z Stephen Tam—Woodwind Adjudicator

One of the most versatile and active flautists in Ontario, Stephen Tam is equally comfortable as soloist, chamber musician or orchestral player, performing repertoire ranging from the baroque to the contemporary.

The First-Prize Winner of the 32nd CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition for Young Performers, Stephen has appeared as Concerto soloist in recent seasons with the Canadian Sinfonietta, the Ontario Philharmonic and Counterpoint Community Orchestra. Past concerto engagements included collaborations with the Calgary Philharmonic, the Banff Festival Orchestra and the Toronto Senior Strings. His performances have been broadcast on multiple occasions nationwide on CBC Radio. As chamber musician, Stephen has performed at The White House, the Ottawa International

Chamber Music Festival and the Hong Kong Government House. Highly regarded as interpreter of contemporary music, Stephen is a frequent guest of Contact Contemporary Music, New Music

Concerts, the Array Ensemble, Toca Loca, the Toronto New Music Projects and 5-Penny New Music Concerts (Sudbury).

Stephen is currently the principal flute of the Canadian Sinfonietta, and regularly serves as principal flute with many orchestras and choral groups around Ontario, including the Toronto Mozart Players, Pax Christi Chorale and Cantores Celestes. In the past, he has performed with

the Cleveland Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Ontario Philharmonic. A dedicated and highly-respected teacher, Stephen is a flute faculty member at both the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music and at Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music.

He also maintains a private studio in Thornhill, Ontario.

Stephen received his Master of Music in Orchestral Performance degree and the Professional Studies Certificate from the Manhattan School of Music, where he was a student of Jeanne Baxtresser and Michael Parloff. He also studied with Douglas Stewart at the University of

Toronto’s Faculty of Music, where he obtained his Bachelor of Music in Performance with Honours.

Intermediate and Senior Piano— Ian Green

Ian Green was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Playing piano since he was 5 years old, Ian enjoys playing all styles of music including: jazz, classical, pop, ragtime, blues, and freely improvised music. A graduate of Queen’s University (BMus, 2006) and the Royal Conservatory of Music at Toronto (A.R.C.T., 2006), Ian maintains a thriving music studio teach piano lessons, music rudiments, history, and theory at all levels of the curriculum for the Royal Conservatory of Music. He also enjoys incorporating the various elements of Conservatory Canada and the Canadian National Conservatory of Music (CNCM) to offer a well-rounded teaching philosophy and approach.

In addition to teaching piano and theory lessons to students of all ages, Ian has been very busy wearing many hats in the music industry and music community including: working as collaborative pianist for the Gospel Singers Choir, Rich Harmony Choir, and Burlington Seniors Center Choir (through the City of Burlington); working as pianist, organist and choir director at local churches on a fill-in basis; writing music for various composition projects with Canadian music publishing companies; writing music for advertising contracts in North America; working as a busy music festival adjudicator, having adjudicated the piano classes for all performance levels across Canada and the United States. Ian was co- ordinator of two concert series in the local area: Live Chamber Music Series (Dundas, Ontario) and Ryerson Community Concert Series (Ancaster, Ontario). In addition, he has released two studio albums of solo piano music for worldwide distribution (Starlight, 2015 and Improvisations, 2016)

Ian is a member of the College of Examiners with the Royal Conservatory of Music (Theory, Piano, and Organ), is a member of: the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association; the Canadian Federation of Music Teacher Associations, SOCAN; the Royal Canadian College of Organists; and the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators Association.

Ian is an active volunteer and supporter of great music in the local community and is a loyal patron to the arts. By offering scholarships to young students, Ian believes in the strong spiritual and social values that are offered through all performance art

Brass and Band adjudicator—John Palmer

John is a composer, conductor, performer and adjudicator. He has won Brass Chamber Music composition competi-tions, has been commissioned by the National Flute Associ-ation to compose for their annual conference and is an As-sociate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre. John has adjudicated at numerous music festivals since 2006. He is the conductor of BrassWerks and Orchestra Kingston, has guest-conducted the Greater Toronto Philharmonic on nu-merous occasions, plays Bass Trombone in the KSO and teaches theory and harmony in Kingston.

