TRANSCRIPT
Deforestation happens when humans destroy natural forests. Thousands of years ago, much of the land on Earth was covered in trees. Over time, humans have reduced the size of these forests. People cut down forests for several reasons. One of the main reasons is to clear the land for agriculture (farming). Another is to harvest the trees themselves for their valuable wood. One of the main problems with deforestation is that it destroys habitats. Many different types of animal live in a forest habitat because it provides them with food, water and shelter. When the forest is destroyed, the animals might not be able to survive in a new environment. This can cause them to become extinct.
Another negative effect of deforestation is soil erosion. The roots of trees hold the soil together and keep it moist. Without the trees, the soil dries out and is easily eroded (worn away) by weather. Because of the negative effects of deforestation, many countries have created laws that make it illegal. However, much illegal deforestation still happens. Some countries have tried to plant more trees to restore the forests, but this can take many years. Activity
