Boating, cruising and water-skiingPublic boat ramps and boat rental outfitters make it easy to get on the water. Rent a boat and explore our waterways, or hop aboard a nature cruise and let the captain do the work. Memory Makin’ Guides offers pontoontours of the Winter Haven Chain ofLakes, Lake Kissimmee and the Kissimmee River chain. You can relax on a sunset cruise of Lake Pierce at the Florida Leadership Training Center. If you like to enjoy the water in a kayak,

The “largemouth Bass Capital of the World” welcomes you! Our more than 550 freshwater lakes, scenic rivers and man-made water features are home to bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish and sunshine bass. From the 16 canal-connected Winter Haven “Chain of Lakes”to the 34,948-acre Lake Kissimmee, to a canoe trip down the beautiful Peace River, the fishing is abundant here in Central Florida’s Polk County.

Lakes Mattie and Juliana, located north of Auburndale, abound with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and sunshine bass. Lake Kissimmee, known throughout the south for its bass, also produces large catches of black crappies.

Connected to the northwest end of Lake Kissimmee by a canal, the 6,000-acre Lake Hatchineha produces good catches of largemouth bass and bluegill.

Its cypress-rimmed shoreline provides nesting areas for numerous ospreys, anhingas and other wildlife. Five thousand acres of deep, clear water with a public boat ramp await you at Crooked Lake, six miles south of Lake Wales. Lake Weohyakapka, better known as Lake Walk-in-Water, yields nice catches of black crappie and largemouth bass and is located four miles south of S.R. 60 between River Ranch Resort and Lake Wales. A

scenic river for canoe fishing trips, the Peace River flows from Polk County to Charlotte County.

Polk County offers several locations allowing seasonal hunting for deer, turkey, wild boar or small game. Call 888-HUNT-FLORIDA for hunting licenses and information. Please note that a Wildlife Management Area Permit, in addition to a Hunting License, is usually required to take or attempt to take wildlife on any wildlife management area or environmental area.

Trap and skeet shootingThe sport of trap and skeet shooting allows for an adrenaline-pumping recreational and competitive activity for the whole family. As clay disks fly through the air at high speeds, shooting from a specific distance gives you all the feel of hunting without harming any creatures.

Test your marksmanship at an indoor or outdoor range. Gun rentals are available for use at some locations.

With near-perfect weather and a collection of golf courses designed by some of the biggest names in course architecture, it’s no surprise that Central Florida’s Polk County is a popular destination for amateur and pro golfers alike.

Allow enough time between games to enjoy dining at one of the fine golf course restaurants.

Insider Tips

Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club

Play a rolling course with more than 100 feet in elevation changes one day, then navigate your ball through picturesque wetlands the next. Drive it straight and narrow down oak and palm-lined fairways in the morning, and play golf the way it was born at a

Scottish links-style layout in the afternoon. You could play a round every day for an entire month and still not play every hole.

Historic courses include Cleveland Heights in Lakeland, Bartow Golf Course and Lekarica Hills near Lake Wales. Courses designed by today’s top architects include Southern DunesGolf & Country Club and DiamondbackGolf Club near Haines City, Ridgewood Lakes near Davenport, and Huntington Hills and The Club at Eaglebrooke near Lakeland.

Renowned golf course architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw of Coore & Crenshaw, and Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, worked side by side to create two spectacular 18-hole golf courses at Streamsong Resort. The courses are set to open in December 2012. For more information visit streamsongresort.com.

Alligators are an important part of Florida’s heritage. A good understanding of these fascinating creatures will ensure that you can observe these reptiles while preserving their vital role in Florida’s ecology.

See a gator in his natural habitat! Take an airboat tour in the Lake Wales area, on Lake Hamilton or observe them from the shore of Lake Hancock at Circle B Bar Reserve.

Despite their fearsome appearance, alligators are generally wary of people Male alligators can grow up to 14 feet long

Alligators breed in early spring, and babies break out of their shells in August - September.

Gators’ diets include fish, turtles, birds and small mammals

Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn

Feeding alligators is illegal (and dangerous too)
