Problem Statement
The existing livestock marketing systems in Awka is composed mainly of traders, who engage in mainly subsistence livestock marketing processes, and is comprised of a system where live-stock herders, who are scattered uncoordinatedly all over the state capital (A system currently replicated across much of the country) coordinate their business transactions with the live-stock traders in sub-standard sales environment with the apparent lack of hygienic conducive marketing environment with modern livestock handling and sales facilities within the existing non-purpose built (mostly make-shift) livestock markets.

Design Concept
The conceptual design ideolo-gy adopted for this proposed livestock market is that of a meeting point. This is captured with the market acting as a meeting place for two groups of people namely, the sellers and the buyers.
The segmented massing and layout of the buildings was made to fulfill the clients wish for phased construction. The segmentation was applied in such a way that each segment can function independently.
This design approach largly employs the use of prefabricated construction components, thus enhancing the flexibility of the design, promotes ease of construction and further future expansion.

Design Ideology
The Livestock market design utilises the simple design principles of similarity, Repetition and proportions. It was designed to be built in the tropical rainforest environment of South Eastern Nigeria. Thus, Tempareture balance, Air flow, ventilation, Natural Lighting, micro climatic humidity of the indoor sales spaces were major design considerations.
The massing of the market design scheme creates a Rhythmic flow to the building facade. Also the design incorporates bioclimatic vernacular techniques for regulating the interior micro climatic environment of the market.
The use of mostly pre-fabricated materials and the selection of construction materials that require little or no maintenance, effec-tively takes care of any need for maintenance works and affords the livestock market high sustainability standards.
The livestock market also boosts very low carbon footprint in its use of mainly natural lighting (with use of alternatly juxtaposed tranlus-cent roof sheets) and ventilation schemes (the “open-plan” approach and the use of aluminum lourves siding allowing adequate entry, circulation and recycling of natural ventilation).

Project Info
The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Administration in its quest to contribute to the preservation of Igbo cultural Identity and safeguard the traditional heritage of the Igbo people (who are the host community of the institution) decided to establish a cultural centre for the preservation, documentation and promotion of Igbo cultural heritage.
This is the design proposal for a centre for Igbo Arts and culture, is to be located at the Awka main campus of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The centre is to have the following space provisions; An Auditorium, Exhibition Spaces, Restaurant, Lodging rooms, bar, Gift shops, parking spaces and management offices.
Problem Statement
The university management expressed worry that most Igbo people as a result of overseas residency and travels are losing interest in Igbo culture as most of them now imitate foreign cultures.
This trend can easily be attributed to colonisation, Westernisation and globalisation has resulted in young people of Igbo extraction jettisoning the intergenerational transmission of the Igbo culture is exchange for western trends.

Igbo Art and Architecture
The design concept was greatly influenced by elements and traditional components adopted from the artistic and cultural features of Igbo art and Architecture.
The massing and layout of the buildings comprising the cultural centre were rooted in the Igbo Idealogy of the “village square”, where buildings (huts in this case) are laid out in such a way as to create an enclosed space for socialization and communal gathering. This spatial arrangement of the building layout helps form an intimate micro climatic courtyard space with the exhibition spaces acting as the central core of the scheme.

Architecture Character
The proposed design in its elements responds to the varying conditions of the contextual location and the demands of climate, culture and economics.
The building design was centred around individual spatial volumes with each housing separate programmatic functions.
The individual building massing were then laid out along a revolvng path, which is then enveloped and fused into a unified culturally themed Architectural composition.

Design Context
The buildings presents an engaging presence which allows for functional and visual interactions between the cultural impressions of the surrounding igbo community with the architectural character of the facade. Thus creating a link between the cultural centre and the Igbo people with its incorporation of elements of Igbo Arts and culture in its Architecture.
The concept generates a native-urban interaction between traditional African idealogies and modern Western design principles and construction technologies. This Interaction results in a strong link to the cultural symbolisms of the Igbo people.
The cultural centre also acts as a culturally themed socio political meeting point for the local natives, students and the visiting tourists.

Conceptual Analogies
Fig 2.7 : Conceptual Transformation of the Ikoro
The design employs a combined visually sym-bolic and idealogical analogies with its de-piction of forms that are culturally symbol-ic and synonymous with the Igbo People. The visual analogy is captured with incorporation of the local highly symbolic “Ikoro” into the building fabric. An “Ikoro” is a musical instrument created and used by the Igbo of Nigeria. It is a slit drum that is beat-en with a stick or sticks and can be used to communi-cate important messages from one village to another.
Space ZoningThe cultural centre space programming was generated with spaces zoned according to the functional relationships of the spaces with considerations for space utilisation, degree of privacy desired, use of the space and occupants comfortability. This informed the decision to locate all public and anticipated frequently utilised spaces on the ground floor.

The decision to integrate the “Ikoro” as a spiral stair-case leading to the main exhibition gallery was in recognition of the highly significant and symbol-ic stead it occupies in ancient Igbo mythology. The Ikoro is not beaten by everybody, It is so special that any time its sounds, people will gather at the village square. So, the inevitable thing that happens any time the Ikoro sound is heard is that people must gather at the village square to hear the latest development in the community.

The idealogical analogy is captured in the circular form adopted for the building with the cultural centre constituents buildings compositional form obtained from the circular form of the local huts of the natives. Also central to the concept of the centre was the need to preserve ancient encodings of the daily life, actions and thoughts of the Igbo, all of which provide glimpses of the social, political and cultural history of the ethnic group.
