From the Directors Box

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Cuthbury to our visitors from Chesham United F.C.

We extend our hospitality to the visiting officials. players, staff and supporters and hope that you enjoy your time with us and have a safe journey home.

We are once again allowed spectators into the ground but with stricter rules and guidelines in place than at the last home game.

We must implement track and trace for every member of the public who enters the ground and the Clubhouse.

Masks must be worn when entering the ground and whenever you are moving around inside the ground. Masks also must be worn inside the Clubhouse and only be removed once sat down.

Please help us to keep a safe environment at the club so that everybody can enjoy their day here and we can all carry on enjoying watching football. On the football front we have had two positive results in the F.A. Cup and hope that we can carry on with a good cup run.

Not such a great result for us at Tiverton where we suffered a 5-0 defeat. The boys played some good end to end football but unfortunately it just did not go our way.

Today’s game is our first home game in the league and hope that after Tuesday’s Cup win it will have given the players a boost and with the support and backing of our great supporters it will spur them on to gain some points on the table.

We hope that you enjoy today’s game. Stay safe, Stay well.

"Club Legend" James Stokoe's tenureas Manager of the Magpies got off to aflying start in our last season of playingat Cuthbury. Skipper Scott Arnoldscored from a corner in the first halfbefore Curtis Young and substituteAidan Shepherd's goals book-endedthe second period. With only Curtis Young remaining fromthe starting line-up of our lastcompetitive game (at Dorchester inMarch), supporters were busyidentifying the returning and new facesas Wimborne made a bright start. In thefourth minute, Billy Maybury won theball for Luke Holmes to send JackLovell through to win a second cornerof the game. Young combined with DanStrugnell whose cross was well caughtby visiting keeper Brad Snelling (moreof him later). Then Charlie Gunsonpicked up a loose ball 25 yards out andsent a cracking shot inches wide of thepost. Home keeper Billy Terrell's longclearances were causing problems forthe Portchester defence. On 12 minutes, Wimborne took the leadfrom another Gunson corner. Arnoldmet it with a half-volley which bouncedinto the roof of the net - that was his38th goal in 554 appearances! Almostimmediately Portchester went down theother end and had, perhaps, their bestchance of the game. A pull-back fromthe by-line was somehow kept out amida scramble in the goal area.Wimborne created more really goodchances in the first half. Lovell playedHolmes through only for Snelling tomake an excellent save with his legs;Jake Sinclair picked up the loose ballbut his low cross-shot went wide.Sinclair played Lovell through only for

Snelling to deny the striker. And on 41minutes Strugnell's powerful headerfrom Gunson's corner whistled past theupright. At the other end Lee Wortheaded over when well-placed; Terrellsaved Toby Adekunle's shot; andCallum Chugg made a series of blocks. The second half started with end-to-endaction. Portchester's 46th minute free-kick was headed clear by Arnold. LukeHolmes then sent Young away on theright. At the end of a 40-yard run thewinger fired the ball past Snelling todouble Wimborne's advantage. As the home side took control of thegame, they crafted another 10 attemptson goal. Sinclair and Lovell combined tosend Gunson racing through, only forthat man Snelling to make anothercrucial save; Chugg headed Young'scorner wide; Lovell's curler flashedinches wide of the post; Sinclair playedLovell through for another 1 on 1 withSnelling - same result! Louis Kellaway, quietly doing his job in midfield, foundHolmes who sent Gunson through onthe right only for his drive to find theside-netting; then Shepherd was sentthrough on the left but his toe-poke beatboth keeper and the far post.Eventually, a third goal did come - intime added-on. Young sent Shepherdthrough, and this time, with theCuthbury faithful willing him on, theyoung striker scored from an acuteangle. And what joy to see the strikerrace to the touchline to embraceassistant manager Mark Gamble. The star performer for the visitors was,as you've probably worked out, BradSnelling, the young keeper. As well assaving with his legs, he used them togreat effect as a sweeper / keeper.

