Rawdha Alajmani is an Emirati Graphic Design student born in Abu Dhabi in 1991. She has taken courses in arts and design that include drawing, painting, photography (both digital and manual), typography, and packaging design. Rawdha worked on the branding of the International Symposium on Electronic Art that will be held in Zayed University is 2014, as part of her Graphic Design course. She has several artworks exhibited in Zayed University, such as her 2011 drawing series of “Something Ugly made Beautiful”, her digital self portrait, and her 2012 painting series, “Toxic”, which demonstrates the process of the damage in the lungs caused by smoking. Rawdha won phase 1 of the Art For All competition for her painting series “Toxic” and it was exhib-ited in Khalifa Park where the public were invited to vote for their favorite artwork in October 2012.

My love for art is rooted in my art-loving family. I have grown seeing and loving art. I always found pleasure visiting art exhibitions with my family and thinking in my mind of reasons why the artists have created the artworks. Since then, not only so I find joy in drawing and designing, but I also find comfort and relaxation in the pro-cess, where it allows me to clear my mind, express my creative side, and just let all my ideas flow on the piece of paper.

Art is a universal visual language. It can communicate ideas, beliefs, stories, and even feelings. As a graphic designer I translate my ideas through my designs by exploring colors, typography, pattern and page layout to communicate a certain mood or mes-sage. Furthermore, being a person that enjoys volunteer work, I genuinely enjoy de-signing for a social cause. That includes sending awareness and pointing out problems and suggesting solutions all through design, because I think it is our responsibility as designers to use our talents to save the world.

Even though we can find inspiration literally everywhere around us, I think my biggest sources of inspiration are artists and designers who have a unique and clear goal in their careers, artists who have so much passion and dedication towards their work and what they do.

Just like most of the designers, I face challenges and difficulties everyday in my life, however I try my hardest to overcome them by believing that I have the capability of achieving great standards of design. Just like I seek inspiration from great artists like Stefan Sagmeister and Bruce Mau, I aim to inspire people to love designing and art, whether it was by artwork of just the person I am.

ISEA Branding

The goal of this project was to develop the branding for a conference that is going to take place in Dubai in 2014 called the International Symposium in Electronic Art (ISEA). It is the world’s most important media arts event for the interdisciplinary discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in interactive and digital media. This event annually brings together artists, academics, scientists, and new media practitioners. The main theme for the 2014 symposium is Locations. So keeping that in mind I was able to brainstorm, sketch, and design a logo for the symposium.

I used the theme of the conference, “Locations”, and the subtheme, “Nomadic Shifts”, for inspiration for the conference branding. The curved line in the logo represents Dubai’s landscape, where we can see sea and beaches, and sand dunes and mountains. So, I used the idea of the sea and sand for all the pieces I design for this brand. I also introduced vector based images of waves and sand dunes in the pieces.

From the very zero that makes possible the binary data that the information age is built upon to the recursive geometries of Arabesque patterns, the long history of mathematical, scientific, and artistic contributions from the Arab world is well known. Dubai has been the emerging economy to watch over the past 15 years. In what way has this influenced the work of artists?

INTERLACING WORLDS: FIBRES & SENSORY MEDIATION

Trading states along the Silk Road, by their nature as wealthy cross-cultural meeting points, played a catalytic role in advancing the evolution of luxury or exotic goods. In Nomadic societies, fabrics—whether for clothing or housing—were developed from products in their surrounding environments. Today, technology has advanced to allow fibers and fabrics to engage upon our senses through optics and feedback response. This theme explores the rich history of, and the future possibilities for the influence of textile and related media by digital technology.

Social networks have played a pivotal role in the success of the Arab Spring. The Internet and other digital media are indispensable in the effort to illuminate and advance the public discourse on complex social themes and political systems (take for example Ahmed Basiony’s “30 Days of Running in the Place” documenting his demonstration of running alongside his footage of the Egyptian revolution prior to his murder). This theme aims to provide a forum for the exploration of the future of social media in art and its potential influence on the evolution of social ecologies.

The rich history and cultural identity of the Emirati people is closely tied to nomadic lifestyle. Microclimate, geography, and biology of the region are the generative cause of the nomadic life of the Bedouin. Today, the idea of the nomad has taken on a multitude of diverse connotations with new generative causes. How do these new notions of nomadic existence effect the practice of media art?

DIGITAL ARCHAEOLOGY & COLLABORATIVE SPACESOn 21 November, 2014World Trade Center, Dubai

Digital tools and applications are being used to recreate lost communities and to better understand spatial and cultural histories. In architecture and planning, virtual worlds create the opportunity to push the boundaries of materials and concepts (chaos, uncertainty, responsive environments)—that may or may not be realized. How does this practice impact the evolution of social systems? How has this practice influenced education and collaborations across disciplines?

Welcome to the 20th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2014) staged

for the first time in the Middle East. ISEA, the International Symposium of Electronic Art, is the world’s most important new media arts event for the interdisciplinary discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in interactive and digital media. The overarching theme of ISEA2014 of ‘Location’ will explore strands such as Technology; Science & Art East Meets West; Emerging Economies/Emerging Identities; Nomadic Shifts and Digital Archaeology and Collaborative Spaces.

