Characteristics of Electrical Driven Drilling Rigs
Electrical Driven Drilling Rigs
▋ Basic parameters of drilling rig are in accordance with
GB/T23505-2009 Petroleum Drilling and Workover Rigs
●Stepless speed regulation of drawworks, rotary table, and
mud pump is realized as a result of adopting AC-SCR-DC
control system and power compensation technology in DC
motor driven rigs, thus a better drilling performance can be
acquired.
▋Hoisting speed, rotational speed of rotary table, and strokes
of mud pump can be adjusted as per needs owing to adopting
advanced VFD full digital control technology in AC variable
frequency motor driven rigs, thus drilling efficiency has been
improved.
▋A kind of integral rising slingshot substructure (height 7.5m,
9m, 10.5m) is used. The equipment on the drill floor and mast
can be installed at ground level and integrally raised to the
designated position with power of drawworks or hydraulic
wire-line winch.
▋ The hydraulic disc brake is used as main brake of the
drawworks. The braking torque is large and it is reliable to
brake. The brake handle is located in the driller’s cabin to
greatly reduce the intensity of driller’s labor.
▋ The rotary table is run by an INDEP drive and the chain
box has two gears. They are placed under the drill floor, on
which there is a large operation area.
▋ Either eddy current brake or Eaton Brake can be
considered as auxiliary brake of drawworks. A smooth,
labor-saving, easy control tripping operations is ensured.
The service life of brake rims (disc) and brake blocks is
efficiently prolonged. The drum is grooved and the wire line
is orderly wound round it. The collision avoidance systems
(over-spool, weight, and digital display) are available to
increase in the safety of drilling operations.
▋ The drawworks is provided with an automatic driller.
▋ Main components/parts are designed and made to API
Spec for ease of participating in international bids of drilling
rigs.

Characteristics of Mechan-Electric Drilling Rigs
Mechan-Electric Drilling Rigs
▋Power of drilling rig comes from 2000 or 3000 series diesel engine and fluid coupling reducer
casing (or gear reducer).
▋ The drawworks and the mud pumps are mechanically driven. The rotary table is
independently driven by AC frequency motor or DC motor.
▋ Easy installation and better sealing as a result of taking an integral chain box or V-belt
compound transmission unit.
▋ The drawworks is equipped with the grooved drum and shifting a gear for it is carried out by
air cylinders. The hydraulic disc brake is regarded as main brake and the eddy current brake as
auxiliary brake.
▋An emergency motor is available for drawworks. Prior to starting the diesel engine, the mast
is raised in advance. If there is something wrong with master clutch and power can not be sent
to the drawworks, it will be used to lift the drilling tool so as to reduce accidents occurred in well,
realizing safety drilling operations.
▋The rotary table can accomplish stepless speed regulation with 0~210r/min. AC or DC is
supplied by an auxiliary generator set.
▋The substructure is of integrate, one step risen type (or swing-lift type). It is installed at ground
level and raised/lowered with the mast (or independently raised/lowered).
▋The mechanical parts of rig are in accordance with API Spec.

Mechanical Driven Drilling Rigs
▋ The drilling rig is driven by diesel engines, hydraulic
coupling & chain compound box or diesel engines, reducers &
narrow V-belt, which provides smooth mechanical power to
the drawworks. A number of hoisting speeds and rotary
speeds are available.
▋The drawworks is installed at ground level. Power is
transmitted through bevel gear and universal shaft to the
equipment on the drill floor. It is reliable in driving and easy in
assembly/disassembly.
▋The drawworks (40 and 50 model) utilize air clutch for
shifting gears, which are suitable for remote control.
▋Either band brake or hydraulic disc brake can be
considered as main brake of drawworks and either an eddy
current brake or EATON brake as auxiliary brake.
▋ The chain driven rig is driven by the integral enclosed
compound chain box (or narrow V-belt) and coupling. During
any rig moves, it is unnecessary to dismantle the chains (or
narrow V-belt) for fast installation.
▋ The mast is of open-front type without guy line. It is
integrally raised and installed at ground level.
▋ The substructure is of a box-on-box type. It is simple in
structure and easy to install. It is applicable for mounting
B.O.P installations. The rotary table and the transmission unit
are flush with the rig floor. The drill floor is flat and the
operational area is large

Introduction to ZJ50/3150D(DB) Drilling Rig
Basic parameters of ZJ50/3150D (DB) electrical driven rig
are in compliance with GB/T23505-2009 Petroleum
Drilling and Workover Rigs and international standards.
The major components are in accordance with API Spec.
and meet the requirements of drilling technology. The rig
is safe and reliable.
Features are as follows:
▋Stepless speed regulation of drawworks, rotary table,

Basic parameters of ZJ70/4500D (DB) electrical driven rig are in
compliance with international general requirements of 2000HP rig. The
major components are in accordance with API Spec. and meet the
requirements of drilling technology. The rig is safe and reliable.
Features are as follows:
▋Stepless speed regulation of drawworks, rotary table, and mud pump
is realized because of adopting SCR (VFD) full digital electrical control
system in the rig, thus obtaining a better drilling performance.
▋Modular design is applied for ease of handling and transportation

