MEMBERSHIP-THE ♥ OF OUR SOCIETY Kathye Blackburn, 2nd Vice President and Membership Chairperson

As the year ends, I am so proud of the work each chapter has done towards our membership goals of Recruit, Retain, and Reinstate this biennium. This year we are focusing on reinstating at least one former member in each chapter. I have heard from several chapters who have already reinstated a member or two. Let me know when you reinstate a former member so I can get a total for the year. I know we can reinstate over 50 former members in Epsilon state this year. Is your chapter going to be part of this challenge? I hope so. Email me at [email protected].

Also, chapter presidents, don’t forget the Necrology Report which is due to me by February 1. Please send in a Form 6 –Death of a Member on any member who has passed since the last state convention. I must have the Form 6 for my report to International. The Form 6 should be sent to me as soon as you can get it to me after the death. Mail to me at Kathye Blackburn, 2506 Fieldwood Circle, Bossier City, LA 71111 or email me at the email address above.

Next, chapter presidents, please look over your membership roll and send me the names of any of your members who have been members for 55 years (1959) or more. We want to recognize them again this year at the State Convention. Send me their names and number of years they have been a member and whether or not they will be at the State Convention in March. I have only heard from four chapters. Just email with a list or let me know you don’t have anyone. We don’t want to forget anyone. Lastly, chapter presidents, if you sent me names of members who have 25 or 50 years in our society, please try to encourage them to come to the State Convention as they will be given a certificate and recognized. Wishing you a great year!

ACTIONS NEEDED - NO GRACE FOR MISSED DEADLINES! Sandra Pruitt, Recording Secretary

Remember to send all reports listed on the Key Chapter Form to the appropriate officer or committee chairman. These reports will be verified when sent, so make sure that you send them on time and to the right person. Key Chapter Forms are also due February 1, 2015. If you have any questions or need clarification, contact me at [email protected] or 337-788-2669.

Successful Chapters: “The Secret to Our Success” Martha Turner, Epsilon State President

Having a successful chapter takes work and requires all members working

together to make it happen. Our theme fits this idea so well… “Lights, Camera, Action: Together Creating Infinite Possibilities.”

• Lights: Shine the Light on Your Membership It is important to take the

time to honor, spotlight, and get to know your members. DKG is not a one

woman show—get your membership involved. Pick up the phone and “call

them…they will come.” Make a plan to recruit, retain, and reinstate members.

• Camera: Focus on Programs, Travel, and Leadership Development Programs need to meet the needs of the membership. Ask them for ideas. Road trips are always fun and with DKG also educational. Coming soon…two travel opportunities are available: State Convention in Lafayette and Southeast Regional Conference in Savannah, Georgia. Make plans for leadership development. Always be on the look-out for future leaders—every chapter is always in need for the next president.

• Action: Make a Difference Take action…plan activities and raise money for International Projects: Schools for Africa and S.E.E.—Support Early-Career Educators. By supporting both of these projects, chapters are meeting the needs of children, young teachers, and our Society’s purposes. Don’t forget about projects in your local communities by meeting the needs of those around you. “Making a Difference” with projects benefit others as well as your membership. As you can see, to have a successful chapter takes teamwork. Working as a team, there is nothing we can’t accomplish…“Together Creating Infinite Possibilities.”