Junior and Intermediate Piano, Adjudicator JENNIFER SMELE, M.Mus., B.Mus., A.Mus., A.R.C.T., R.M.T.

Jennifer is very active in the Brampton music community as both a performer and teacher. She holds her Master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Toronto where she studied with master piano pedagogue Dr. Midori Koga. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor of Music (Education) at the University of Western Ontario, her A.R.C.T. Performer’s diploma with the Royal Conservatory of Music, and her Associate Teaching diploma with Conservatory Canada. Throughout her studies, Jennifer was the recipient of several academic awards including he prestigious Ontario Graduate Scholarship. Jennifer is an active member of the Royal Conservatory of Music’s College of Examiners and runs a local professional studio where she offers piano and theory lessons in both Classical and Popular genres. She has been a guest clinician at U of T, offering graduate student workshops on a variety of pedagogical topics, and she enjoys adjudicating music festivals throughout Canada. Her workshop, “The Art of Teaching Transfer Students” has been received by O.R.M.T.A. groups with positive acclaim. Jennifer is a versatile, professional vocal and instrumental accompanist. She performs regularly at a variety of venues including nursing homes and churches throughout Ontario and was the Music Director at Trinity United Church in Shel-burne, Ontario for several years. Jennifer has pursued further studies in the field of Early Childhood Music Educa-tion under the direction of Mary Stouffer and collaborative piano studios with Dr. Chris Foley of Oakville, Ontario. She spent July 2013 completing a collaborative piano internship with Music Theatre Bavaria in Oberaudorf, Germany and she pur-sued studies in the field mindfulness practice and performance with Madeline Bruser from New York. Jennifer is currently studying Dalcroze Eurythmics, combining her passions for movement, mu-sic education and improvisation. She recently completed the musician mentorship program with the Canadian National Ballet, training as a dance accompanist. In her spare time, Jennifer loves to ballroom dance.

Diane Manojlovich - Beginner Piano Adjudicator Diane has been involved with and enjoying music festivals for most of her life. An avid participant as a young-ster, Diane registered her own students in various festivals as an adult. She was the festival coordinator for the Rotary Burlington Music Festival for many years, is on the board of the Ontario Music Festivals Association and has attended several National Music Festivals. In 2016, with co-founder and colleague, Tom Oliver, and a fab-ulous committee, she created the Hamilton Music Festival. It is now gearing up for its fourth year. Her musical education began in Niagara Falls with the wonderful Beverly Jamieson and Diane has been fortu-nate to have continued her journey under the guidance of other excellent teachers: Heather Laliberte and Pamela van Weelden. Having earned a Bachelor of Science degree after high school, Diane worked in both the pharmaceutical industry and with industrial chemicals before she left work to be-come a mother. While home with her children, Diane began teaching piano. Realiz-ing that music was much more rewarding than chemicals, she returned to university and earned her Honours Bachelor of Music degree. Maintaining a very busy private music studio, many of her students perform Diane’s own compositions. She sings in her Church choir, has accompanied choirs and solo instrumentalists, and has ensured that her three children have developed their talent and love for music. As past treasurer and recital convenor for the Hamilton-Halton branch of ORMTA (Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association), Diane regularly networks with oth-er teachers in the area. Always conscious of improvement, Diane frequently attends continuing education seminars .

z Larissa Koniuk Voice, Pop and Musical Theatre Adjudicator Larissa is a singer, performer, voice teacher, and guest educator. She has been on faculty at Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts in Toronto for over 6 years. Larissa regularly teaches vocal workshops to high school students for the Canadian Opera Company.

Larissa is a firm believer that everyone can sing and fosters a nurturing studio. A long time practitioner of yoga, Larissa encourages her students to free ten-sions, find balance, and create awareness as they find their unique voice. She teaches classical, music theatre, and popular styles, while ensuring fundamental technique and musicianship are a focal point of each lesson.

An active performer, Larissa’s focus is in contemporary opera, having appeared in many premieres such as: Sweat by Juliet Palmer and Anna Chatterton for Centre for Contemporary Opera at National Sawdust in New York City, Selfie, a new opera by Chris Thornborrow and Julie Tepperman at Tapestry Opera, FAWN Opera’s L’homme et le ciel, a new opera by Adam Scime, Soundstreams’ production of Brian Current’s Airline Icarus, the premiere of Dean Burry and Lorna Mac-Donald’s The Bells of Baddeck, and most recently Llandovery Castle by Stephanie Martin.