“THE MAGPIES”Wimborne Town Football Club was formed in 1878 and originally catered for both football and rugby. In 1884 the South Hampshire and Dorset Football Association was formed with Wimborne as one of the founder members. Three years later the Club became a found-er member of the Dorset County Football Association.

The Club’s first success came in 1913 when they won the Dorset Minor Cup for the only time. A year later they were runners-up in the Dorset Junior Challenge Cup.

The Thirties were a triumphant period in Wimborne Town’s his-tory as they carried off the Dorset League Division Two title three times and finished runners-up on a further occasion. The Magpies were also runners-up in Dorset League Division One in 1939. This period also proved successful for Wimborne in cup competitions. The Dorset Junior Challenge Cup was won twice in three final appearanc-es and the Magpies enjoyed four Dorset Junior Amateur Cup victo-ries in five seasons between 1935 and 1939.

Wimborne’s first senior hon-our came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup but this turned out to be the last honour for some while and it was not until 1964 that this success was repeated. After another lean spell, this time 17 years, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division One championship without losing a match. The Re-serve team retained the champion-ship the following season.

In 1981, following the installation of floodlights and the construc-tion of a perimeter wall and new changing rooms at their Cuth-bury ground, Wimborne were ad-mitted to the First Division of the Western League. They immediately established themselves among the leading clubs, just losing out on third spot to local rivals Swanage on goal difference. The 1984/85 season saw Wimborne Town’s most successful in the West-ern League when they finished in third place, this time ahead of Swanage on goal difference.

Wimborne Town joined the Wessex League in 1987 and stayed for he next 23 seasons, finishing outside the top eight only once. During that time the Magpies won the title on three occasions,

Wimborne Town FC - History in 1991/92, 1993/4 and 1999/2000 and twice finished runners-up, in 1992/93 and 1996/97. Wimborne won the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to become the first club to achieve the League and Cup double and this feat was repeat-ed in 1999/2000 & 2007/08. They were also runners-up in 1990/91 and 1995/96.

In recent years, Wimborne Town have appeared in 12 County Cup Finals. The Dorset Senior Challenge Cup Final has been contested eight times with victories in 1991/92 and 1996/97. Wimborne have also reached the Dorset League Cup Final on four occasions. The Magpies entered FA competi-tions for the first time in many years in 1982/83 when wins over Bridport, Falmouth Town, St Blazey, Bath City and Merthyr Tydfil earned them a visit to Aldershot, then a Football League side, in the First Round Proper. That’s where the Wemb-ley dream ended, however, with a gallant 4-0 exit. Before 1992, Wimborne Town’s best performances in the FA Vase had brought them Third Round appearances on three occasions. However, that record was eclipsed in 1992, when the Club, led by Chairman Brian Maidment & manager Alex Pike, enjoyed an epic run to the Wembley final where they defeated favourites Guiseley 5-3 to lift the trophy. In so doing,

Wimborne Town became the first ever Dorset club at any level to contest a Wembley final. During that same historic season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete a unique treble of trophies.

Season 2009/10 saw the Club, managed by Alex Browne, gain promotion to the Southern League, the highest position in the non-league pyramid that Wimborne Town has occupied in its history.

Steve Cuss was appointed manager in June 2011 and he led the Magpies to 12th spot in the table in season 2012/13. After four years of service, during which time Steve established the Club in the Southern League and led them to the First Round Proper of the FA Trophy in 2014/15, he resigned in November 2015, club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before replacement Simon Browne the brother of previous manager Alex took over full time. Unfortunately, Simon’s financial expectations for the 2016-17 season could not be met, the playing budget being slashed and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided and he re-signed in May 2016.

Meanwhile, Chairman Ken Stewart

stepped down in January 2016 and was replaced by Paula Henley. Paula put together an experienced and professional Board of Directors and lead the club towards a bright future.