2014 District Meeting Summaries

CENTRAL DISTRICT: Thirty-three Central District members attended the October 18, Central District meeting in Many. Psi chapter outdid themselves in the beautiful decorations and delicious breakfast items that greeted us upon our arrival to Life Church. Quite a few ladies left with beautiful pepper plants that were the centerpieces for the luncheon tables. Every sister in attendance left with a beautiful mini Infinity scarf handmade by Psi member, Mrs. Kathryn Vaughn. We were in the company of a number of divas and leading ladies as Epsilon State Officers and Committee representatives gave reports: Scarlet O'Hara, Mary Poppins, and Shelby from "Steel Magnolias." Martha Turner's storyboard was interesting...she was shot in the foot by a boyfriend on a deer hunt and punched in the face by a 5th grader when her father, the school principal, cancelled the Homecoming Parade. Psi chapter members presented two awe-inspiring sessions. They reviewed a number of award books; one in particular was "Raising Henry: A Memoir of Motherhood, Disability, and Discovery" by Dr. Rachel Adams. They also reviewed the steps a Girl Scout can go through to earn a Delta Kappa Gamma badge. Look for that session to either be a Fleur de Lis project or a session at Epsilon State Convention in March. Congratulations to Central District award winners: Amy Russell, Alpha Upsilon, received the Rosebud Award and Amanda Taylor, Alpha Beta, received the Rose-in-Bloom Award. We ended the meeting with an awesome lunch of tamales and King Ranch Chicken and great table fellowship. NORTHEAST DISTRICT: There were over 50 registrants and visitors at Chef Eric's for the Northeast District meeting hosted by Alpha Nu Chapter. Dr. Barbara Baethe, longtime friend of District Director, Kathy Vollmar, motivated everyone with a PowerPoint presentation on leadership. She also shared pointers for success personally, mentally, and spiritually. There definitely was a great deal of laughter. Throughout the meeting everyone shared their special recipe for success. Musical entertainment was provided by two very talented students from Woodlawn Elementary and students from West Ouachita High shared a scene from Out Town, Our Community. NORTHWEST DISTRICT: The Northwest District met at First Baptist Church, Shreveport on September 27, and was hosted by Alpha Sigma chapter. Each chapter in the district donated a children’s book with a math theme. The books were later carried to the David Raines clinic in Minden to be used in the waiting area. State officers and committee chairman presented excellent reports before the group was dismissed to attend two of three break-out sessions. One session was led by Grace Peterson, LSU Ag Center Community Master Gardner who explained the “Let’s Get Growing” program. A second session was led by Melody Pachankis, a master teacher from Vivian Elementary. She suggested several apps that can be used in the classroom. The third session was led by Noel Haacker, founder of the Renesting Project, Inc. in Bossier City. Mrs. Haacker is an interior designer who uses her talents to help those who are less fortunate. Before the delicious lunch the members were wonderfully by entertained by Rocky Maddox, a local musician, who accompanied himself on the piano while he sang. Rocky was very entertaining and touched the hearts of those attending. Awards were given after the luncheon along with an invitation to the 2015 district meeting which will be hosted by Beta Alpha. Northwest District members enjoyed a good meeting and fellowship with each other. Thank you Alpha Sigma for a job well done! SOUTHWEST DISTRICT: On Saturday, October 5th of this year a small group of women were committed to serving members of Delta Kappa Gamma by hosting the Southwest District meeting. Thanks also to the outstanding Chapter members who created a warm and inviting atmosphere with decorations, great food, and helping hands. If you were not able to attend here is a recap of events. The day began with warm welcome by Elizabeth who gave a welcome address to all members in attendance. All Chapter Presidents presented math books and we learned how these wonderful selections could be used in the classroom. This presentation was followed by State Officers Reports and State Committee Reports. Then a very innovative and interesting presentation was given by Valerie Crouch. She gave a wonderful talk on Whole Brain Teaching in the Classroom. We learned how to get everyone in the room involved in the learning process by not only listening but learning movements that require more brain activity which fosters mastery of skills. We then got a special treat. Two very brave and a little “crazy” ladies came for a visit. Yes, folks the Peanut Butter and Jelly Gals showed up and boy did they put on a show. I don’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. What an entertaining duo! We sang songs, played games, and even dressed up in costumes to add to their show. Thank you again, Sigma Chapter for a great Southwest District Meeting! SOUTHEAST DISTRICT: On Saturday, November 1, 2014 Gamma Gamma hosted the Southeast District Meeting in Zachary, Louisiana. There were sixty Epsilon state members present along with a few guests. After opening the meeting we heard from first the Mayor of Zachary, Mr. David Amrhein. After the roll call of chapters we heard from each state committee and our state officers. Next we listened to our guest speaker Mrs. Sara Horn, a wife, a mother, and founder of the Ministry for Military Wives, who spoke on Empowerment. Her speech conveyed to members the influence that empowerment has on others. In her speech she discussed her ABC’s of empowerment: be Authentic, be a Believer, and be a Cheerleader. After a delicious meal we finished the meeting with our awards. Alpha Mu Chapter won the chapter attendance award. Dr. Mindy-Crain Dorough won the Rosebud Award and Donna Kimball Lerma won the Rose-in-bloom award. Thank you Gamma Gamma for a wonderful empowering Southeast District Meeting.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE STANDING RULES OF EPSILON STATE