On the concert stage, Larissa was recently heard in Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Pax Christi Chorale, Faure Requiem with the Oriana Singers, Handel’s Messiah with the Quinte Symphony, and sang the role of Belinda in Dido and Aeneas with Dan Taylor’s Theatre of Early Music for the Music and Beyond Festival in Ottawa.

Larissa is the founder and artistic director of the Bicycle Opera Project, a company that champions new opera works and tours opera by bicycle! With Bicycle Opera she has performed over 20 new works with Ottawa Inter-

national Chamberfest, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s New Creations Festival, The Royal Conservatory of

Music’s 21C Festival, Stratford Summer Music, Westben Festival, and numerous unusual performance spaces

all over Ontario. As an adjudicator, Larissa has adjudicated the Pickering GTA Music Festival, served on the jury for JUNO Awards, the Ontario Arts Council, and is currently sitting on the jury for the Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

z Choir Adjudicator—Lynn Janes

As a conductor, teacher, and soloist, Lynn Janes’ work spans a wide variety of ages, abilities, and musical styles. For over a decade, Ms. Janes held various appointments with the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, including conductor and voice coach. In addition, Ms. Janes served as the Artistic Director and

Conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir. In September of 2009, Ms. Janes established and conducted the newly formed Pax Christi Youth Choir in a unique and exciting partnership with Stephanie Martin and the Pax Christi Chorale. Currently, Ms. Janes leads the Junior Division of the Canadian Children’s

Opera Company and is the Intermediate Chorus Conductor. In September 2018, Ms. Janes accepted a new position as Music Director of the Oriana Singers of Northumberland County.

As a Music Educator, Ms. Janes established the vocal program at Victoria Park Secondary School. From there, she continued to build a vibrant High School Vocal Program at Earl Haig Secondary School, Claude Watson Arts Program; a program that provided the foundation for many young people to continue to pursue music as a

profession. In 2007, Ms. Janes accepted the Headship of Music at Havergal College, a girls’ preparatory school with a long-

standing reputation for excellence in music education. Over the course of her teaching career, her choirs toured Europe and received many awards including invitations to Musicfest Canada and Kiwanis scholarships.

Ms. Janes retired in June 2017 following a 31-year teaching career.

Ms. Janes musicianship extends to her illustrious performance portfolio as a chorister and soprano soloist. For twenty-four years Ms. Janes sang in the Exultate Chamber Singers, one of Toronto’s premiere professional

ensembles. Her performances as a soloist are featured on all four recordings of the Exultate Chamber Singers. Ms. Janes has also performed as a chorister and soloist for several seasons in the Elora Festival Singers.

Ms. Janes has been recognized for her accomplishments as a conductor and music educator and was awarded the

prestigious Leslie Bell Conducting Prize and the Don Wright Conducting Scholarship from Western University.

Tanya Charles—String Adjudicator

Tanya Charles Iveniuk received a Bachelor of Music in Performance

from the University of Toronto, an Artist Diploma in Orchestral Performance

from the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music and is an

alumnus of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. Currently, she per-

forms with Sinfonia Toronto, and is the second violinist with the Odin String

Quartet. Abroad, Tanya has been the Concertmaster of the Colour of Music

Festival (COMF): Virtuosi Ensemble and the COMF: Symphony Orchestra in

South Carolina, Ensemble du Monde in Guadeloupe and has participated as a

featured artist with the Scotiabank Northern Lights Music Festival, in Ajijic,

Jalisco, Mexico. Tanya is a dedicated educator and an in-demand string adju-

dicator and string clinician in the Southern Ontario region. In the Caribbean,

for over ten years, Tanya has been instrumental in providing assistance with

the implementation of string-education training in Saint Vincent and the

Grenadines. As a Sessional Lecturer at the Faculty of Music at the University

of Toronto as well as a Teaching Artist at both the Regent Park School of Mu-

sic and Axis Music, Tanya aims to train and inspire through music education.

Tanya plays on a violin crafted by Toronto-based luthière, Itzel Ávila, made in

2014.
