3Osoyoos is one of Canada’s most friendly, lifestyle-rich communities...relaxed, yet sophisticated...whether you are here for a visit, want to do business or want to relocate. We have something to offer year round for people of all ages and interests, from water, snow and golf lovers to wine connoisseurs, bird watchers and culture seekers to busy or international businesspeople. We also boast Canada’s warmest lake and its only true desert.

Here you will find a town of gracious and hospitable people, as well as a wealth of eco-friendly unique natural opportunities for year-round recreation and lifestyle. We are rich in culture and history. You’re also in a thriving and sophisticated resort community ideal for hosting organizational functions like conventions and meetings or personal celebrations such as weddings.

The Resort Municipality of Osoyoos is located at the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 3 at the southern tip of the Okanagan Valley and the northern tip of the Great Basin Desert and shares the border and Lake Osoyoos with Washington State. That means we are a border town, two kilometers away from the Canadian-U.S. line and share a friendly relationship with our neighbours to the south.

Listen in to 106.5 FM –CIRO (Community Information Radio Osoyoos) for up-to-the-minute information and programming on community events, activities and insider information! Staff at the Osoyoos British Columbia Visitor Centre can help you discover and plan from the myriad of multifaceted activities available in Osoyoos as well as book local and province-wide accommodations.

If you are interested in planning an event in Osoyoos, exploring economic opportunities or moving here, please visit osoyoos.ca or call 250-495-4614 and speak with the Town of Osoyoos Community Development Manager.

The Unity Rider statue at the entrance to Osoyoos at the junction of Highways 97 and 3 symbolizes the essence of our community: Coming Together. In fact, the name Osoyoos derives from an Okanagan First Nations word that describes “the narrows” or the coming together of two lakes. We look forward to joining with you to make your stay in Osoyoos your best experience ever!

lOving tHe lakeOsoyoos Lake is the liquid jewel of our region and the warmest freshwater lake in Canada. Take a dip in its shimmering waters, camp on its clean beaches, cruise or sail your boat. Partake in your favourite watersport: waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing or kneeboarding...it’s all here.

PlentY Of fiSHAnglers love Osoyoos Lake, stocked with a multitude of species year round. Novice fishers can throw a line for pan fish in the lake’s shallow bays; more experienced anglers can test their skills for trophy bass and trout in the main lake. Fish found here: Large and Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Black Crappie, Brown Bullhead, Yellow Perch, Carp and Sockeye Salmon at certain times of the year.

tHe diverSe deSertWe love the fact that Osoyoos is in an area known as Canada’s “pocket desert”...Canada’s only desert! What that means is a comfortable, warm climate, very little rain or snow (12 inches or 30.5 cm a year), and a fascinating landscape full of unique flora and fauna.

Drought-tolerant shrubs like antelope brush and sagebrush dominate the habitat along with a variety of bunch grasses. From early spring through fall, the Antelope Brush Ecosystem, which is one of the four endangered ecosystems in Canada, features an ever-changing display of flowering plants.

rare Wildlife The South Okanagan is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including about 190 bird species (half of the Canadian total) and B.C.’s highest diversity of reptiles including six species of snakes:

Osoyoos desert centre: Of the 5000 hectares that remain of our original desert, only a small portion lies within protected areas. The Osoyoos Desert Society, committed to conserving this unique environment, is a steward of 27 hectares on which its interpretive facility, the Osoyoos Desert Centre, is located.

Three kilometers north of Osoyoos, the Desert Centre is an interpretive facility where you can learn about desert ecology, habitat restoration and conservation of endangered ecosystems in the South Okanagan. You are invited to explore Canada’s

Western Rattlesnake, Night Snake, Rubber Boa, Race, Gopher Snake and the Garter Snake. A large percentage of endangered and threatened vertebrates in the province live here. Some species, like the ghostly pale pallid bat are found nowhere else in Canada. Others, including more than 20 kinds of insects and spiders, are found nowhere else in the world.