Proposal # 1 - Standing Rules Article I.C.5 [1] Which now reads: C. Chapter Officers’ Leadership Development Workshop

Louisiana’s Chapter Officers’ Leadership Workshop is held in the summer of even-numbered years. The State President and/or Leadership Development Chairman decide the date and the location.

5. District Directors If District Directors are required to attend the Chapter Officers’ Leadership Workshop, each District Director’s travel expenses will be paid from her District Director’s Office & Travel Account rather than the Chapter Officers’ Leadership Development Workshop Account. [2011]

[2] Be amended by striking out and/or inserting new words or phraseology as follows: C.

[3] Which, if adopted would read: (underline the changes): C. Chapter Officers’ Leadership Development Workshop

Louisiana’s Chapter Officers’ Leadership Workshop is held in the summer of even-numbered years. The State President and/or Leadership Development Chairman decide the date and the location.

5. District Directors If District Directors are required to attend the Chapter Officers’ Leadership Workshop, each District Director’s travel expenses will be paid from the Chapter Officers’ Leadership Development Workshop Account. [2015]

Rationale for change: District Director's Office and Travel Account is limited to $200; this amount must cover their expenses related to district travel and any funds remaining to cover their expenses related to the State Convention. At the Chapter Officers' Leadership Development Workshop, the district directors make their 1st connections with the officers of their chapters in their district. Fiscal Impact: Total miles for the 6 district directors to travel to the Alexandria area for the training is 778 miles. 778 miles @ $.36 a mile = $280.08 The district director from the New Orleans area will most likely need to spend the night before the workshop since she will have traveled over 200 miles; that will be approximately $50.00 for 1/2 of a hotel room. Money is available in Chapter Officer's Leadership Development Workshop to cover these expenses. Approximate Annual Cost: $330.08 Submitted by: Executive Committee __________________________________________________________________________________________ Proposal # 2 - Standing Rules V.E. [1] Which now reads: New [2] Be amended by striking out and/or inserting new words or phraseology as follows: E. Jubilee Roses Stipend [2015]

2. Funds for the presentation of stipends are made available through the generosity of members who purchase Jubilee Roses and through memorial donations to the fund.

3. Guidelines: a. Any active, Epsilon state non-classroom teacher current in her membership may apply for a

Jubilee Stipend.

World Fellowship/Global Awareness Committee Jennifer Coriell, World Fellowship/Global Awareness Committee Chairman

The World Fellowship/Global Awareness Committee wants to invite you to join in helping to aid deserving women and children in other countries to further their education. There are several ways you can do this:

• The committee is conducting a Donation Project. The item for the donation is a limited edition sterling silver bell pendent necklace on a long silver chain, from the Bell Collection. This bell was handcrafted for the women of DKG and was first sold at the 2014 International Convention. Only 250 were struck, so it is a rare treasure. The donation tickets can be found on the website so that you can duplicate them and sell/purchase them in advance. Many chapters get contributions at chapter meetings, so consider having them available at your meetings. Having tickets available early has worked well in the past and allowed those unable to attend convention the opportunity to make donations to World Fellowship. Tickets are $1 each or twelve for $10.

• The donation tickets can be available to people outside the Society. Consider selling them at your school, to your family, or to members of other organizations in which you are involved. You can find information about World Fellowship on the International Site if you would like to have this available when you share with people outside the Society how this money will be used.

• Consider initiating or continuing your own chapter project to raise additional funds for World Fellowship. Some suggestions are a silent auction or your own Donation Project (i.e.: item raffle, basket raffle, etc. – be sure to call it a “donation” and not a “raffle”).

• Reach out to a World Fellowship recipient. You can send encouraging notes and letters or provide items, etc. for this recipient.

