Onomatopoeia and Rhyme

Definition:

Onomatopoeia (on-o-mat- o-PEA-a) is the imitation of natural sounds in

word form. These words help us form mental pictures about things, people, or places.

E.g. boom, buzz, crackle, gurgle, hiss, pop, sizzle, snap, swoosh, whir, zip

Types of onomatopoeia: direct onomatopoeia: the sound of the word

resembles the sound that it produces. examples- pop, hiss, whirr, splash, rustle, zoom, bang, shriek, thud, ding-dong, gargle, crunch .

associated onomatopoeia: the name of a thing, animal or object that resembles a sound associated with it .examples- cuckoo (and other birds), bubble, whip, scratch, splatter, cackle, cough, whisper .

exemplary onomatopoeia: the amount and character of the physical work used by a speaker when verbalizing a word that matches its meaning .examples- nimble, dart, slothful, sluggish, mumble .
