Created in the Middle Ages, the Order of Malta is one of the few orders from that time still active today. Built upon nobility and benevolence, the Order of Malta engages in a number of humanitarian activities. At the forefront of these efforts is a historic mission to help the sick and disadvantaged throughout the world. In more than 120 countries, the Order of Malta offers medical and social assistance programs as well as humanitarian aid.
Throughout their hundreds of years of existence, the Order of Malta has been at the forefront of a number of humanitarian efforts, including setting up field hospitals during the Vietnam war and providing relief to refugees during the Kurd and Balkan crises. Most recently, the order offered emergency relief for victims of earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.