ZJ80/5850D DC motor driven ultra-deep rig is specially designed for
Tarim Kuqa Area and meet the requirements of casing with larger
diameter, bigger tonnage and of high-pressure drilling. Self-innovating
technology is applied for the rig. The key components are home made.
Features are as follows:
▋Advanced mains supply and power compensation technology is
adopted in the rig, thus acquiring higher power factor and
power-saving/environment protection.
▋High-pressure mud circulating system is available. The working
pressure of swivel, mud pump, and drilling fluid manifold is 7500PSI
(52MP).
▋The drawworks is designed as per 3000HP to have larger hoisting
speeds and higher efficiency.
▋The hydraulic disc brake is regarded as main brake of drawworks and
DS80 eddy current brake as auxiliary brake. An auto feed driller with
motor is available.
▋ZP375H rotary table with large torque is available. The rotary table
and its drive are modularly designed for ease of
assembly/disassembly and moving.
▋The wire line for mast and substructure is reeved only once. The
substructure is of swing-lift type and raised continuously with power of
drawworks. The equipment on the drill floor is raised to position
together with the substructure.
▋The rig is modularly designed for ease of lifting and moving.

Introduction to ZJ90/6750D Drilling Rig
ZJ90/6750D DC motor driven ultra-deep rig is designed according to
maximum static load of 6750kN, 5 1/2” DP, and depth range of 9000m.
Self-innovating technology is applied for the rig. The key components
are home made.
Features are as follows:
▋Advanced mains supply and power compensation technology is
adopted in the rig, thus acquiring higher power factor and
power-saving/environment protection.
▋High-pressure mud circulating system is available. The working
pressure of swivel, mud pump, and drilling fluid manifold is 7500PSI
(52MP).
▋The drawworks is designed as per 3000HP to have larger hoisting
speeds and higher efficiency.
▋The drawworks is installed at ground level. The hydraulic disc brake is
regarded as main brake and DS90 eddy current brake as auxiliary brake.
An auto feed driller with motor is available.
▋ZP375H rotary table with large torque is available and run through
two-gear gear reducer.
▋The mast and substructure adopts a new swing-lift type and is raised
through A-frame with power of drawworks. The equipment on the drill
floor is raised to position together with the substructure.
▋The rig is modularly designed for ease of lifting and moving.

Introduction to ZJ50/3150JD Drilling Rig
▋ZJ50/3150JD rig is of mechan-electric driven one. The drawworks
and the mud pump are mechanically driven and the rotary table
independently by DC motor.
▋Power of the rig comes from three G12V190PZL-3 diesel engines,
gear reducer casing & narrow V-belt compound and divides into three
branches: one is to run two 1300HP/1600HP mud pumps through two
universal shafts, the second is to run the drawworks through chain
box, and the third is to run one 800KVA/400V economic generator
through universal shaft.
▋Modular design is used. Three G12CV 190PZL-3 diesel engines,
reducer casing, and skid are taken as a transportation unit. Narrow
V-belt compound transmission unit and skid are considered as a
transportation unit. The dimensions meet railroad/highway
requirements.
▋The cantilever beam leg mast is installed at ground level and
integrally raised/lowered
▋The drill floor is 7.5m/9m in height, installed at ground level, and
raised/lowered together with the mast.
▋The drill floor is flat and spacious. On it there are the rotary table,
the rotary table drive, the hydraulic cathead, the hydraulic tongs, and
two 50kN air winches.

Introduction to ZJ50/3150LDB Drilling Rig
▋ZJ50/3150LDB rig is of mechan-electric driven one. The drawworks and the
mud pump are mechanically driven and the rotary table independently by AC
variable frequency motor
▋Power of the rig comes from three diesel engines (electronic), which drive
each working group after compounding through the coupler, reducer casing,
and integral chain box. Two universal shafts separately drive two
1300HP/1600HP mud pumps and chain directly drives the drawworks.
Universal shaft drives an 800KVA/400V economic generator.
▋The cantilever beam leg mast is installed at ground level and integrally
raised/lowered
▋The drill floor is 7.5m/9m in height, installed at ground level, and
raised/lowered together with the mast.
▋The drill floor is flat and spacious. On it there are the rotary table, the rotary
table drive, the hydraulic cathead, the hydraulic tongs, and two 50kN air
winches.
▋This kind of rig overcomes the problems existed in electric driven rig:
expensive cost in manufacturing, restriction between the rotary table speed of
mechanical rig and the mud pump stroke, longer transmission route, etc. It is
simple in structure and flexible in arrangement. It is a kind of an economical
and practical rig.