Dubai is a location with exquisite contradictions. Its location not only provides a place with world renowned architecture, but also boasts its development along the waters, its original trading ground. For presenters and attendees of ISEA, it will be an experience like no other. Dubai is in a location, where everything around it is going through massive change—socially and politically.

Dubai offers a platform for its neighbours to come and share not only their research, but to have access to the plethora of ideas that ISEA brings with its symposium. Holding ISEA2014 in Dubai offers participants from the broad scope of the Middle East and South Asia an accessible opportunity to participate in ISEA events. It is highly likely that this particular audience would not otherwise have this possibility to engage with this group of international practitioners and thinkers of electronic art. Likewise ISEA participants from beyond the MENASA region will have the opportunity to engage with an audience outside of their usual practice.

Our program has a unique focus on the burgeoning field of art and technology in the Arab World and will provide unique opportunity for ISEA to connect audiences and artists from the Middle East with the international electronic art community. Teamed with Zayed University we are committed to ensuring that young Arab generations have a presence and voice on the global stage.

This market runs along the creek opposite the Deira Souk. Souvenirs and knick-knacks are on sale but the

area is best know for its stunning array of fabrics from the Indian subcontinent and the Far East.

Visitors and tourists can find everything that comes to one's mind in this market, this traditional market combines various types of goods, including food, games, fabrics, Abayas, children wear, bags,

shoes, perfumes, and many other things that meets the needs of the consumers

who are looking for cheap prices.

One of Dubai's best kept secrets. Satwa Souk is essentially a shopping square

but should not be overlooked for those in search of tailor-made clothes or

high quality fabrics.

Dubai's largest and oldest souk. A wonderfully different experience,the spice souk has narrow streets and an aroma so unique,it's like walking into

another era. Although spices are available, a Far eastern influence seems to be setting

in, with integrated shops of cheep electronic goods and wholesale shoes.

The largest and busiest of Dubai’s fish markets is well worth a visit if only to see the incredible array of

local fish on offer. Blue lobster from Fujairah, baby sharks and metre long kingfish are just some of the treats in

store for the shopper that doesn’t mind getting their shoes dirty.

The gold souk is a truely dazzling sight to behold. It has earned Dubai a reputation for being the 'City of Gold'.

The market offers earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants, and

you can choose from modern to traditional items.

We were asked to create a full bilingual typeface, and associate is with one of the type classifications given to us. After lots of thinking about what the typeface I will create could look like, I finally decided to make it a handwritten typeface.People always told my I have a very legible, clear, and neat handwriting. So, I always imagined it being a full functioning typeface for people to use. I finally got the opportunity to make it happen. Even though the typeface will look like my font, I still made some changes and adjusted the thicknesses, sizes…etc. Handwritten typefaces usually look very scribbly and scratchy, however, I mine is more settled, clean, and not very scribbly. It is quite curvy (but not too curvy), sans serif, and casual.I imagine my typeface to be used in fun and more informal occasions. It will probably be used by the younger generations. One special aspect about handwritten typefaces is that they almost always look very friendly. So, I don’t think it will be used in a poster for a horror movie.Even though we don’t usually pay attention to the characteristics of our handwritings, it is very important to think about them when transforming them into a font. All letters should have same proportions, thicknesses, and overall feeling.

We were asked to develop a series of posters to visually express our opinions and persepective of both Dubai and San Francisco. We had to consider the relationship between the two posters, and find a common thread to unify them together either stylistically or conceptually. I chose two tag-lines that are used for each of the cities and illustated their skylines.

For this project, each student was gven a topic where they had to come up with an event related to it, and then create posters and remix them using the help of our partners in San Francisco. The poster on the left is the poster my partner created, and that I remixed by fixing the layout and add-ing color. The poster on the right is the one I created and my partner helped my remix it.

For this project, we were asked to design a promotional package that would also act like an invitation for The First International Date Palm Festival. This package will hold a bottle of date honey that will be a giveaway with the invites. Our main aim for this project was to create an engaging package that would not only attract local but also international crowds. The package must be clear, attractive, and unique.Before actually designing the package, we were supposed to come up with a brand story for our product, then do some quick sketches and refine them.

Our date honey is made using traditionalmethods. After thorough and gentle cleaning, the fresh soft dates are placed in a compressor where they are pressed in high heat until the vitaminrich honey starts dripping. The quality of the honey extracted very high, and it has excellent color and flavor.

For this project, we were assigned in groups of four, where each group had to choose a theme that has 4 different components. Each student had to produce a full suit using on of those components. This project helped us understand that design can be used in objects such as simple games in order to express and showcase are indi-vidual styles and ideas.

As a group, out theme was different eras in the 20th century. Because the 20th century had extremely different styles and movement, each member in our group chose a decade (20s, 50s, 60s, 80s) to design her suit. I chose the 1960s because I believe it had very great events that will always be remembered in history. So, for my cards, I decided to show different major and sig-nificant events in that decade. I did that because I thought it would be really interesting if my cards can be used both as playing cards, and historical and educational cards.
