Involvement of all social stakeholders in theprocess since Heland aims at responding tonew demands, not only of the tourists butalso of the local stakeholders.

SWMED

The aim of SWMED was to promote, in each of theparticipating countries, including Malta, policesaimed at satisfying water and sanitation needs of theaimed at satisfying water and sanitation needs of thepopulation, whilst reducing water abstraction andimproving the quality of water bodies receivingwastewater.

Maltese partners were involved in disseminatingwater saving kits in each Gozitan household (as apilot study). Each locality had a different type of kit.Afterwards, these households were asked to givefeedback on the use of these kits and according totheir replies, results were issued.

Such results, together with other partners’ results,served to draft solutions on the water savingmethods used and needed for every different type ofhousehold in the different partner countries involvedin the project.

Med-Jellyrisk

MED-JELLYRISK was the first-ever internationalattempt to assess the socio-economic impacts ofjellyfish blooms and implement mitigation counter-measures.

An anti-jellyfish net was installed in Pretty Bay,B’Bugia.

In addition a Med-jelly mobile app was launched.Its main objective is to provide clear and accurateIts main objective is to provide clear and accuratereal-time information about jellyfish: e.g. if thereare jellyfish on the beach, which species arepresent, which species exist, what to do if you getstung by a jellyfish, and all the relevantinformation about this topic.

Staff at the Physical Oceanography ResearchGroup within the Department of Geosciences atthe University of Malta, have launched a jellyfishdispersion model through which users can trackthe forecasted pathway, for the next four (4)the forecasted pathway, for the next four (4)days, of a jellyfish bloom they observe in thewaters around the Maltese Islands. Scow

The aim of SCOW was to develop low cost,technically simple and high quality biowastecollection and recycling models in territories withtouristic areas and agricultural activity.

In Malta, waste for this pilot study will be providedfrom hotels, schools and vegetable processingplants, which will then be transferred to a compostplant, where compost will be generated.

In addition, a number of ‘mini composters’ whichshall be distributed to various entities in Maltashall be distributed to various entities in Malta(schools, local councils, etc) were purchased underthe project, whereby such entities can generatetheir own compost and use it in public gardens,school premises, etc.

The aim of the MEDALGAE project was to enhanceregional and cross border collaboration for theregional and cross border collaboration for thedevelopment of a new generation of biofuels frommicroalgae.

FTZ was responsible of the following main activities:

• Research and lab analysis of micro-algae samples

• Installation of raceway ponds for the algae growthpilot project

• Installation of photobioreactors

• Collection of data from samples and analysis of co-products

• Business plan based on co-product customers

MIEMA took part in the following main activities:

• Setting up and organisation of local stakeholderscommittee

• Similarly, the organisation of local steering committeemeetings

• Identification of potential sites for the production of bio-fuel from micro-algae based on the location of resourcesfor algae growth and potential co-product customers

• Pre-feasibility study for the implementation of a large-scale algae-to-biofuel plants