Crown Blocks
▋The drilling line is reeved in parallel.
▋The crown frame is made of high strength steel shapes & plates. The
lug plate for top drive is provided. It is equipped with metal base plate,
handrail, and toeboard. A ladder has an opening.
▋A deviation fast-line sheave.
▋The sheave cluster is tilted to counteract traveling block’s torque. The
side plate assembly is faced with derrick man for ease of picking off &
suspending elevators.
▋The sheave grooves are intermediate frequency quenched so as to
improve surface hardness and extend service life of sheaves.
▋All sheaves have double-row conical roller bearings and each bearing
has individual lubricating channel.
▋The rope guard prevents the wire rope from running out of the sheave
grooves.

Design Features of Eddy Current Brakes
Design Features
DS water-cooled eddy current brakes are suitable for auxiliary
brake requirement of drawworks for rigs with depth range of
4000~9000m (4 1/2" drill pipe).
▋The rotor and the stator are made of high quality magnetic
materials and subjected to heat treatment. There is a gap
between rotor and magnetic pole so no wear occurs during
operation.
▋Coils are made of single polyimide wire wrapped with glass fibre
and are dip coating of vacuum pressure in twice. The insulation
level is Class F or H.
▋The cooling water is supplied by a circulating water pump to
ensure that the heat generated by the brake can be dissipated
even under maximum load.
▋Rotor shafts are supported on double-row radial spherical roller
bearings.
▋To connect with the drum shaft by means of involute spline tooth
clutch.

For P series mud pump, it is compact in structure and light in
weight. It occupies small area and has high efficiency. Various
pump units can be available as required.
P series mud pump ensures smooth operation of pump. It can
meet the customer special requirements in shallow and
medium-deep drilling operations.
Five models for P series mud pump are available. The input
power is from 800HP (597kW) to 2200HP (1640kW).
Durable fluid end has greatly improved the performance of triplex

▋The power end: The housing is of welded steel-plate
construction. It is stress-relieved after welding. The drive gears
are involute type gears which allow smooth operation, high
efficiency and long life. The crankshaft is a hollow one-piece
steel casting. The power end is splash-lubricated.-
▋The fluid end: The suction and the discharge flanges conform
to ASA and API specifications.
▋The piston rod is connected with an intermediate rod by means
of clamps to realize quick assembly & disassembly.

Design Features of Compound Transmission Unit
Design Features
▋There are three kinds of transmission modes:
●Diesel engine and gear reducer.
●Diesel engine and hydraulic torque converter.
●Diesel engine, coupler, and reducer casing.
▋The transmission groups are connected with each other by means of belts or chains. Two kinds of belts (common triangle belt and
narrow V-belt) are available. Narrow V-belt compound unit is integrally installed. The belt may not be dismantled when moving the
unit. Chain compound unit is integrally welded. The chain may not be dismantled when moving the unit.
▋The main bearings are double-row radial roller bearing with larger load-carrying abilities and self-adjusting characteristics. The idle
bearings are ball roller and cylindrical roller ones.
▋The air radial clutches are applied. There are two kinds of clutches (conventional and ventilating type) with great capability of torque
transmission for ease of installation and maintenance.

Design Features of Masts-Open Face Masts
Design Features
▋Open-face masts.
▋Raising mode: integral and bootstrap.
▋Masts are installed at ground level and divide into sections.
Sections are connected with each other by means of double pins to
ensure connections integrity.
▋Mast stems are of beam structure for easy of
assembly/disassembly and transportation.
▋Two hydraulic cylinders (Left & Right) are provided to be used as
snubber when raising masts and as primary push-pull force when
lowering masts.
▋Masts’ space and height meet the need of installing top drive.
▋Masts conform to API spec. 4F.

Design Features of Bootstrap Masts
Design Features
▋Masts are equipped with self-elevating raising device and
integrally raised & lowered in sections with power of drawworks
and hydraulic wireline winch. They are applicable for offshore
drilling platform or limited areas.
▋Masts consist of the bottom, middle, and top sections and are of
open face type. The bottom sections are seated on the drill floor
or the sub base of substructures.
▋Masts’ leg has alignment mechanism and jack.
▋Sections are connected with each other by means of pins for
easy quicker installation and handling.
▋Masts are installed and raised in the following sequences:
bottom---top & crown block---middle.
▋Masts’ space and height meet the need of installing top drive.
▋Masts conform to API spec. 4F.

Design Features of Substructures
Design Features
▋Four kinds of substructures: box-on-box, integrate and one step risen, two-step raising & swing-lift.
▋The box-on-box structure: The front platform is suitable for installing standard BOP and the rear platform for installing heavy main drawworks and transmission groups.
▋Integrate and one step risen: It is raised in place with the mast. The mast, the drill floor, and equipment on the drill floor are installed at ground level and raised/lowered with power of drawworks.
▋The two-step structure: The equipment on the drill floor can be installed at ground level. The mast is raised when the drill floor is in the lower position. Then the floor and entire mast are raised together. The drill floor is equipped with two hydraulic cylinders, which serve the function of snubbing while raising the floor and push-back while lowering the floor.
▋The swing-lift structure: The rope for the mast and the substructure is reeved only once. They are raised integrally with power of drawworks. The mast, the drill floor, and the equipment on the drill floor are all installed at ground level.
▋The substructures conform to API Spec 4F.