If you do sell tickets in advance, please have one member to be responsible to collect the money and tickets and bring them to the State Convention or mail all the tickets and money before State Convention. Mail it all to Jennifer Coriell, World Fellowship Committee Chairman, 123 Kimberly Drive, Leesville, LA 71446 no later than March 1, 2015.

Another way you can help is by promoting the Schools for Africa Project. DKG has partnered with UNICEF in supporting Schools for Africa (SFA). The following is some information about this project:

• Adopted at the 2010 International Convention in Spokane, WA as the Society’s first official international project

• Founded in 2004 by UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Hamburg Society • Promotes UNICEF’s child-friendly schools program in 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Angola, Burkina

Faso, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe • Supported by DKG members, chapters, and state organizations through monetary contributions • U.S. members send directly to UNICEF using the contribution form for DKG provided by UNICEF.

Thank you in advance for “Taking Action” and helping deserving women around the world.

State Representative John Bel Edwards, third from left, is honored as the Delta Kappa Gamma Epsilon state 2014 Friend of Education. Presenting the award to Representative Edwards are, left to right, DKG members Marion Arrowsmith of Mandeville, Beth Dawson of Jackson, and Renee Siccone of Baton Rouge. Chapters are reminded that deadline for nominations for 2015 Friend of Education Award is January 15, 2015. SPOTLIGHTING STATE CONVENTION WORKSHOPS Judy Rongey, 1st Vice President

This year you the sisters of Epsilon State will have the pleasure of selecting from eight workshops at our state convention. These workshops will empower us professionally and personally.

Delta Kappa Gamma and Girl Scouts: Together Creating Infinite Possibilities by Yvonne Busby from Psi Chapter, Central District

DKG and Girls Scouts have teamed up to develop young women leaders. A sample curriculum has been developed around the seven DKG Purposes and a DKG/Girl Scout Patch has been designed. Learn how Psi Chapter is working to adapt the curriculum to a Girl Scout Troop this year.

Embrace the Enchantment: Build a Mini/Fairy Garden by Donna H. Benda from Iota Chapter, South District

Miniature/fairy gardening has been called a meeting of craft with gardening. Actually, it is a way by which plants—real or artificial—are combined with whimsy. In this workshop the presenter hopes to pique interest in pursuing the fun and procedures of building a garden in a container.

Dropout Prevent Strategies 9-12 by Dr. Buffy Fegenbush from Chi Chapter, Southwest District

Dropout prevention is one of the most critical issues facing secondary schools. Who are our dropouts? Why are they dropping out? What ongoing strategies can high schools implement – starting in the 9th grade to save our students? These questions and more will be addressed in this open forum.

Survival in the Classroom by Sherry Fulton from Psi Chapter, Central District

Did you know that 46% of teachers leave the profession within 5 years? The number 1 reason teachers leave the profession is lack of support. What can DKG members do to support teachers with surviving in the classroom? DKA members will offer real survival tips to teachers from their personal survival experiences.

Leadership Lessons from the Movies by Lori A. Myers, PhD, CFCS from Theta Chapter, Northeast District

Lights, Camera, Action – what can Hollywood teach us about leadership? This session will use inspiration from the movies to promote the development of leadership skills. The ideas and materials shared are applicable within your chapter, classroom, or personal life and can benefit anyone wanting to become a more effective leader.

The Story Game by Telitha Doke from Eta Chapter, Northeast District

A fun game, adaptable to any age group, which builds storytelling and language art skills. The Story Game can be used in the classroom or at home or on long road trips.

Pyrography: The Art of Burning Pictures by Dr. Virgie M. Dronet, Alpha Kappa Chapter, Southwest District

A wide assortment of wood burned items produced over a 25-year period will be displayed. The presenter will explain the terminology of pyrography, materials needed, preparation of wood, selection of pattern or design, types of points, creating various designs, shading, and the wood burning process.

Chip In! by Sarah Broussard and Kimberly Hebert from Alpha Omega, Southwest District

We want to present a variety of tasty dip recipes for your enjoyment! All Delta Kappa Gamma sisters love a party; we had a great time with the Fun Finger Foods workshop last year. We want to feature some of our favorite dips and spreads. We will provide recipes!