Less than 9 percent of this unique Antelope Brush Ecosystem remains relatively undisturbed, As it vanishes, so does the wildlife. Some of the animals once found here, like the white-tailed jack rabbit, are now gone.

nk’mip desert cultural centre: This state-of-the-art interpretive centre is an architectural marvel sensitively constructed into a hillside at Nk’Mip Resort. Extensive indoor and outdoor exhibit galleries create a fun, interactive learning environment with hands-on displays, education stations and two multi-media theatre experiences. You will discover indoor and outdoor nature and cultural exhibits that showcase desert ecology and wildlife and the history of the Osoyoos Indian Band. You can even get a close look at a rattlesnake or sign up for a hike/rappelling excursion in the desert. Complete your visit by stopping in Coyote’s Gifts to shop for unique Aboriginal crafts, jewelry and giftware. Visit: nkmipdesert.com

desert by taking a highly illuminating guided or self-guided tour along a 1.5 kilometer elevated wooden boardwalk. In addition, the Centre features hands-on exhibits and a native plant demonstration garden. You can enjoy a snack in the outdoor picnic area, relax at one of the kiosks and take in the spectacular views or browse through the gift shop. Don’t miss the annual Romancing the Desert fundraising event in August, a magical evening of drinking wine and eating local culinary creations while strolling the boardwalk under a full moon. gOne tO tHe BirdSBring binoculars! The Okanagan Valley is an important migratory route for birds and almost 300 species can be identified, two-thirds of which breed here. Depending on the habitat, you can spot great blue herons, the rare black-throated sparrow, woodpeckers, warblers, raptors, white-tailed ptarmigan and the boreal chickadee among many others. A third of the South Okanagan is included in the Provincial Land Reserve/Protected Area which means the area around Osoyoos is one of Canada’s best places to birdwatch. Because of the very diverse landscape, ranging from marshes to dry desert, a wide variety of feathered friends can be seen. Haynes Point Provincial Park and the Osoyoos Oxbows host numerous species in their wetlands. The Golden Mile Trail, 16 kilometers north of Osoyoos, is part of the National Bluebird Trail and Vaseux Lake, 35 kilometers north, is the site of a bird sanctuary and summer banding station. Other bird-rich areas include Anarchist Mountain, the West Osoyoos Benchlands, and Mount Kobau. Pick up a copy of the Okanagan Valley Birding Trail booklet at the B.C. Visitors Centre where Highway 97 meets Highway 3, highlighting 17 birding sites with a 35 kilometer radius of downtown Osoyoos.

StarrY, StarrY nigHtSOsoyoos and the South Okanagan are an ideal location for night time stargazers. Here you’ll find dark skies perfect for spotting the planets, stars and galaxies. There are many spots around Osoyoos to view the night skies, be it off a meandering country road in the valley, or from the heights of a hill. All you need is a pair of binoculars, perhaps a telescope, a warm coat, and a thermos of coffee.

You might also want to visit the nearby Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. The largest of its kind in Canada, its radio telescopes capture the sounds of the universe. Visit: nrc-cnrc.gc.ca.

Astronomers from amateur to professional ascend Mount Kobau in August for the yearly Mount Kobau Star Party. From this mile-high summit the heaven-gazing is resplendent; Visit: mksp.ca.

Hike and BikeTake a brief, relaxing stroll along the lake with Grandma and the kids. Make a cycling date with your mate to visit some farms and wineries. Trek for an afternoon with a friend to explore our unique desert, search for unique plants, birds and wildlife or learn about how Indigenous peoples lived in the past. Ascend a hilltop to take in a breathtaking view of the Okanagan Valley to the east and the Similkameen Valley to the west.

Watch out for natural hazards. Know your limitations. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Remember to take water, snacks, sunscreen, maps and prepare for the weather...our summer can be very hot and dry! Grab a light jacket if you’re going up a mountain. And remember...tread lightly, leave only footprints and take only pictures!

rattlesnake alertRattlesnakes like it here as much as we do and you might encounter one, especially on a wilderness hike. Learn how to identify them. Dress appropriately: long pants, hiking boots, preferably over the ankle as they like to bite there. Carry a first aid kit and know how to use it. It’s also a good idea to hike with someone else, and carry a mobile phone device for alert. Know the phone number and location of the closest hospital emergency unit. If you do come in range of a rattler, back off quickly and quietly. Don’t provoke it; they only attack in self-defense. Don’t reach under rocks or into crevasses where snakes like to hide from sunlight. Keep an eye out for snakes, especially in thickets and on boulders. Check your boots, sleeping bags and backpacks before putting them on...you never know if they’re in there! When camping, keep your tent flap zipped shut or you may have an unwelcome visitor. If bitten, use your first aid kit, stay calm, clean, disinfect the wound and seek medical attention immediately.

