OPEN DOOR LAKEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ)
“An Open Door to a Vital Faith”
Dear Lakewood, What a blessing to get to go on vacation last week! And now, as I look around the campus, it feels like I have been gone for a month! Please take time to walk around and see all of the updating and projects going on. Many of them are nearing comple-tion (please pray!). Hopefully, you will see, hear and sense the Lord's mighty hand mov-ing in our midst! I am really ready for our worship scheduling to be more or less "set", how about you? This Sunday, July 28, Lakewood will meet at its normal 10:30 am worship time and Renew will continue at 6 pm on Sunday evenings. That same schedule applies to Sunday, August the 4th. Then, beginning August 11, our worship times will all be on Sunday mornings. Lakewood will have traditional worship at 8:30am, followed by Re-new services at 9:45am and 11am. The Grand Opening for Renew is set for Sunday, Au-gust 18. Please pray for our campus to be filled with people searching to know Jesus better. We are Better Together! I am grateful for the opportunity to preach through Hebrews this summer. Our last message is this Sunday, July 28. In August, we will begin a topical look at the "great work of our lives" which is Worship. We probably all think of different things when we hear the word "worship." But we all think of something . . . or Someone. We were cre-ated in God's image to worship the One who called us into being. Our natural "state" is a state of worship. God is very particular and specific throughout Scripture that we re-serve worship for Him only, for Him alone. No other "gods." As you can tell, I am very passionate about worship!! Please continue to pray, give, worship and serve one another. I realize, at least as an outsider, the tremendous change that Lakewood is undergoing. Change is not easy for any person I know . . . thanks for your prayerful patience! God is at work . . . Pastor Wayne ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Renew Updates:
Work continues in the children's wing, Roland/Roush Fellowship Hall, sanctuary, library, and a few other places. Sunday evening worship continues July 28 and August 4, then all Renew/Lakewood worship will be on Sunday mornings beginning August 11. Grand Opening for Renew is August 18!

Members of our Lakewood Better Together Team, Phil Roach, Thad Barker, Russell Scott,
Linda Jensen, Gene Hall and I, met with members of our Steering Board and other church
leaders in a Leadership/Focus group on Thursday night, July 25. The Group read and dis-
cussed a proposed Unification Document prepared by the Better Together Teams of Lake-
wood and Renew. The Document consisted of fifteen questions which had been answered
by both churches working to find common ground for unification. After considerable dis-
cussion and a number of questions, it was the unanimous feeling of the Group that the
proposal for unification should be presented to the Steering Board and congregation for
approval.
The Steering Board, meeting immediately following the Leadership/Focus Group gathering,
unanimously approved presenting the Document to the congregation for approval.
There will be a called meeting of our Lakewood congregation on Sunday morning, Au-
gust 11, 2019 at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall immediately following our Lakewood
8:30 am traditional worship service. The only item of business will be consideration
of the proposal for the unification of Lakewood Christian Church and the Renew
Church – Waco.
On Monday, July 29 a letter will be mailed to members of the congregation with a
copy of the Unification Document and information about Renew Church. This will give
everyone time to sort through the issues, look at the process and prepare in other
ways for the congregational meeting. After looking at the Document, if you have
questions or concerns you would like to talk about prior to the meeting, please get in
touch with Phil, Thad, Russell or me.
Sounds, sights and new smells are part of our daily life at Lakewood right now. The refur-
bishing of our Educational wing continues. Painting and new flooring have been done. Oth-
er improvements are coming. The smell of new paint is coming from Fellowship Hall. New
flooring is scheduled to be laid in the near future. A large crane has spent most of the
week in the sanctuary as a new sound system is being installed. A new commercial coffee
maker is being added to our kitchen. All of these improvements are being funded by Re-
new Church. We have also added a new commercial double oven in the kitchen at Lake-
wood’s expense.
Cleaning crews from Renew Church have worked with our Child Development Center staff
cleaning the Center area of our facilities so that space can be shared by CDC and Renew
during the week and on Sundays. We are pleased with the commitment Renew Church has
made to our Child Development Center. Wayne, Amy Nicholson and Kathy Cerceo are cur-
rently meeting regularly with our CDC Group that oversees the Center.
It is with regret that we announce the resignation of Patti Beaty as an Elder. Patti has
served very faithfully and we will miss her participation in this role at Lakewood.

CWF CORNER The Silent Tea letters have been mailed. If you wish to contrib-ute to our fundraiser, please use the envelope enclosed and drop it in the offering plate or mail it to the church office. Thank you, ladies! Hope you are enjoying the summer!
Sympathy:
Bernd Hirsch, Aletha George's Step-Father, died on Saturday, July 13, 2019. Graveside service was held, Monday, July 15 at 10:00 at the Rodef Sholom Cem-etery. Gwendolyn Hirsch, Aletha's mother, died in April, 2016.
We received the following note from Theresa Davies, our
Pattillo, Brown and Hill accountant:
“Friends from Lakewood. I cannot thank you
enough for your generosity. You helped me and my
daughter in our time of crisis and I’m eternally
grateful. Thank you. Juliet and Theresa.”
Theresa’s home burned on May 28. She and Juliet have just
this past week moved from a motel into an apartment
while their home is being repaired. Lakewood and others
shared love gifts with Theresa.