In July 2016, ex professional and former AFC Bournemouth Pre-Academy Lead Coach, Matty Holmes joined Wimborne Town as 1st Team Manager. Matty brought his brother Danny with him. Together, they work hard on introducing a new brand of football, which has proved both pleasing to the eye and effective. Matty assembled a strong but young squad which achieved our then highest position in the Southern League of 11th.The team improved on that in 2017-18, finishing 3rd on 77 points, having scored over 100 goals, and winning the Dorset Senior Cup for the first time in 21 years. The euphoria was muted by a play-off final defeat by Swindon Supermarine in a penalty shoot-out. However, the restructuring of leagues at Steps 3 and 4, and the demise of Shaw Lane FC led to a late promotion for Wimborne as the highest performing team not already promoted.

In 2018/19 The Magpies played at Step 3 for the first time in their history in the Southern League Premier South. After an initial struggle, they held their own in the bottom half of the table. And on a dramatic last day of the season, when seven teams were in danger of falling into the third relegation spot, Wimborne ended up in 14th place, albeit with just three points to spare. In September 2019 Matty Holmes stepped down as Wimborne Team Manager to concentrate on building and setting up the new Wimborne Town FC Elite Academy, something that Matty had been building up since his time with Wimborne Town FC.Matty’s brother Danny stepped up from Assistant Manager to become Manager with James Stokoe taking on the role as Assistant/Player Man-ager. When the 2019/20 season was abandoned in March, Wimborne were lying in 15th place. As thoughts turned to the next season, and with club budgets under serious scrutiny, Danny Holmes resigned as Manager. The Board wast-ed no time in appointing club legend James Stokoe as Manager, and he brought in another former player, Mark Gamble, as his Assistant. But with only five players remaining from the previous season, and on a vast-ly reduced budget, the new management duo set about rebuilding the team. With the move to the new stadium just months away, there is renewed optimism at the Club at the start of the 2020/21 season.

Chesham United - HistoryChesham United Football Club was formed in 1917 following the merger of Chesham Town FC (who were founder members of the Southern League in 1894 when still known as just Chesham FC) and Chesham Generals (who took their name from the General Baptist Church in Chesham Broadway).

Relative success in the following years paled into insignificance following the FA Amateur Cup run of 1967/68 when, against all the odds, little Chesham United went all the way from the Preliminary round to the final of the FA Amateur Cup, finally losing 1-0 to Leytonstone in front of a 54,000 Wembley crowd. At a time when the population of the town was just 18,000 people, the club sold 22,000 tickets for this game.

The club went into turmoil on May 3rd 1983 when the main stand burned down. A new stand was officially opened with the visit of a Watford side, managed by the late Graham Taylor, containing future Chesham United manager Luther Blissett in 1984.

The 1987/88 season marked the centenary of non-league football in the town of Chesham, an achievement commemorated with a match against a full-strength Arsenal side on 18th August 1987.In 1991 the club won the Isthmian League Division One title and also reached the final of the inaugural Loctite Cup but lost to Bishops Stortford on penalties. In October 1992 the club went to the very top of the Isthmian League after a famous win at Enfield and stayed ahead of the pack until the end of the season, being crowned Champions on the last day after a 4-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet.

That season the average gate was just short of 1,000. The season also saw the arrival of ex-Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson. However the season ended in disappointment when promotion to the Conference National was denied because the club could not afford the necessary ground improvements. Since those days the club has been through many managers, including ex-England internationals Graham Roberts and Luther Blissett and literally hundreds of players, including a stint with Bruce Grobbelaar between the sticks. In the early 2000s the club again had an eye on promotion to the Conference as Bob Dowie led a strong Chesham side to 6th in the Ryman Premier, possibly an under-achievement when considering the resources at his disposal.

The team that year included Wayne Andrews and Fitz Hall, both of whom went on to enjoy professional careers in the higher echelons of football. Two years later and the club were once again relegated back to Division One.