HISTORY, artS & culture

firSt natiOnS. ancient traditiOnSThe Okanagan Valley and areas east and west of the Okanagan River system have been the home of the Syilx or Okanagan people for thousands of years. The Osoyoos Indian Band, part of the Okanagan Nation, has a proud and independent history in the Osoyoos and Oliver area. Local excavations have revealed how they smoked and dried Chinook and Sockeye salmon, deer, roots and berries for winter supplies. Plants were used for medicines, cottonwood trees to make dugout canoes and wood for building winter pit houses. During the summers, the Aboriginal people travelled by canoe and horse to fishing and gathering spots. Their summer homes were portable lodges covered with cattail or bulrush mats. Winter homes were semi-subterranean pit houses made of logs covered with earth. Generations travelled widely throughout the mountains and valleys trading with First Nations neighbours.

The narrows where Highway 3 crosses a short bridge from one side of Lake Osoyoos to the other was a significant fishing location for the local Syilx people.

The Osoyoos Indian Band continues to play an integral role with the community of Osoyoos, adding an invaluable richness of heritage, arts and economic influence. For a stunning learning experience of the lands, legends and people of the Syilx culture, visit the NK’MIP Desert Cultural Centre with its interactive and fun activities for the whole family.

Of fur, gOld, rancHeS & fruit It was the quest for fur that brought the first white people to Osoyoos. The first fur traders were with an American venture, the Pacific Fur Company, following a trail north from Fort Okanogan, in what is now Washington State. Eventually the fur trade and the trail would be taken over by the Hudson’s Bay Company. That legendary route would become known as the Hudson’s Bay Fur Brigade Trail,

Osoyoos golf & country club: Thirty-six hole multi-level championship course surrounded by views of Osoyoos and its orchards, mountains and of course, Lake Osoyoos. There are a driving range and two courses to choose from: Desert Gold, sculpted into the side of a desert mountain with opportunities for precision shot making and Park Meadows, a pleasurable walker-friendly golf course. Enjoy an icy beer and juicy burger after your game at the Greenside Grill Restaurant.

Sonora dunes golf course: Nine-hole desert links style executive course. Desert sand traps and protected stands of antelope brush overlooking Lake Osoyoos and NK’MIP vineyards. Part of NK’MIP Resort, the course is uniquely connected to the ecology of the desert habitat through its rattlesnake protection and research projects that work in conjunction with the nearby NK’MIP Desert Cultural Centre. In other words, leave your lost balls to the rattlesnakes. Grab refreshments or a meal at the clubhouse.

nk’miP canyon desert golf course: Near Oliver, this stunning course is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band. Play through the spectacular vineyard, sage, and stone vistas. This is what happens when water and experience are added to a dry desert bottom. A striking blend of natural contrasts. Choose from the challenging Canyon Nine course, or the more laid-back Grove Nine. Satisfy your appetite post-game from the fresh, seasonal menu at The Grill.

twin lakes golf resort: This nearby spectacular 115 hectare resort is nestled in a scenic valley surrounded by towering rock cliffs. The course features elevated tees, strategically bunkered greens and fairways, and water hazards on four holes. In the clubhouse you will find the restaurant and lounge offering good food, friendly service, and a variety of local wines and micro brewed beers.

continuing through the Okanagan Valley to Fort Kamloops and points north.

The B.C. gold rushes of the 1850s and 1860s were the next reason for thousands of American miners and cattle drovers to come through Osoyoos, making it a major crossroads along the U.S. border. The Dewdney Trail, completed to Rock Creek in 1861, is now Highway 3. The second gold commissioner, John Carmichael Haynes, also known as the father of Osoyoos, completed the first customs station in 1861 and became the first collector of customs.

