RésuméL’urbanisation accélérée de la Chine et son accession au marché économique mondial amènent un type de diffusion de modèles en aménagement qui diffère tant au niveau des processus d’emprunt que des formes urbaines produites. La transplantation de villes européennes dans la périphérie de Shanghai au début des années 2000, portée par un geste politique à la grandeur de la nation, illustre ce phénomène. Alors que des référents urbains étrangers servent à la fois le besoin de créer des pôles de redéploiement pour désengorger la ville-centre et le désir d’afficher la nature internationale de la capitale économique du pays, la ville devient une commodité dépolitisée que l’on peut reproduire et adapter au marché local. La transplantation d’une ville anglaise dans la périphérie de Shanghai voit s’affronter deux cultures urbaines aux principes d’aménagement souvent opposables : l’une est basée sur une structure arborescente où l’élément est relié au tout et focalise sur l’espace public; l’autre privilégie la relation binaire par la juxtaposition d’espaces contenus favorisant une organisation socio-spatiale communautaire. Cette confrontation permet de remettre en cause l’échelle de l’unité morphologique de la ville, là où « transparaissent les valeurs fondamentales de l’organisation de la vie quotidienne d’une société » et traduite par les notions vagues d’ilot, de secteur, ou de quartier. Elle permet aussi de revoir l’hégémonie des paradigmes urbains occidentaux lorsqu’ils se confrontent à un héritage culturel local qui porterait avant l’heure des principes en accord avec la réalité de la ville postmoderne : un territoire libre en constante mutation dont les limites transgressent son espace géographique.

AbstractChina’s entry in the world economic market and the accelerated urbanization that ensued created a type of model’s diffusion in urban planning which differ both at the level of the processes of loan and produced urban forms. The transplantation of European cities in the outskirts of Shanghai in the early 2000s, carried by a political action at national level best illustrates this phenomenon. While foreign urban referents serve the need to create poles of redeployment to ease congestion in the city center as well as the desire to expose the international nature of the economic capital of the country, the city becomes a depoliticized commodity which can be reproduced and adapted to the local market. The transplantation of an English village in the periphery of Shanghai sees the confrontation of two often opposable urban cultures: one is based on a hierarchical structure where the elements are connected to the whole and focuses on the public place; the other favors a binary relationship by the juxtaposition of contained spaces favoring a community based socio-spatial organization. This confrontation leads to question the scale of the morphological unit of the city, where the fundamental values of a society’s everyday life take place, which is translated by the vague notions of block, sector, or district. The analysis allows us to revamp the hegemony of Western urban paradigms when confronted with a local heritage which carries principles in agreement with the reality of the postmodern city: a free territory in constant transformation where the limits overcome its geographical surface area.

titled: “the diffusion of western urban forms in contemporary China: a morphological approach”, the research was conducted during two years as part of a master’s degree in urban studies. It combined themes of urban morphology and international diffusion and how it applies to understanding and resolving the problems brought up by the emerging urban territories of globalization.

Intitulée “La diffusion des formes urbaines Occidentales en Chine contemporaine: une approche morphologique”, la recherche a été conduite pendant deux ans dans le cadre d’une maîtrise en études urbaines. Elle combine les thèmes de la morphologie urbaine et de la diffusion internationale alors qu’ils s’appliquent à la compréhension des problèmes soulevés par les nouveaux territoires urbains de la mondialisation.

In Chinese urban design as in the literary expression, the relation between elements does not follow a hierarchical system, but a binary one. The Chinese city is made by the juxtaposition of introverted modules rather than by the sequence of open spaces and built forms bound to a center. This organisation is free from the limits brought by the dependency to the whole, where the introduction of a foreign elements risk to destroy the cohesion by creating discontinuity.

The observation of the new city of Songjiang highlights the importance of the portal as a significant element of the urban landscape. The architectural style of the façades are not indicative of the function of the building nor the identity of the place. These tasks fall to the access point and the closure element that associate to a particular block. They are located at the junction of two scales, the city and the urban, and reveal the identity and function of the place. Their absence makes the city unreadable for the resident.

