you may have noticed that our Shaggy Sheet has grown recently as we’ve added four more pages to this publication. We certainly have no trouble filling up these new, additional pages with great photos, stories and other important (and fun!) information. The truth is, we have so much to share because of you. your kindness and caring support are allowing us to help more animals than ever before.
The last few months have been an exciting time at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue league. Who could forget the record crowd of people and dogs at this year’s Walk for the Animals? Or our first ever television Adopt-A-Thon with CBS 12 that helped 18 animals find new homes. you’ll read more about both in these pages.
I’m also very excited to introduce you to some of the amazing people – the many faces – who touch each dog and cat from the time they arrive to the moment we all celebrate: when their adoption is finalized and they go home to their new, loving home.
And as we go to press, we’ve just learned that the Animal Rescue League is a finalist for the Nonprofit of the Year Award presented by the chamber of commerce of the Palm beaches. none of this could be possible without you!
As we look back and celebrate, it’s also important to remember the challenges that lie ahead. We know that reproductive cycles peak during our warmer months and the number of cats and dogs needing
food, shelter, and medical care goes up significantly. With your continued support, we will meet these challenges and save hundreds of additional lives this summer.

It takes a lot of people to run a successful and caring animal shelter, and as you know, our volunteers play a huge role in this important process. last year, our volunteers contributed more than 21,000 hours.
If your dog or cat has ever had surgery at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue league, bob Hazzard has likely played a role in it. As a volunteer, Bob comes in five days a week to prepare our sterile surgical instrument kits.
It’s not unusual for us to have more than 30 surgeries scheduled a day. each box of supplies can be used only once before it must be sterilized.
The kits are carefully assembled so that our surgical teams can just open them and be ready to start immediately. Think of bob like a race car pit crew. The time he saves us really adds up and allows our veterinarians to perform more surgeries per day.
Please join us in thanking bob for his kindness and dedication. We couldn’t ask for a better volunteer.
vOLuNTEER spOTLIGhT: MEET bOb
Imagine being a dog with a broken leg and no home. Antoinette came to our shelter after her family could not afford the cost of treating her severe injury.
When we examined the 4-year-old Italian greyhound, we learned that her right front leg was fractured where it was previously fractured and pinned. The leg needed to be plated by an orthopedic specialist and the surgery would cost more than $2,000.
In these cases, the high cost of surgery is a tremendous barrier for an animal in need of a forever home. Fortunately for Antoinette, we have olivia’s Fund. named after an abused dog that was rescued from an animal hoarder and needed special treatment, the fund allows us to go the extra mile for dogs and cats. Through the fund, we’re able to address medical or behavioral needs that can be fixed with surgery, special medical treatment, or training.
With the help of olivia’s Fund, Antoinette went to a specialist for her surgery and then to a wonderful foster home to recuperate. It turns out she never had to leave, because her foster dad loved her so much, he adopted her.

ThE FAcEs OF ADOpTIONIn 2012, we helped 3,263 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens find new
forever homes. This is a true team effort. come behind the scenes
to meet all of the dedicated staff and volunteers who help a typical
animal find a new forever home.
Su, a member of our Phone bank, receives a call of an animal in need. She directs the caller to our shelter staff. our phone bank receives up to 400 calls a day.
Kristin, a Receiving clerk, accepts the animal. She creates a computerized medical record, gives the animal a unique ID,
takes a picture, and identifies the breed. Kristin will find out why
the animal is being surrendered or where it was found. She will also check to see if the animal has a microchip identifier.
nestor, a Veterinary Technician, gives the animal an initial medical exam. He looks for signs of common diseases. If negative, nestor will provide vaccinations. He will also check for a microchip, examine the ears and teeth and estimate the animal’s age.

will either have the animal
receive the training in the
holding area or with a
foster family.
If the dog requires spay/neuter surgery, carolina, a Surgical Technician, prepares the animal. She will

does not have a microchip, one is

The adoptive family may visit barb in our Shaggy
Shoppe boutique to pick up supplies, toys, and treats.
Paul, a member of our client Services team, accepts payment for the adoption. The county rabies tag is purchased, the animal’s microchip
is registered, and future medical needs are discussed. The new family
will be told about free behavior classes as well as ongoing training and support available from Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue league.

