner. Maria was born in Corinaldo, Italy, the daughter of a farmer who moved the family to Ferriere di Conca, near Anzio. There Alexander Serenelli, a youth who lived in the same house, tried to seduce the young Maria. When she refused him, Alex-ander stabbed her repeatedly. Arrested for the murder, he was imprisoned and experienced a vision of Maria. Her cause for sainthood was opened because she was credited with some forty miracles after her death. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII (r. 1939-1958) in 1950, as a model of purity. Alexander attended her canonization.