HIGH-DENSITY RESIDENTIALthis Competition for the rehabilitation of an old industrial site of 9.6 ha near the Lachine Canal in Montreal was done among a team of architects with a great expertise in large scale residential complex and sustainable design. the intense work lasted four months, during which I have completed the design and planning of one 8 story, 180 units building, as well as helping develop the master plan and the two condominium towers located at the main quadrant of the site. the sketches were created using sketchUp and Photoshop, and the other drawings with autoCad and illustrator. the main design feature is the reproduction of the four original industrial basins connected to the canal, onto which the buildings are placed. the water body structure is revealed near the road, as we see the ramp leading to the underground parking lot.

Ce concours pour la revalorisation d’un vieux site industriel de 9.6 ha près du Canal Lachine à Montréal a été mené parmi une équipe d’architectes experts en conception résidentielle haute-densité. Le travail intensif a duré quatre mois pendant lesquels j’ai complété la conception et l’aménagement d’un bâtiment de huit étages et 180 unités, et participé au développement de l’ilot au nord-est du site, comprenant deux tours de condominium. Les croquis ont été effectués avec les logiciels SketchUp et Photoshop et les plans avec AutoCad et Illustrator. Le caractère distinctif du projet est la reproduction des quatre bassins industriels originaux reliés au canal, sur lequel les bâtiments résidentiels sont implantés. La structure artificielle de la surface d’eau est révélée au niveau de la route alors qu’une rampe rejoint le stationnement souterrain.

The main challenge was to maximize density while keeping all the units comfortable. The towers: from three they were reduced to two, in order to provide best visibility and sunlight to all units. A balance between compacted and extended floor plan increase the area for windows while keeping the interior corridors to a minimum. The difficulties remain to build next to and onto a body of water, in a northern climate.

This is a proposal for a national competition for the construction of an interior soccer complex located in an old stone quarry in Montreal. the city asked for a concept that convey a strong image, related to site history and the context of Montreal’s cultural and climatic particularities. My role was to propose a concept and produced a program along with a presentation panel with a team of three architects. sortwares used were sketchUp, Vray, Photoshop; autoCaD and Illustrator.

La ville de Montréal a lancé un concours national, à la recherche d’un concept flexible et d’une image forte pour un nouveau centre de soccer intérieur. Le design devait rendre justice à la particularité historique du site, qui contient une ancienne carrière. La conception a dû prendre en considération les aspects de durabilité et de l’héritage culturel de la ville.

the municipality requested a serie of proposals regarding the revival of their obsolete recreational facilities. A proposition was selected and a complete design, together with presentation document, was submitted. The appearance of the existing building had to be preserved, as well as the exterior pool, which added to the complexity of the problem solving.

Études de propositions pour l’agrandissement et le réaménagement d’un complexe aquatique et sportif municipal. Les difficultés se situaient au niveau des restrictions infligées par la rigidité du site et des bâtiments existants, par le contrôle des coûts engendrés, et par le souci de préservation de l’esthétique et la réutilisation des matériaux pour minimiser les déchets tout en améliorant la fonctionnalité et en respectant les nouvelles normes de construction.

The difficulty to see the pools from outside the building, due to the height of the floor and the condensed nature of the site, is solved in two ways. First, at the front entrance, the main pool is exposed in the lobby, adding a visual axis perpendicular to the main circulation. Then, at the rear entrance, a detail in the construction of recreational helps lower the water level in order to meet the eyes, creating an effect of a waterfall from the outside and an infinite surface from the inside.

Difficile d’entrevoir les bassins de l’extérieur à cause de la hauteur du plancher et le caractère condensé. La solution fut d’exposer les bassins de deux manières, à l’entrée avant et arrière : le premier se révèle à l’avant, dans le hall d’entrée, ajoutant un axe visuel perpendiculaire à l’axe de circulation; le deuxième se trouve à l’arrière, ou un détail de construction du bassin récréatif permet de descendre le niveau de l’eau à hauteur d’yeux, créant un effet chute à l’extérieur et un effet surface continue à l’intérieur.