standardized test helps
us get to know the
animal’s personality.

be transferred to the
adoption area of the
grace Pavilion. Joan,
a Kennel Technician,
oversees the feeding,
walking, and cleaning.
Michelle, our Marketing coordinator,
takes a high quality photo of the
dog or cat. She also writes up a
profile of the animal, noting the
breed, size, color, temperament, and
history. This information is shared
online and in the kennels. every
week, Michelle profiles adoptable
dogs and cats on local TV stations.
barbara, another volunteer, helps maintain the psychological health of the animals by filling Kong chew toys. other mental health activities
include play groups and Kennel Zen, where dogs learn to be relaxed
around strangers.

as a matchmaker
and ensures that the
animal finds its true
forever home.
A stylish evening, devoted to our animals, greeted visitors to badgley Mischka of Palm beach. Fashion designers, Mark badgley and James Mischka, and animal lover, georgina bloomberg, held a reception in our honor at the Palm beach store. A portion of the sales from that week were donated to our animals.
Some of our adoptable dogs were fashion models at the Palm beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show. Designer and Peggy Adams Animal Rescue league supporter, bruce bierman, featured them in his showcase room. The special display, which was seen by hundreds, was focused on the role dogs play in the treatment and prevention of depression.
The room, called, “Happiness is… Diamonds and Dogs,” helped us raise awareness of the league and our wonderful animals. We were honored to demonstrate the emotional support we receive from our animals.
In Wellington, an event that’s all about horses was taken over by our dogs. The FTI Winter equestrian Festival’s Saturday night lights gave us two opportunities to showcase our adoptable dogs.
We had a chance to spend time with new and old friends, who later saw us parade our animals in front of the crowd while the announcer talked about our mission.
our dogs performed extremely well and some were adopted the next day by attendees. We are very grateful to georgina bloomberg for providing us this opportunity to introduce the equestrian world to some different four legged friends.

A GOOD hAbITRecurring giving is a wonderful way to make an ongoing commitment to our animals. Instead of having to make a one-time large gift, you can spread out your generosity over time.
To get started you can either use the enclosed reply form with your credit card information or you can visit our online giving page at HSPb.org and select the “recurring giving” option. In both options, once a month, your gift will be charged to your card.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue league was proud to partner with TV station, cbS 12, on an Adopt-A-Thon. In the days leading up to the event, a total of 20 dogs and cats were profiled on the TV station’s website and in on-air promotions.
on February 21, news crews were live at the shelter during the morning, noon, and evening newscasts. During the evening newscasts, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue league staff answered calls at the TV station from potential adopters. Then those people would travel to our shelter for a formal adoption appointment with the dog or cat.
by the end of the day, 18 animals found new, loving homes. This included the profiled animals, some of their siblings, and other animals who were adopted on that day.
This event gave us a chance to use the power of the airwaves to introduce our wonderful dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens to a new audience. The Adopt-A-Thon also appears to have energized our community as the following weekend saw more animals adopted than usual and many more people bringing their pets to our affordable vaccine clinic.

FIonAWe are having the best time with our new kitten! We renamed her Fiona and she’s super cute and sassy. Her big brother Moose is incredibly patient with her, even when she’s playing with his tail. Fi, as we call her, loves her new foil toys and we have to watch very carefully when she sneaks out the doors. She’s a pistol and has grown so much already. We love her!
ZIggyMaurice is doing great, and his new name is Ziggy. It took us a few weeks to get to know each other, but now we’re good. He looks great, his coat is shiny, and he loves being able to run out to my enclosed patio at any time. He’s very affectionate and talks up a storm! I’m so glad I got him and will forever consider adoption first!
RocKy He is doing absolutely great. Rocky settled in very, very well. He has got an amazing personality and loves to play fetch with a ball. It’s so funny because you throw the ball and he chases it like mad. He then collects the ball and brings it back to your feet to go again. These ball sessions can last around 20 minutes or so - He’s so enjoyable! you guys have an amazing place and do a great job! Thanks!

MuTTs AT ThE MOvIEsImagine a picture perfect evening spent outside with your favorite dog, and a movie you’ll both enjoy. That’s what you will experience at this August’s Mutts at the Movies. The event is part of the city of West Palm beach’s outdoor movie series, Screen on the green.
