HELPING ALOCAL CHARITYThe Guernsey Motor Trades Association was delighted to present Andy Priaulx witha donation of £5,000 to the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation (PPBF) recently, not least for his connection to local motor sport. It seemed fi tting to present the cheque at Forest Road Garage which Andy’s Grandfather, Ernold, built (reputedly with his bare hands) in 1948; the current owner, Andy’s friend Dale Crowsley, was there to present it, together with Doyle Motors Finance Director and former Joint GMTA President, Andrew Sparks. Andrew’s only child, Oliver, benefi ted from the incubator and equipment supplied by the PPBF to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.Explains Andrew: “I was delighted that theGMTA supported my proposal of making a donation to a charity close to my heart. Myfamily are deeply indebted to Andy, Jo and their team for their tireless fund raising eff orts to support locally born premature babies by the provision of life saving equipment funded by charitable donations.“Our son Oliver (pictured right) was born on August 13th 2010, 7½ weeks prematurely, weighing just over 3½ pounds, and spent nearly two months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. With the help of the wonderful staff on Frossard Ward and equipment provided by the charity, Oliver, like hundreds ofothers, now enjoys a normal childhood thanks to the charity.” The Priaulx Premature Baby Foundationwas founded by triple World Touring Car Champion, Andy Priaulx and his wife Jo following the premature birth of their own

children, Seb (now 13) and Danniella (10). Their early arrival prompted the Guernsey couple to establish the charity, which last year celebrated its tenth anniversary.The PPBF has raised almost £250,000, providing vital support for the Bailiwick’s premature babies and their families.“It is only through the generosity and hard work of islanders that we can continueto help,” says Andy.The PPBF works closely with the Neonatal Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, and consultant paediatrician Dr Sandie Bohin said the support they received from the Foundation was revolutionising the care they were able to off er.“It helps us improve the standard of care that we provide. The Foundation has undoubtedly enabled us to do that,” shesays. Approximately 65 babies are admitted to the Neonatal Unit each year. Most recently purchased with funds from the PPBF was a SimNewB - a responsive and reactive doll, which is a unique learning tool – at a cost of £15,000.Equipment also provided by the PPBFincludes incubators, hot cots, baby boxesand breast pumps. Most recently, afl at in Southampton has been donated to the charity for use by local familieswho have a child at the UK hospital, which of course incurs ongoing costs.The Foundation also provides vital emotional and fi nancial support to families coping with the premature birth of their child; that support is extended to the families of children with serious or life-threatening conditions.

The progress of Toyota’s hybrid power technology has reached another landmark.

With cumulative global sales of Toyota hybrid vehicles reaching 6.072 million units at the end of December. Notably the latest million-milestone has been reached in the fastest time yet, just nine months after the figure moved past five million.As part of its focus on new technology, Toyota has just released the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept car, based on its current Toyota production model. In designing Yaris Hybrid-R, Toyota has created a supermini concept like no other. Based on a reworked three-door production model, Yaris Hybrid-R harnesses Toyota’s race-winning sports hybrid technology in a powertrain that develops more than 400bhp.In simple terms, the powertrain features a 1.6-litre petrol Global Race Engine and two powerful electric motors that give the car intelligent electric all-wheel drive. It also makes use of a supercapacitor to harvest and store energy, just like Toyota’s TS030 Hybrid Le Mans car.The engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder unit with direct injection, developed by Toyota Motorsport (TMG) according to international sporting regulations. This means it can potentially be used in a number of different racing categories. While the engine drives the front wheels, each rear wheel is powered by a 60bhp electric motor – the same as that used in the standard Yaris Hybrid.In combination, the elements in the hybrid powertrain produce maximum power of up to 414bhp (309kW). The two electric motors work as electric generators when the car is braking, and supplement the petrol engine’s performance under acceleration.Toyota recognises that its cleaner, efficient technologies can only truly make a positive impact if they are widely used, hence its on-going efforts to encourage the mass-market take-up of its hybrid vehicles.

Kia has upped the ante on the performance front with the

cee’d GT, as it attempts to put pressure on established

manufacturers like Honda, VW, Renault, Ford and Vauxhall.

The Performance

The Kia cee’d GT has a 201bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine

that’ll propel the car from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and it

delivers sportier handling by adjusting the suspension and

steering set-up.

The GT’s offensive is all part of a plan to make Kia a little

more desirable as a brand. The GT versions of the cee’d

put Kia in the same mould as Ford and Vauxhall that have

‘halo’ models which give more credibility. When Kia’s 7

year warranty and fantastic reliability record are taken

into account, the GT is a pretty attractive proposition. Kia

is no longer a maker of dull but reliable cars for buyers

on a budget!

The GT’s Style

What distinguishes the GT from the rest of the cee’d range

is the new front bumper design that includes a larger, more

aggressive looking lower grille with a red pinstripe at its

base and the new four-piece LED spot lamps with a glossy

black surround, the GT gets slightly wider skirts to make the

car look longer and lower. It also gets twin exhaust outlets

and 18-inch alloy wheels with distinctive red brake calipers.

Other details include fantastic figure hugging Recaro

upholstered sports seats, piano-black trim elements and

contrasting coloured stitching.

To round off the design the GT gets the ‘tiger-nose’ and GT

emblem, which is also repeated inside the car at the base of

the leather-trimmed steering wheel.

Prices start from £17,133. As well as the 7 year warranty

the equipment list includes mobile phone connectivity and

steering wheel-mounted controls.

How long have you worked in your present job? I started on 3rd February 2014.

How did you come to work for Forest Road Garage and where does your interest in cars come from? I have always had a keen interest in cars and have owned various makes and models. My interest with cars started at an early age, the minute I started to

learn to drive. I never thought I would end up selling them.

The chance to work for a locally owned business selling two top brands were the key factors for me to join Forest Road Garage.

Describe a typical day? A typical day for me starts with a cup of tea, checking my diary to make sure that I am organised, then I wait and see what the day brings!

What do you like about your job? This job is about people and customer care. I have always enjoyed dealing with clients, wherever I’ve

worked. I also like selling new cars, that offer such a wide range of versatility, and knowing we have a full range of demonstrators available at all times.

What do you do in your spare time? Most of my spare time is taken up by my house, garden and my love of cooking. If I’m lucky enough to get a free day, fishing is my other passion.

If you didn’t do this for a living what would you do? I would like to be a chef – working for a top London restaurant owned by top TV chef (I’m only joking). Running a small pub would have some appeal…..
