From the President… Hey there OSPB, so happy to be an orchid enthusiast this month! What fun I’ve had

mainly gearing up for the Ft. Lauderdale show this past weekend. As I shared at our meeting and last month in

the newsletter, we were involved in putting together an exhibit for our good friend Tony at R&R Orchids. It was

an incredible experience that I will cherish forever. All of my concerns and expectations were trumped by the

amazing, talented, creative team we put together. I was blown away by the passion that we all possessed in

different areas building this masterpiece! A lot of work went behind the scenes leading up to the show but one

thing remained constant….can you guess??? Tony’s plants kept getting bigger, bolder and more colorful. He

has overshot all the competition in my opinion to be the best vanda grower in south Florida. After hearing all

the feedback and comments from those enjoying the show made all the hours of preparing well worth it. Not

to mention his plants received 8 awards...pretty unheard of for one exhibit. The details of his awards will be

announced either later in this message or at our next meeting. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Auction.

Remember to bring a friend! Your President Jacob Galeski

Notes from Charline….The Saturday workshop will resume in March in time for repotting help and growing

ideas. Patt Lindsey has graciously agreed to host us at her house in Loxahatchee. When it gets hot, we will

move to an air-conditioned location. More details later. My thanks to Linda Grecko, who has assumed the

responsibility of co-Vice President. She will coordinate for the speakers and host them at our meetings. Her

mom is Dot Reip, who was secretary for OSPB for many years “back in the day.” Linda is a good grower and is

enthusiastic about her new job with OSPB.

February Meeting: The auction will start promptly at 7 p.m. Come early so you can decide what you want

to bid on. Member donations of an orchid to be auctioned are most welcome! If you can donate an orchid,

please come by 6:30 so your plant can be numbered and placed on the sale tables.

John Wallace has volunteered to arrive before 5 pm to hold the room. Refreshments to be provided by the

February birthday babies, Marie Krull, Martha Lawson, Patt Lindsey, Bill Madden, and Cyndie Sable.

News Flash from Patt Lindsey……

Hello OSPB,

I had the pleasure of helping to build a magnificent orchid exhibit for our good friend Tony Romani of R&R

Orchids at the Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Society’s show last weekend at the War Memorial Auditorium; along

with my good friends and OSPB members, Jacob Galeski, Tipr Kennedy, Cheryl Akey, and Diane Patrick. We

also asked a multi-talented member of the Jupiter/Tequesta Orchid Society and Tropical Orchid Society,

Cherie Blinkenstaff for advise on how to go about it because she has won many awards for the displays she

has previously been involved with. She graciously agreed to take the day off from work and not only share

her energy and knowledge, but also all of her of her exhibit – building materials and supplies and haul them

all down there in her SUV pulling a trailer behind it.

Jacob and Tipr had been busy for several days prior to the show building a sturdy wall and hanging post to

suspend Tony’s monster plant of Trichoglotis wenzelii ; which would be the focal point of the exhibit. We

planned to have a zip-line to capture the theme of the show, Orchid Adventure. Tipr built the most amazing,

true- to -life zip line; and Charline Nakamura, who remained in the background as an advisor, shopped and

found the perfect doll (after we removed her hot pink, spike heeled shoes) to use as the rider.

As you all remember we asked for members to loan us plants to use and we had a truck load to transport.

Cheryl and I met Jacob at his house at 8:00 a.m. and Tipr and Jacob loaded my truck with all the big stuff to

haul and more blooming orchids. Cheryl had to hold orchids on her lap all the way to the show. After a

lengthy delay on the turnpike because of an accident we arrived at the War Memorial Auditorium about 10:15

and the guys went right to work building the structure. We girls started cleaning and staking plants. Diane

Patrick has beautiful penmanship so she was in charge of making all the plant name labels.

The structure was built and the monster plant was secured first and then the other plants were placed,

carefully following the color flow. All the pots had to be covered with black fabric and ferns were added as

accent plants, then moss was used to cover all the other areas we wanted to hide. 11:00 p.m. was the

deadline and we finished with 15 minutes to spare. We were all really tired but very pleased with ourselves

when we stepped back to survey the finished product. It was Simply Awesome…!!!

Tony received 8 Americian Orchid Society awards

including a CCE of 96 points (Certificate of Cultural

Excellence) for his Tricoglotis wenzelli. This award is to

the grower. This is the very first plant Tony ever got and

you can see how it was grown with love. The award

certificate reads like this: Four thousand, six hundred

and eighty flowers and 195 buds on 1560 inflorescences

borne on 65 crowns on a spectacularly grown robust and

unblemished plant, 135 CM wide by 190 CM high, hanging on a 45-60 CM piece of

driftwood, growing in an orb shape. Sepals and petals chartreuse, bearing deep burgundy

bars in center; lip white with lavender spots and bars in center; column white overlaid

lavender; column lobes ciliated; substance heavy; texture waxy. He chose ‘First Love’ as

the clonal name. Other awards were for Best Flower in the Vandaceous, Best Ascocentrum-Ascocenda,

Best Vanda Pink-Red, Best Vanda Blue-Purple and I’m sure I’m missing something.

Van. Azure “Blue Eyes’

AM/AOS (83 pts.)

Ascda. Crownfox Golden Dawn ‘Pammela Dupuis”

AM/AOS(82 pts.)

It was a wonderful experience putting in this

show. I was exhausted, (getting too old for this)

but it was so rewarding; especially to see all the

attention from the people at the show. I’m sure

it was the most photographed exhibit there. Our

team worked so well together, the crew from Ft

Lauderdale Orchid Society was very helpful and

accommodating; providing sandwiches for lunch

and pizza for dinner.

We are looking forward to next year’s show

already. We know how to do it now.

Look out everybody, “We’ll Be Back”!