With re-structuring on the horizon, the 2003/04 season was all about finishing in the top six. After an indifferent start the team climbed up the table to eventually take 4th spot in the Ryman Division One (North) and earn a place in the Southern League Premier Division.United’s first year in the Southern League was certainly adventurous. At times they looked title contenders, then flirted with relegation and in the end were happy to finish in mid-table.

The following year the true price of years of over-achieving came to light. Nearly two decades of wealthy chairmen helping to fund the club was over and it was time for the Generals to stand on their own feet, a task that proved too much.

By February 2006 the club was truly on its knees. The front pages of local papers were highlighting the sorry plight of the club that had seen so much. A public meeting was called at the Town Hall to “Save Chesham United” – it was a last desperate throw of the dice.Fortunately the sorry tale had a happy ending. A local businessman, Charles Manchester, read the stories, visited the Meadow, showed an interest and helped get the club back on its feet.

His intention was always to hand over the club to its supporters and he gradually brought more members of the Chesham United Supporters’ Trust onto the main club board whilst other Trust members took on many of the day to day tasks of running the club.

Fittingly, after for years at the helm, he was able to stand down at the end of the 2009/10 season with promotion back to the Southern League Premier Division secured and the club back on a stable footing.

After good work by the Supporters’ Trust, the club’s financial position was improved following a takeover of the club by businessman Roger Payne in 2012. This takeover allowed Chesham to consistently challenge for promotion to Conference South in the following seasons.Following relegation to the Sothern League South & West Division in 2006, Chesham were transferred to the Midland Division after a single season. In 2007/08 United finished 6th and missed out on the play-offs on goal difference, but in 2009 finished 5th, but lost in the play-off semi-finals to two late goals at Nuneaton Town having led 1-0 for much of the game.

Page 13: ONLINE PROGRAMME · Web Design & Hosting: Atomic Websites – hello@atomicwebsites.co.uk Website Advertising: info@wimbornetownfc.co.uk ... 9 Bournemouth 4 1 1 2 7 10 -3 4 10 AFC

In 2009/10 a fourth-place finish was enough to reach the play-offs again. A 1-0 victory away at Burnham set up a final against Slough Town with a crowd of 1,115 witnessing a 4-0 victory at the Meadow to secure promotion.Consolidation in the Southern League Premier was the main aim for 2010/11, but Chesham United finished 6th in the league having been in the play-off race for much of the campaign. They achieved a 4th place finish in the 2011/12 season, losingin the play-off semi-finals to AFC Totton.

In the 2012/13 season Chesham reached the FA Trophy Second Round, whilst in the league were unbeaten in their last 17 games to finish 3rd, before losing to Hemel Hempstead Town in the play-offs.

Chesham were able to build on this in the 2013/14 season, pushing eventual champions Hemel Hempstead Town all the way in the title race, but eventually had to settle for a place in the play-offs.After beating Stourbridge 2-1 at the Meadow in the play-off semi-final, Chesham lost 3-1 to St Albans City in front of a crowd of 2,960, the largest seen at the Meadow for many years. However a number of players left the club in the following close season and a revamped squad finished in 11th position. The 2015/16 season saw history made as Chesham knocked a Football League team out of the FA Cup for the first time. They defeated Bristol Rovers 1-0 on their own ground in the First Round proper. This led to a trip to Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground in the Second Round, when two late goals gave the home team a flattering 4-0 win.

In 2016/17 Chesham again reached the FA Cup First Round proper, losing 2-1 to Peterborough United at London Road. This resulted in a fixture backlog which led to the club finishing 11th in the league for the third season running.

The 2017/18 season saw Jon Meakes take charge of the team after a decade as assistant to Andy Leese. A new-look squad took time to settle, but a strong run saw the team briefly threaten the play-off places before finishing a creditable eighth. However Meakes left the club in September 2018 after the club’s first eight games yielded just one point.

He was replaced by joint managers James Duncan and Michael Murray, who turned the team’s fortunes around to such an extent that the club finished in a comfortable tenth position in 2019. The club continued to progress and were second in the table when the league season was cancelled in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