Proposals for the use of an obsolete parking lot in front of a commercial strip next to a highway. The client was looking for different ways to incorporate residential and office buildings while creating a vibrant neighbourhood in spite of the unusual location.

Propositions pour la meilleure utilisation d’un espace de stationnement face à un centre commercial en bordure d’une autoroute. Le client recherchait des façons créatives d’intégrer des bâtiments résidentiels et à bureaux tout en favorisant un voisinage vibrant en dépit de sa localisation inhabituelle.

MIXED-USE PROJECTDesign proposal for the rebirth of an obsolete parking lot of 4.3 hectares next to a highway in a multi-ethnic district in Montreal. The client searched for a new identity, a way to mix multi-family residential and commercial and to create a welcoming opening toward the park.

Proposition pour la réhabilitation d’un espace de stationnement de 4.3 hectares près d’une autoroute, localisé dans un quartier multiethnique. Le client recherchait une nouvelle identité, une façon de fusionner un espace résidentiel haute densité avec une zone commerciale et de créer une transition vers le parc existant. En charge de la conception et de la présentation au sein d’une équipe de quatre personnes. 6

TRADITIONAL MEDICINE CLINICNew construction for a three storey 2600 ft2 (240 m2) traditional medicine clinic. An open layout for a new construction to make the most of the small area and low budget available. The shape of the building combines rural aesthetic with modern simplicity, following the client’s demand. the elevator and lobby serve as a label for the small business, where the rigidity of the concrete wall is subdued by the exposed wood structure of the main staircase and vestibule.

Nouvelle construction pour une clinique de médecine traditionnelle de 3 étages et 2600 pi² (240 m2). Le plan centralisé pour une nouvelle construction tire profit des restrictions au niveau de la surface disponible et du budget. La forme du bâtiment combine l’esthétisme rural et la simplicité moderne, répondant aux demandes des clients. L’entrée donne le ton à l’établissement, où la rigidité de la paroi en béton est adoucie par la structure de bois exposée de l’escalier principal et du vestibule.

Projects conducted around Shanghai during the year 2008-2009 as part as a local chinese firm of consultants in large scale projects and new towns master planning.

• MoFan centre in Jiangyin: in charge of the design for a luxury shopping mall and office tower, using intelligent technology for the façade.

• Changzhou’s Commercial and Business District: to create a new image to renew the industrial past of this city and open it toward a green future in order to appeal to prospective developers. My work included the development of the central shopping park and the production of presentation documents.

• Jiangyin New Town: design ofthe northern segment of a new town containing the government buildings and a commercial zone along a river and a perpendicular axis.

New commercial center and office tower in a developing city near shanghai. the shopping center was divided into two parts, a conventional department store leading to boutiques and restaurants with terraces surrounding the tower. the concept consisted of rectilinear masses floating above the ground with a sinuous and transparent connection. As the lead designer on the project, I was in charge of the development of the exterior and interior space, the programming, presentation drawings, and the coordination with experts.

SCHOOL PROJECT

While at school I was attracted to the mystery of the early 20th century “Art Nouveau” style. I used it in a final year project to conceive a single family residence. After conducting a research, I came up with my own interpretation of the style and tried to bring it back to a modern world now deprived of the same joy and delicacy in its design. The sinuous curves have a form of their own. They represent the fluidity of the mind, the flow of thoughts, without any brutal restraint. Their intrinsic organic flow is not altered by human manipulations.

Pendant mes études universitaires j’ai été attirée par le mystère du style Art Nouveau, que j’ai utilisé pour la conception d’une résidence unifamiliale dans un projet de fin d’année. Après avoir entrepris une recherche, j’en suis venue à une réinterprétation du style pour le réintroduire dans un monde moderne dépourvu de la même joie et délicatesse dans ses réalisations architecturales. Les courbes sinueuses ont une direction qui leur est propre et manifeste la fluidité de l’esprit. Leur mouvement organique intrinsèque n’est pas arrêté par les manipulations imposées.