Haynes and a partner established cattle ranches to feed nearby mining camps. The local commercial fruit-growing industry was created when an engineer bought some of Haynes’s land and planted 12 hectares of plums, apricots, apples, and other fruit in 1907. Later, in the 1920s, the Irrigation Canal was built on the west side of the valley to supply local orchards with water so that crops could be reliably grown.

And this is just part of Osoyoos’s fascinating history. To explore more of our past, visit the Osoyoos & District Museum and Archives to study fascinating exhibits and collections. Visit osoyoosmuseum.ca.

What’s your appetite? Breakfasts...Hearty family-style pancakes or waffles, a cheesy omelette, something light and nutritious with whole grains and local fruit or a heavenly fresh-baked croissant? Lunches... A locally-inspired share plate, a bowl of savoury soup and a satisfying wrap or sandwich, a crispy veggie-filled salad or a juicy cheese burger and fries...Dinners...Globally-inspired dishes using local organic ingredients, wine country comfort food, home-style lasagna, a juicy steak or some terrific pub grub? And then of course there are those times when you’re just hungry and are in the mood for some artisan home-made gelato or pizza. Here you’ll find cuisines from many cultures: First Nations-inspired dishes, Greek, Asian, Italian, as well as favourites like fish and chips. Whether it’s an elegant dining room, an al fresco patio or a fast food venue you crave, Osoyoos serves up everything your taste buds desire.

A bag of sweet, plump dark cherries gobbled to satisfaction. Juicy, succulent peaches bursting with flavour, juice dribbling down the chin. Crisp, flavourful apples, presenting a mouthful of goodness in dozens of varieties. Tree fruits are what compose many people’s happy memories when they think of the Okanagan, both past and present.

As Osoyoos is the hot spot of the Okanagan and Canada, this is where the fruit ripens first: harvest starts in late June. Here you’re going to enjoy the peak of sublime Okanagan fruits and vegetables, in their perfect climate and terroir. Visit the local orchards and produce markets in season to sample the best of the harvest. While you’re there, pick up some of the jams, condiments and other harvest products to take home as a souvenir of your flavourful visit.

It is no secret that the South Okanagan is home to some of the world’s most renowned wineries and wines. Appreciators of the grape from all over the world visit us year-round to enjoy our wine festivals and seek that ideal winery experience and favourite vintages. Every winery is a unique experience in itself, whether it is a cozy family-owned farm gate enterprise or a stunning architectural and cultural gem that boasts international awards for their wines.

What makes a wine great...or a personal favourite? It starts with the grape variety, the soil of the vineyard, the harvest year and the climate. Our region has an ideal climate for wine grape-growing. Beyond that, it is the methods used to create the wine and the talents of the winemaker. Plus, there is the lingering memory of the winery experience, the people, the facilities, that rush of tasting for the first time.

Osoyoos is an ideal and popular destination for people from across Canada, the U.S. and abroad who like to spend colder months in a warmer or milder climate. Our winter temperatures rarely drop below zero for long and you won’t see piles of snow like other places in the Valley. Snowbirds really appreciate our warm, safe town with its many activities and amenities in Canada’s only desert.

Canadian and U.S. Customs are two kilometers south of Osoyoos on Highway 97.

As a border town, Osoyoos has a long history of mutual support and appreciation with its U.S. neighbours and is very proud of it.

Osoyoos extends a very warm welcome to American friends who wish to visit our delightful town. You will appreciate our authentic hospitality in an exquisite natural setting with a warm, calm lake and desert landscape with infinite recreation possibilities. You will also enjoy our excellent selection of stores, restaurants, golf courses, wineries, produce stands and wide variety of accommodations.

Canadians will appreciate crossing the border to visit Oroville, Washington which is also on the shore of Lake Osoyoos. In addition to boundless outdoor activities, you can experience wineries, an authentic Mexican restaurant, or treasure hunting at local antique and second hand shops. Campgrounds, state parks and picnic sites abound. Take a colourful visit into the past by visiting the nearby historic town of Molson with many of its buildings preserved, including the old school as a museum..

Farther south along Highway 97 is the magnificent Okanogan Forest and the western-themed town of Winthrop.
