2. Draw examples of your onomatopoeia ideas and create one for each letter of the alphabet. Make sure to keep in mind the limitations of adobe illustrator. Be unique and creative.

3. Follow in class instructions for setting up your grid in Adobe Illustrator. You may do your work on separate documents or on the margins and drag each design onto the grid when you are finished.

4. Check your work for errors and make sure you have put in effort for each of your designs. You may choose to keep some simple and have others be more comlex. If you get stuck, ask for help or look for your answers on a google search.

5. Print your work for display and prepare for critique.

Grading:You will be given points based on effort, neatness, and creativity.

Pop Art

•Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the United States.

•Pop art employs aspects of mass culture such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects.

•Pop removes the material from its context and isolates the object, or combines it with other objects, for contemplation.

•Although the movement began in the late 1950s, Pop Art in America was heightened during the 1960s.

•Pop is short for popular.

•Some pop artists include Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenberg, and Andy Warhol.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) USA

Lichtenstein was famous for his ability to depict the american comic book as parody. He often worked in primary colors and included onomatopoeias.Rather than attempt to reproduce his subjects, his work tackled the way mass media portrays them. He made fun of the way men and women’s roles were exaggerated and often used pattern as well.

Claes Oldenburg (1929-) Sweden

Oldenburg was famous for his large sculptures of ordinary household objects. They were often placed in public spaces or gardens so viewers could interact with them. His artwork has been described as a wonderful blend between reality and fantasy. He took objects from the everyday world such as typewriters, lipstick, a flashlight; lifted them out of their usual context; and forced viewers to reassess their preconceptions about the objects.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) USA

Warhol was famous for taking celebrity icons or everyday products and using printmaking to reproduce colorful images of them. The color combinations varied and the idea of showing an image over and over was said to have a coloration to how the mass media was beginning to take hold and repeat products and people for advertising purposes.

A Brief History of Pop Art

Pop art started in the USA during the earlier period of the 1960's. But it was already making its presence in the late fifties. Pop art was basically an art movement which attempted to replace the abstract mode of artistic expression with messages that are easier to understand. The pioneers of this art movement were Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. The boom of this art movement mainly happened in New York City. The initiators of Pop art believed that abstract art were already outdated because people had become different. Its followers believed in the power of easy to recognize images of common items, pop art introduced new objects such as flags, maps and targets or stuffed animals and rubber tires on paintings. Irony, sarcasm, and mockery were the favorite aspects of this art movement. Pop art in many ways was a form of rebellion to the rules of traditional expressionism. According to pop art, confining ourselves to the old rules of the arts can make us stale as they fit only with the old era. Some of the known advocates of this new artistic movement were Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. They shocked the painting world with their works that courageously mocked pop culture symbols such as comic strips, advertisements, and media images. Pop art was not just trying to break the traditional rules of visual expression. It was in itself criticising abstract painting style. Because the public could easily relate to its features, pop art gained the appreciation and support of many art critic groups. But in spite of that traditional abstract expressionism continued to flourish as it is the respected root of classic art. As they say, nothing beats the original. As pop art maintained its mockery activities, it did not reduce the popularity of abstract expressionism.

As abstract expressionism prevailed, pop art also continued to make its presence felt. The rivalry between these two styles resulted in the establishment of two new schools of abstraction: minimalist art and color-field painting. Minimalist art reduced art to its bare elements in reaction to the flamboyance of abstract expressionism. Frequently criticized for being too unapproachable, minimalist art has also been celebrated for its unprecedented immediacy. It achieves this immediacy through abstract form, absence of decorative detail, and emphasis on geometry. On the other hand, color-field artists moved toward a more impersonal and thoughtful aesthetic. In their works they dealt with what they considered to be the fundamental formal elements of abstract painting. These elements are pure, unmodulated areas of color, flat and two-dimensional space, monumental scale, and the varying shape of the canvas itself.Pop art and abstract expressionism were in a rivalry in the American sixties. These two artistic styles struggled to get hold of the public's support. While abstract expressionism tried to keep its old tradition and rules, pop art considered its rival an elitist approach that influenced America's consumer society.
